Let me first state my position on VR in general. I really enjoy VR. Some of the most entertaining gaming memories I've had in the last year have been on VR exclusive games. That said, VR isn't the "next thing" in gaming and thinking about it that way is the wrong way to think about it. It's not a question of "either/or" between traditional gaming and VR gaming. They both have the room to co-exist and one doesn't need to replace the other. I think of VR as a premium peripheral in the same way that I think of a force feedback steering wheel or a HOTAS setup.

Now that said, the best VR games are games that are built for the VR experience from the ground up or that a lot of work was put into their VR versions. Not games where it was clumsily shoehorned into (or added with 3rd party utils like VorpX).

Here are some of my favorite VR games:

Robo Recall (Oculus exclusive free movement VR shooter/melee game with amazing Touch control physics-based combat

Lone Echo (Oculus exclusive narrative driven adventure game taking place in a space station in zero-G. Also Touch control based where you move yourself around by grabbing surfaces and pushing yourself)

Arizona Sunshine (Steam/Oculus free movement zombie shooter with a story and skirmish modes)

Sairento (Steam-based VR ninja action game with shooting/melee combat)

Vanishing Realms (Steam-based dungeon crawler with motion control based combat using swords, shields, and bows)

Audioshield (Motion control-based rhythm game)

RE7 (PS VR exclusive but a full AAA game with VR support)

Paranormal Activity (pretty good albeit jump scare reliant VR horror game)

SuperHot VR

Vanishing Realms

Euro Truck Simulator 2

Vertigo

Its a damn shame Unseen Diplomacy was never made into a full game i loved the idea of walking from room to room in the game using only your room scale space you quickly forget you are constantly moving back on yourself and in such a small space, its was one of my first VR experiences and still one of my favorites but just a bit short, and i don't think any other game has used this idea yet.

Also when the hell is Budget Cuts finally coming out??

I liked Unseen Diplomacy but my room was just a bit small for the large space requirements that game had. Still, using a large space and relying entirely on real locomotion made it feel like an escape room puzzle IRL.

As for Budget Cuts, that's probably the demo that I've had the most fun with in VR. So many hours wasted throwing knives at robots. Supposedly a real game version of it will come out in "early 2018" but we'll see. At least the dev isn't completely silent/dormant.

Echo Arena is fun but I suck at it. I'm flinging my body all around like a madman while my opponent destroys me with a few simple wrist flicks.

From Other Suns and Star Trek Bridge Crew are two I forgot to mention. FoS is a blast but at this point I may be done with it until they release some new content. I've gone through the endgame a few times at this point.

Yeah with Unseen Diplomacy i just managed to squeeze into the space requirements in my room but one side would have you pushing right up against the wall, its a great experience but it would limit the amount of people able to use it even further, being in VR and requiring so much space it probably would have had a tiny sale base which is a shame.

Budget cuts is the game i have had the most "accidents" in , as the game more than most made me forget i was in VR i still get mocked by my mates for the time i was in the crawl space in the roof and i wanted to see what was under me so iu tried to put my head down through the hole to check, naturally i head butted the floor with some force and 2 years later im still being mocked for it :P

Its funny that its the accidents you create in VR and the potential destruction of your expensive hardware due to it is the one thing that sells you the most on the experience :D

I Really want to play Lone Echo and Robo Recall but i wont invest in the occulus store without native support as i only own a Vive, im not spending my money on a store where the games i buy can only be accesed by a 3rd party hack, its a shame occulus doesnt see the benefit of getting customers into buying games in it's eco system aswell as buying its headsets.

In that case, just get the free stuff. Echo Arena is free. Brass Tactics Arena is free. Aircar is free, and I believe Lucky's Tale is free as well.

Already have. i was mainly commenting on how the lack of official support for my headset prevents from being monetarily invested in the oculus store, i wont spend money on a service or a game i can only use by installing a 3rd party hack.

I already have revive installed but its continued support or compatibility isnt guaranteed especially in any official capacity, thats just a hump im personally not willing to climb over. :)

Yeah, that's a fair point. You could spend $100 on a couple games only to have Revive disabled by Oculus a week later. I've got the Oculus, the Vive, and a Samsung Odyssey so I'm covered on all three platforms no matter what, but without that I might have the same reluctance. It's a shame, too, because Robo Recall is one of the most AAA games out there for VR but only Oculus users can play it natively.

