Hello friends,

So Open world games are some of my least fav genre. so that its very very hard to find even a decent open world game be it third or first person regardless and most of best kind of open world came from semi sandbox design imo (like Deus Ex, Hitman, STALKER) rather than full blown open worlds. but here we discuss what are our top 3 open world games of all time shall we?

heres mine.

  1. Far Cry 2
  2. Just Cause 2
  3. Batman Arkham City

Far Cry 2 is imo absolute best full blown open world game to this date. it was so immerive, have excellent weather effects, a great shooting and AI but this formula didnot repeat it in sequels as a result sequels become cinematic and movie games.

Just cause 2 on other hand is best third person open world game. it destroy the likes of GTA, saints row, RDR and it other clones. as it put gameplay and fun as first class citizen unlike GTA.

Batman arkham city is sure inferior sequel to asylum but it was still great. first time we experienced Batman in open world and it works. It was excellent, and even Knights was best open world game of last gen a gen full of open worlds.

so friends these are 3 I beleive best open world games. what are yours? lets discuss

22-4. Just couldn't let things go, could you? Edit: I knew it. Just another excuse to whine about RDR2. Predictable.

In no particular order, Saints Row 4, Skyrim, Horizon Zero Dawn.

  2. Horizon: Zero Dawn
  3. Red Dead Redemption 2

Honorable mention: Metroid Prime, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Cyberpunk 2077, & Far Cry: New Dawn.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

2. Skyrim

3. Batman: Arkham Knight

Great choice probably the best open world game of all time maybe... Rockstar is one of the last devs that actually pushes the industry forward.

Liking Rockstar games is fine but moving and pushing industry???

Nice joke, If rockstar make standard. we would only have 20% of dull gameplay with 80% consist of doing nothing (also including cutscenes). Even Assassins creed done majority of things better than rockstar games.

1. Breath of the Wild

2. Witcher 3

3. AC Valhalla

Important to note that I did not play RDR2 yet and from what I'm hearing it might actually become part of my top 3 when I do come around to it.

only if you count cutsscenes, animations, the world. but for playing part its not.

GTA5 was trash and still is. terrible gameplay, linear and scripted when in mission that consist of driving from point A to point B and when in combat it just dull cover shooter. it doesnot even have good story to save a life unlike RDR2. yet its highest selling game of all time because its mainstream brand and even non gamers knows and play GTA5.

RDR2 despite haivng good story for rockstar standard (not great story in general), excellent world, Best graphics ever seen, incredible animations but what this and GTA5 have things in common. bad gameplay. I would say RDR2 gameplay is even more slugging than GTA5. but it has much better story to save it life.

Rockstar still doesnot know how to design a mission and gameplay at all.

The only truly great game they made was Max payne 3 and it show they have talent that they wasted on yet another open world. Max payne 3 mechanics were near perfect but then they ditch max payne series and came back on boring open world formula.

So my friend, they were never driving force in industry.

I'm pretty much done with GTA series but the Red Dead games are so much better in every way imo. Rockstars are good but the fans overhype them is the problem. Not really looking forward to GTA6...but subject to change within me.

even some of my non gamers friends are hyping GTA6 and calling it once it will release you will forget every game. this is how rockstar create the hype. RDR1 was pretty good game for its time. and much better than RDR2 in every single way as I remember when i saw wild west open world game like this for first time it wow me.

I wanted rockstar to make Max payne 4 but they are not interested in exploring the ip.

STALKER is my number 1 and Mafia number 2 choice if they count. but unfortunately they are not full blown open world games. STALKER is semi sandbox non linear game divided into zones and Mafia is linear game with open driving mechanics.

otherwise Hitman series would also count as open world.

I thought about putting Arkham City, Bloodborne, and Spider-Man over GR2, but I like those games for their combat and story, while the worlds themselves weren't the main draw. In GR2, the most fun I had was flying all over the map to find hidden treasures and aid others in the online mode.

I can't speak for RDR2 since I didn't play it yet.

As for GTA5, do keep in mind that this is a game from 2 gens ago that was already recycling the type of gameplay found in GTA4. It's not top notch gameplay I agree but personal opinions still don't change the fact that Rockstar has been a driving force in the industry for better or worse. I personally still enjoyed GTA5 but obviously the gameplay and feel is a bit dated.

Max Payne 3 was nothing special IMO, if they ever revisit that series I vote for a reboot instead of a MP4.

I'm mostly curious at that point what the game (GTA6) will be like and a part of me is interested. I think whatever form it takes it's safe to say I'll probably end up playing it eventually.

@lebanese_boy: Please dont use driving & R* in the same sentence, GTA4 car handling is the worst i've ever encountered and i've played all but a dozen racing games in the last 2 gens.

Oh and R* doesn't drive the industry forward, maybe for microtransactions for their casino.

Which brings me to Just Cause 3. Not the best open world, but traversing it was fun.

1. Oblivion - Not really for the base game and it's contents but for all the mods that added some pretty top tier content into the game. The game definitely got a second life to me due to mods and I spent many many hours playing it.

2. Mafia 2 - I nearly put this at number one because I felt it captured the time period perfectly. Everything fit the part, The soundtrack was top notch and the story drove it home.

3. GTA San Andreas - I always enjoyed this one much more than 4 or 5. It wasn't just the depth of the story but the numerous cheat codes you could do that cranked the fun up to 11 for me.

@R4gn4r0k: Just cause 3 & 4 are criminally underrated, they are among the best open worlds because of the gadgets you can use to interact with that world. I see a lot of people are picking the usual suspects when most of them seem to be very generic picks.

BotW is far above everything else I've played, open world wise.
I'm fully aware of Elder Scrolls' shortcomings, but they still manage to be fun.

Sadly I find most open world games tedious, or just bad.

Dam, can't believe missed out Stalker, le shame.

Yea, def top 3. It's kind of like Gothic in that it's brutal, rough and full of jank. But something something sum of parts...

Has the special sauce that makes it an experience that's memorable, compared to your average competent but forgettable open-world game.

1. Skyrim

2. Oblivion

3. Fallout 4

No one can make an open world like bethesda can because they are the only ones still to this day that can make a world really feel alive.

Obviously this is not for the same reasons you gave your top 3, since action plays a major part for you,

I can understand why you like far cry 2, many people didn't like it at the time but the shooting mechanics were indeed extremely good for the time (and probably still are) , I really like the way how they portrayed africa, pity there weren't much animals in it and yes everything after that was not as good as fc2.

That's because they had to compete with crytek at that time, and that really elevated the competition for ubi.

Having said that, have you ever played the original crysis, don't play the x360 version tho, and even the x1 version is lackluster, because it is based on the same engine as the x360. The original pc version is still the best. It also has a sequel, crysis warhead.

Neither crysis 2 and crysis 3 can compete with it, or none of the far cry series for that matter, apart from the first one, which is also made by crytek and not by ubi (it was only published by ubi)

You might find sleeping dogs interesting (since you mentioned arkham), sleeping dogs is not really that much about cars and shooting like gta is, but more about martial arts, and they really done an amazing job. They also have a remaster.

You might also have a look at the first shadow of mordor.

Another great fantasy action rpg (lots of action but not too many dialogue) is dragon's dogma

you also mentioned semi open world but since this post is getting way too long I'll just leave terminator resistance here.

STALKER is semi open world not fully blown open world. otherwise it would be my first pick obv.

Breath of the Wild, Vice City, Arkham City.

HM: Fallout NV, modded Skyrim.
