Poll What are the odds that the PS5 will be completely BC with all Playstation console games? (87 votes)

100 % guaranteed to happen, I can see it on my crystal ball 6%
50 / 50 chance, now that Xbox is going that route 31%
0 percent chance, are you kidding me? 63%

Imagine if Sony comes out of nowhere and announces that the PS5 can play ALL Playstation games from PS1 through PS4. You think it could happen, SW? What are the chances? I don't see it happen with all, just PS4. But it would be a bombshell if it did happen. Agreed?

With all PS consoles? Not likely.

With PS4, almost guaranteed at this point.

I would say it's pretty unlikely, they don't have the best track record with bc as of late.

I doubt PS5 will be directly retrocompatible with PS4 the way Xbox is with some games, will you be able to play PS4 titles in PS5 ? Yes, you already are able to play many PS2 and PS3 games through “BC” .... but you have to purchase the software from their store.

I think they'll just continue with the "PS1/2/3 classics" ports/emulations/whatever.

How can anyone look at the situation around them and not conclude that there is a 0% chance of this happening?

Sony would have to go through the same process as Microsoft... for PS1/2/3 ... there is no magic sauce to fix this.

Cmon now... why is there even a poll... and why is 0% not 100%.

think.

With PS4, 50/50 at best. The other PS consoles, 0%.

They'd rather just add more to PSNow and charge you for it.

Well I wouldn’t say that it’s a 0% chance but I do think that it’s highly unlikely.

It honestly shouldn't be that hard. If a bunch of pirates on the internet can make emulators that will run every PS console in existence I don't know why the company that made PS consoles can't do it. File the fact that every console maker doesn't already do this under: why people pirate.

I see them doing BC for PS4 games but not PS1-PS3. Each Playstation had such different architecture that you would basically have to have the inner workings of at least PS2 and PS3 shoved into the PS5 and that could make it more bulky and expensive the than it should be.

No, I don't think they will. However they will add PS4 games to PSnow and include them within you monthly subscription cost.

It'll either be BC out of the box or, more likely, added to PSNow.

PS1 - Games don't scale to HD very well...

PS2 - Despite having somewhat of a working emulator they've only released games that didn't really use and tax the VU0 and VU1 on the Emotion Engine, it's these games that are a ball ache to emulate and require a lot CPU power....so it might have limited support.

PS3 - While RSX is a bog standard PC GPU and will be easy to emulate, Cell is the complete opposite and will be a complete bastard, not just from a compiler point of view but from the sheer grunt needed to run the code..... As an FYI Cell's ring bus ran at 300Gb/s and they'll really, really, really struggle to get that at the same speed on an emulator.

50/50.. IMO they'll watch XBOX on this.

Conspiracy but they'll both be watching each other preferring none do b/c unless market punishes them for it.

Doubt it, cows love to repurchase old games several times....

Also going by Sony’s track record they usually never have any games the first 2-3 years of a console lifetime, so if they can’t remaster old games what would the gullible cows throw money after??

It seems silly to me that people dismiss the option of PS4 BC in PS5. I would think a lot of people out there would be delighted to play their PS4 games in "Pro Mode" who may not have upgraded to the Pro yet. That alone would help elevate the PS5 as a must-have console for millions. As for PS1, 2, and 3, it is far more likely that they will continue to leverage PS Now for those generations.

Question should be, do we care about BC being in Ps5? And no, we shouldn't. We buy new consoles for new games!

Zero percent chance. Do you know how hard it is to emulate PS3 games? The only alternative is putting the old CPU and GPU (Cell and RSX) in the PS5, which ain't gonna happen, as it would make the console too expensive and more prone to overheating and death.

i also think it's about time they honor people's digital rights to PS1/PS2 classic they bought on PS3's digital store in future consoles, the PS4 has a functioning PS1/PS2 emulator so I see no reason they should be holding back on honoring those digital rights, sure PS3 titles will likely have BC problems because of the Cell, but emulators run off ISOs, and again, PS4 has a functioning PS1/PS2 emulator, no reason to at least give us that

A console manufacturer respecting the fact that customers already paid for a game once and should be able to play it on a new system? Ha! That's the way it should be, but sadly not the way it is.

@ezekiel43: The ps3 is by far the hardest ps console to emulate, but I think a good solution would be some sort of ps3 backwards compatible add on, it could have the ps3 cell processor and not be an internal piece, and would also allow people who want BC to have it and those who don't not.

@vfighter: It's one of the reasons, yes. And PC has a bigger install base than consoles, of course there are going to be more pirates. But it's been proven that consumer-friendly measures, like allowing consumers to play the games they've already purchased instead of making them buy them again, reduces piracy. Every time a movie comes out on Netflix its piracy frequency drops dramatically. Also, I find it amusing that you're calling people cheap bastards because they don't like having to keep buying the same game over and over again just to be able to play it on a different system.

I'm not going to say zero percent chance, but it is very small. This adds a lot of cost to a console, and PS4 showed it doesn't really affect sales.

Not gonna happen. Sony recently stopped servicing PS3 games on PSN. This tells us they have no intention to support PS3 gaming in the future, not on PS3, and not on PS5.

If they still use the x86 architecture at the next ps, sure. But there's probably high chance you'll pay for that bc(probably mixed with ps+).

Yeah, and the fact that they stopped pretty much tells you they're not gonna try that again with the PS5.

O chance, i would hope they start BC with PS4 games and boost them on Ps5 and do a better job with managing digital library to transistion over. I would be more inclined to trade in ps4 towards ps5 if my games carried over.

Now with that, PSNow could be built to handle games pre-ps4. PSnow just needs to get better and have a download option besides streaming, and Sony should look at touching up older games and activating multiplayer for games like Socom, twisted metal, warhawk, motorstorm, resistance.

BC doesn't make business sense. The console makers invest heavily in software and they need the consumers to buy new software. Notice how the 1 company that is offering BC is also the worst selling... There is no correlation between offering BC and success with sales. Hell, even software publishers want nothing more than to sell you a game that you already bought. Notice all the remasters/Definitive Editions this gen? The dev work was already done for the most part, yet folks bought games for a second (or third+) time. Message board gamers turn BC in to a huge deal, but they don't represent the real world.

Nintendo's success with the NES and SNES classic kinda proves consumers will buy old shit again even though they own it all already. The future is gonna be difficult for you entitled gamers

PS4's PS2 BC operating system software feature was hacked which enabled PS4 to play PS2 games without paying for it.

PS4's PS1/PS2 BC software feature is not the problem, but Sony's business profit motivation.

CELL's SPEs are just a variant from PowerPC Altivec with 128 registers with 256 KB local memory wall. The problem with SPEs are the 6 units magnitude i.e. that six 128bit SIMD units to be emulated not including PPE's 128bit SIMD unit.

Each SPE has 256 KB local memory. This is why I selected Skylake-X 8 core with each core has 1MB L2 cache (split by 2 with HyperThreads)

With Xbox 360, only 3 PPE Altivec with 128 registers are needed to be emulated. A single PPE Altivec core at 3.2Ghz is divided into two via hyperthreading, which two Jaguar CPU cores at 1.75Ghz can cover.

Intel/AMD AVX v2 with FMA3 hardware maps better with PowerPC's Altivec FMA3 features.

Yeah, PS3 is the one that could be an issue.

They really shouldn't have a problem emulating PS1 or PS2 though, and assuming they do a similar "off the shelf" architecture - PS4 games should be able to run native.