I do have a Rift headset but I like games with a lot of depth that can end up being a 'long term' investment.

because of that the VR titles are not for me...yet, because most of them are short lived.

so with that I have to say:

Elite Dangerous

even though its not from the ground up.

Skyrim VR - It’s freaking Skyrim in VR! How could I not love it?

Elite Dangerous in VR- I’m a space nut so this game in VR is the stuff of dreams.

GT Sport in VR- I love cars and this game drives and looks awesome in VR. Nothing like picking out 1 car from my over a hundred virtual cars and racing it.

Eve Valkyrie- I love flying and shooting in space.

Far Point- Awesome FPS Experience in VR and it has giant spiders.

RE7 VR - Scares the shit out of me and I love it

Project Cars VR- Same reason I love GT VR. Racing in VR is the best.

Star Wars Battlefront VR- most immersive and best Star Wars experience ever. Too bad it’s too short. I would instantly buy a full game of this.

Star Trek Bridge Crew - I’m a Trekkie so this game is probably one of the best games ever for me :D

Megaton Rainfall- Super hero in VR experience. What’s not to love? It gives you unimaginable power and the ability to fly to any planet in the universe in VR!

I’m looking forward to Ace Combat 7 VR. ZOE VR, and Wipeout VR later this year. ? In fact, Ace Combat VR is in my top 3 most anticipated games this year.

My absolute favorite so far is Super Hot VR and Elite Dangerous took some setup but is also pretty damn cool in VR. (Navigating the galaxy map though is hell with my current setup and lack of knowledge.)

If I can circumvent the Bethesda Mod Police and install mods on a PC version of Skyrim VR then I am so going to buy it. Heck anyone would buy that. I want to see things like cheesewheel spells and skyrim porn mods in VR XD

I'll try From Other Suns and Vanishing Realms.

The year that marks the 2 year anniversary of Rift / Vive / PSVR.

People in 1974: "lol Gaming! Do people still use that? What year is it?"

People in 1979: "lol PCs! Do people still use that? What year is it?"

People in 2003: "lol Smartphones! Do people still use that? What year is it?"

See the pattern here? It shows that nothing gets there quickly. Tech takes a long time to be adopted.

ED has solid VR support even though it wasn't specifically designed for VR the way something like Eve Valkyrie is/was.

The only reason I don't play ED in VR is because while I enjoy what they are trying to do with the game, I don't find ED itself interesting enough to hold all of my attention most of the time. It grinds like an MMO, so I use a side monitor to watch TV/Movies while I earn credits.

I haven't played EV much lately but it's a great game. I just wish it had more/better SP content, like a proper campaign. RE7 VR is the only way I'm playing VR, but when I lost steam on the game (just because other stuff came out) I figured I'd wait for the PC version and start over, but sadly the exclusivity year has come and gone and no word of a PC VR version.

I forgot about ZOE and didn't know about ACE Combat.

Yes, I do think that. VR adoption has been meeting expectations on all fronts or exceeding in PSVR's case. Gaming wise, the potential is clearly there. Once you play Lone Echo / Echo Arena, Robo Recall, or Sprint Vector, there's no going back; at that point you start to realize that gaming and VR will work together as the tech and content grows.

The tech will be good enough for just about anyone's standards next gen, and the content lineup will be much bigger with big budget AAA games.

I've got the a lot of fun so far from Youtube vr. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed some of the games as well. Neo Retro Arcade. Reliving my 80s arcade.Space Pirate Trainer. Windlands. Rez. I think as time goes on this will get better, but motion sickness is always a risk particularly on fast paced games.

@Byshop: Sadly it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting more EV content. CCP sold the studio and they haven’t mentioned anything about more updates since the last major update we got which was the awesome Winter Update. I’m hoping Sony or some other 3rd publisher steps up to the plate and announces some space VR games this E3. Space sims and VR are a match made in heaven, I’m surprised we haven’t seen many of them.

