What are some of your pick-up-and-play video games?

I find myself less and less keen to play long, 20h+ story-focused games due to lack of time and mental energy.

Any suggestions for good games that are simply fun (but challenging) and can be enjoyed in short-bursts (or long sessions), that you can pick up at put down at any point?

Fractured But Whole is ridiculously laid back but actually offers engaging encounters on high difficulty. It's a great pick-up-and play (assuming you like the humor of course).

Valkyria Chronicles 4 has been more serious, but you can actually save and leave in the middle of an encounter, so it's pretty easy on the time-constrained modern gamer

Why not go for a multiplayer game like overwatch? Each match is 15-20 mins and as close to pick up and play as you can get.

I just got Onrush from the Playstation Pluse dealio. It's got party music and flashy stuff going on. Pretty cool. Then there is Pinball FX that has some nice tables. Batting the ball around bells, whistles and multi-colored lights is my kind of fun.

These, plus NiGHTS into Dreams, Gunstar Heroes, Guardian Heroes, the Thunder Force series, and so on, as well as Capcom stuff like Mega Man, etc.

Yeah old games a great for short play sessions. Easy to pick up and put down. I've been playing Skyrim the past year and every time I play I feel I have to put 6 hours aside to do so or I won't get any where.

Strange Brigade is one that comes to mind, easy to pick up & play and is quite the challenge on the harder difficulty settings.

Skate 3 is best pick up and play. I don't know anyone who doesn't love a good skateboarding game.
