I'm going with one of all the time greats... MGS 1, when McDonnell Miller reveals his true identity, Liquid Snake!

I remember seeing that for the first time and thinking, OH SHIT!! MIND BLOWN!!

Are there plot twists better than this, SW? What are the biggest plot twists in gaming?

@ghosts4ever: Ummm...I love Arkham Knight and all but that twist could be seen from miles away you'd have to be kinda "special" for it to surprise you.

3 of my favourites are from the bioshock series, in particular:

  • Bioshock 1
  • Minerva's Den
  • Bioshock Infinite

Bioshock 1's twist was spoiled to me and it still was a fantastic moment when it happened, that's just good world and character design imho.

Mass Effect 2 Overlord - You got to know the backstory on why but... F***! It makes the Revan "reveal" lamer than it already is.

Dammit Champ, I was gonna say similar as well. Anyone who knows Batman Mythos knew who he was. That shit was so obvious, Rocksteady wasn't even trying to hide it lol.

Star Ocean 3. All the characters exist inside a game simulation as NPCs. They exit the simulation and meet with their creators.

Literally comes out of nowhere.

At topic: Huh, hard to chose. There is not a single one that's standing out to me. But there are good and bad ways. Like Braid or Portal 2 or BioShock have good twists, FF8 or Star Ocean 3 really bad ones.

The shock of not playing as Snake past the tanker portion of MGS2 was a huge surprise to me.

Bioshock 1 had a nice twist as well.

OT -

The original Halflife comes to mind. While not as prevalent now the 1990's saw the X-files as a pop culture phenomenon, which helped fuel a craze in extraterrestrial government conspiracies.

Halflife, like many forms of media was a product of that, the basic plot-line involving a government cover-up with the Gman heavily influenced by the X-files antagonist "The Cigarette Smoking Man".

The interesting thing about Halflife which makes it's ending memorable, unlike something like Dues Ex or similar titles which had constant character interaction coupled with story-directing gameplay, up until that final sequence where the player has the option to work for the antagonist or effectively fail, the story-telling much like The X-files hinted at larger events happening vaguely beyond clarity than explicitly explaining, with the player largely reacting as a cog in a series of events than the one dictating them.

Not the greatest SH game but I had a blast with it. Played the Wii version and yeah, I found the ending pretty surprising. Great twist.

I'm assuming you mean the 2017 one, but there's a pretty unexpected plot surprise in the original as well towards the end of the game.

Disagree. It would have been the biggest plot twist ever, but they were afraid no one would know who Jason Todd was, so they started spoon feeding you information about the character throughout the game. Such a waste. It became predictable before the reveal.

FEAR had a pretty big twist; finding out that you and Paxton were the sons of Alma. And that Wade was actually Alma's father, so in turn Wade is the grandfather of the player character. But wait, there's more: in order to get pregnant, Alma was put into a coma until she hit puberty and then an embryo made of different DNA material, including Wade. So not only is there a whole twisted family tree there, but there's also a bit of incest going on too.

Personally probably Shadow Hearts Covenant. Most JRPG twist is either villain is god or becomes god so u kill god/super special teenager becomes god so the twist in this underrated JRPG regarding Karin's time travel, WW1 backdrop and Yuri's backstory was such a breath of fresh air.

Xenogears had a great twist about Fei and Elly as well. Unfortunate that Monolith didn't quite stick the landing for future Xenosaga and Xenoblade twists for me. Xenoblade 2 twist was about some lonely alternate timeline scientist from first game, it was terrible. Story writers just putting twist for the sake of it.

For more well known IPs, Silent Hill 2 comes to mind. Got mind blownwhen the twist u kill ur wife and Maria was just James perfect projection of her . To this day I am still learning new things regarding the lore of this game.

I've always felt that System Shock 2 did Bioshock's plot twist better (and earlier).

[s] SS2 does the radio reveal much earlier ("Oh no! Your radio friend is actually Shodan/Fontaine!"), and there's none of that brainwashing nonsense - you're morally culpable for helping one villain defeat another villain, which makes for a more interesting story.[/s]