Ace Combat 7 has good VR support from what I’ve been seeing. It’s a separate mode from the main game’s campaign/multiplayer and apparently comes with its own separate campaign. The graphics look awesome in previews and people seem blown away by it. It should be a great VR showcase when it launches later this year.

I haven't played a lot of VR games and only PS4 VR.

My favorite VR game is

Rigs: Mechanzied Combat League

Pinball FX2 VR was also alright.

Eve Valkyrie would be okay, but I don't like that I have to download a patch to be able to play.

That's a bummer.

Oh, and I forgot to mention Technolust. It's probably the least "game" of all of these, isn't terribly long, and is one of the earliest VR experiences (I ran early versions on my old DK2), but if you like William Gibson-ey 80s cyberpunk like Johnny Mnemonic or Shadowrun-style universes (minus the orcs and magic) then there's nothing better.

RE7

Skyrim VR

Batman Arkham VR

Job Simulator

GT Sport

Star Trek Bridge Crew

Farpoint

- just to name a few. IMO VR should be bigger by now. I think people have formed bad opinions aboot it based off of YouTube videos - which aren't remotely representative of what VR is actually like experiencing, and Internet forum crybabies that crap on the medium just because they're loyal to a brand that doesn't deliver on this breakthrough gaming tech. All I know is everyone who has tried it for the first time at my place has had the same look on their face when they take the rig off as I did... like you just experienced an orgasm, on every euphoric drug on earth, while on a rollercoaster :) I love VR <3

While games like robo recall, thrill of the fight and lone echo are amazing vr games.

Fallout 4 vr is still the one I like the most, it has the least vr implementation (like opening doors with a handle, manually reloading guns, picking up stuff...) but a world made by bethesda in vr is just plain amazing.

It also made my realize that the future of vr still lays in pancake gaming. Making a great game for a pancake screen and then porting it decently into vr is going to give us the best vr games. Allthough the port for fallout 4 vr could have been done much better, it still turned all of the vr content upside down. It's really the difference between arcade gaming and aaa+ games.

It also pushes the enveloppe in terms of system requirements, I never considered in all my life to buy a (near) top end card. Now it seems almost like a necessity. Damn those coinminers. Still stuck with my gtx 970.

There are like 3 games available on VR, and a bunch of tech demos.

RE7.

That's it. VR is lame.

And this is based off one system? Not a good judgement of VR.

No you're not the only one, just about the entire gaming population couldn't give a shit about VR, but the few hardcore loonies on here will try very, very hard to convince you otherwise lol.

People also didn't care about electricity, or TVs, or PCs, or Smartphones, or Gaming itself once upon a time. The mainstream doesn't take in new technology until there's a mass market potential for it. Most gamers have not tried VR which means they can still be convinced because the only way to judge VR is to try it for yourself.

Skyrim VR has teleportation as an option, which won't produce sickness.

I can say the same for any console. It requires me to gaze at one section of the store and pretend that only 3 real games exist. In other words, you're not looking at what's available, you're just looking at the names of a few games and calling it a day without doing research.

@blueberry_bandit: Yeah, I'll just spend over a 1000 dollars for the other headsets and a better PC, because my first experience with it was so brilliant.

6 by 6 feet seems to be the sweet spot for me, it's also the room that's available for me right now. Yesterday, I seemed not to have enough room in a firefight in fallout 4, but it was because I was at the edge of my playspace when I started the firefight, after some repositioning, everythng was a ok again.

Oculus asks me to enter my height when I do the oculus setup, so the floor in the game is pretty much the floor in real life for me. The only thing I sometimes have is that I sometimes walk with my back into a wall when backing up from a firefight or something, apart from that the guardian system does its job for me.

Lone echo and robo recall are nice. Robo recall is a bit too intense for me though, after half an hour I'm in sweat, lone echo is surely a nice game, allthough not easy enough on the stomach for me, I'm a teleporter. Still, they aren't really games that I would miss if I had a vive. They all feel more like games that belong in an arcade hall. Robo recall comes like straight out of the early nineties. The first time I booted up the game , I became nostalgic.

Fallout 4 vr is still infinitely better imo. I just hope by the time i'm sick of fallout 4 vr, they ported some other aaa game, maybe far cry 3 or 4, those games may suck as pancake games, they're probably pretty good in vr. Assassins creed would be a blast, climbing those buildings lol. or gta games. So much content, yet so many devs don't bother. I can only hope.

You just judged VR as a whole. Next time specify the system because otherwise I could judge all of console gaming based on Wii U.

Does it have to be a square? I have a decently sized room for the first time in years, but with my bed, the space at my desk (where I keep my PC) available for a VR setup is like 10x4 feet.

@mrbojangles25: No, the play space can be any shape or size that you want, up to the maximum dimensions supported by your chosen headset and sensor placement. The Vive can do 15x15 with two sensors and the Oculus can do something close to that, but it requires at least 3 (if not 4) sensors and they have to be attached to the computer via a combination of USB 3 and USB 2 (the first two sensors need USB 3, and then they prefer USB 2 for each sensor after that). Because the sensors are active in the Oculus and USB connections have distance limitations, the Oculus is a bit harder to set up for proper room scale. Once set up, though, both headsets work equally well.

When you set up the space, you "draw" the boundaries of your VR space using a motion controller (both in Vive and Oculus). Windows MR headsets "draw" with the headset cameras because they don't use sensors, only the cameras on the headset itself. I do this in hotels all the time when I bring VR with me to play on my laptop. However, the recognized play space will be the largest rectangle it can draw in the boundary you're drawn, but the chaperone/boundary system in VR will reflect the actual boundaries that you've drawn.

So the "walls" you see when you approach the edge will be the outer boundary, but when the VR system calculates the amount of "space" you have for a particular game it'll base it on the dimensions of that inner rectangle. However, in practice neither of these actually matter. If you don't physically run into something IRL, you can move as far as you want in VR space so long as you are still detected/detecting your sensors (and Windows MR headsets seem like they can go until you run out of cable since there are no sensors). The boundary wall is for your benefit since you can't see physical objects when you're playing, and the play space rectangle is just used to calculate how much space it thinks you have. Drawing a small space will not limit you in any way in a game. Personally, I actually like drawing a non-symmetrical boundary. When you're playing room scale VR games, it's very easy to get turned around. While the boundary wall keeps you from bumping into stuff (probably), when I take off my headset I frequently find myself facing in a completely different direction from what I thought. If I draw the boundary in a non-standard shape or with a weird corner or something it's easier to keep track of where I am in the room IRL. "Oh, that corner has an indentation where my fan is so I know I'm facing away from the couch" sort of thing.

The dimensions you mentioned are very similar to a lot of hotels that I play VR in. Wide laterally relative to the desk but not a lot of depth.

Robo Recall is a blast. The games that I really get you moving are among my favorite VR games. Even Lone Echo has you grabbing and pushing yourself through the world which I really enjoy (although I feel like I should be able to push myself faster than the game allows). It took me a little while but I am all about the walking/running locomotion now. Lone Echo doesn't disorient me but there are a couple games that I still get a little bit unbalanced when playing Windlands (that "Spiderman-esque swinging game) makes me feel like I'm about to fall over if I play it standing. Sairento I'm fine with but when I do a back flip and am aiming dual guns straight "up" to shoot enemies below me while I'm upside down still makes me teeter a bit. Still, I like to get moving and if I can work up a sweat then even better. Audioshield on harder difficulties is pretty good.

People complain about motion controls in general, but motion controls are great... when they aren't crap. Kinect was never particularly good or accurate, even on Xbox One. Move and WiiMote (even with Motion+) were better but not great compared to the spot on accuracy and speed of any VR motion control.

2 sensors are sufficient for my 6 by 6 playspace , don't know if two sensors will be enough for 10 by 4 though, 10 feet is a bit far maybe for one of the sensors but 8 by four would certainly work.

@commander: doesn't have to be ten feet, I mean if I could use a smaller space and still get the benefit from it, I'd rather do that.

Or do you kind of want to use the max amount of space you can provide?

If you mean Oculus, the issue with two sensors is if you turn completely around you can momentarily lose tracking to the touch controllers or headset. Most Oculus games are designed around the idea that you are facing the same or similar direction IRL the whole time whereas Vive games let you spin freely. A third sensor helps prevent this from happening.
