Hello,

so my friends, since both mario and sonic released this year. one success and other failed. and theres the reason why because sonic never worked in 3d.

now lets talk about older games. back in snes/genesis days when mario and sonic were very popular. while mario was just jump and progress platformer game. Sonic did everything better. it was innovative, fast paced and ring collecting instead of health/tries were very unique at that time. i was not much impressed by mario but when i played sonic when i was kid. i was blown away. the thing is sonic was unique game however many games at that time become mario clones where you attack enemies by simply jump on thier head.

sonic and knuckles is still best platformer ever imo.

so what do you think? were sonic games better than mario that time? or mario were better? not talking about todays sonic games anyways.

They were both terrible. Mario was always boring.

Easily. They're my favorite platformers of all-time, and I play them constantly. Mario isn't even the best platformer series on the NES and SNES; it's Mega Man.

On the NES you may have an argument. On the SNES? Lol. X and X3 are good. X2 is shit. 7 is weak. Rockman and Forte is good. Mario has no weak main entry on the NES and SNES(well nah, 2 is weak).

I prefer Sonic over Mario. It's probably because I had the Sega Genesis growing up and my brother had the Super Nintendo. I played them but I liked Sonic more. I was honestly more invested in Sonic as a character, though, because I used to watch the show every day after school and I love chilli dogs lmao

I disagree completely. X and X2 are absolutely amazing, and they're on my permanent rotation. X3 falls off a bit, but is still fun, and 7 is grossly underrated. I haven't played the SNES version of Mega Man and Bass because it was never released over here; the GBA port is terrible though. Mario World is alright even though it looks bland and only has like two songs. Yoshi's Island; I can't stand that game.

Never understood the love people have for X2. Maybe they got burnt out by the time they played X3. They're all very similar after all.

Wouldn't say 7 is underrated. The controls were pretty awful.

sonic had more of a WOW factor.

like it was amazing going so fast and exhilarating.

however, mario world took you to another world where you could lose yourself in. it innovated the platforming genre. i loved sonic but i believed mario was better.

Sonic games were more fun and intricate but I dunno if they were necessarily BETTER. Mario was always slow, calm, basic but some people like that over Sonic.

I.......am not one of those people.

X2 is basically the same as X1, that's why. X3 is unbalanced in the beginning, has a soundtrack that doesn't sound good on the SNES, and it implements Zero in a very half-ass way.

Yeah, I don't think that at all. I've played 7 enough times, and recently on the Legacy Collection 2, and it's great.

Compare 7 to Megaman and Bass or 8 on the Playstation. Rockman & Forte and 8 feel smooth, the controls are responsive and the movements fluid. 7 feels very stiff, the jumps are jittery as hell and the movements are very clunky.

X2 being the same as X isn't a good thing though. Wasn't there like one Zero level and it was the first? I haven't played that game in at least 5 years.

I like 8 too, but I think the handling is fine in 7. I can still beat the game properly anyway, so the movement doesn't affect me.

X2 being similar to it is a good thing when X is the best Mega Man game ever. That Zero level belongs to X3, and like I wrote, it's kind of half-ass. Playing as Zero didn't become fun until X4, which is my third favorite after X1 & X2.

Both were amazing, enjoyed playing all the old school Sonic and Mario games. Sonic probably edged out Mario for me by a bit though as I was a Sega kid.

3d Sonic vs Mario though...Mario by a f**king landslide.

Yes. I was blown away by sonic at the time. But that’s my impression whenever I walked by a game store like toys r us. I never had a sega though, always was a Nintendo kid.

Whenever I Demoed the game, it was really special.

No, Mario has always been miles better. The only thing Sonic had back in the Genesis days was arguably better graphics and advertising.

I have a lot more experience with Mario titles and I never owned a Sonic game on the older systems, it was always a game I played at some friends' place. I do own most of them now though on Xbox One through the BC program, and I got the recent Sonic Mania.

Mario is slower paced and has more variety overall.... I find the series a little difficult to compare honestly. However, Sonic always had that extra allure for me that I couldn't find in Mario titles, it's not something I can necessarily put into words but I guess I would say Sonic was more stylish overall, and it was very satisfying to blaze past a big chunk of a level in ball form, it was very satisfying and gave me a rush that I couldn't really find in a Mario game.

The level design is challenging too I like that about Sonic and how I often find new secret whenever I play the game. Also, Green Hill theme tune is one of my favorite gaming songs ever. So I like both series for different reasons, I can't really say which one is better.

No. Imo 2d Sonic sucks as much as 3d. Never liked the level design and find it to be at odds with the character. To me they're games that appear to encourage speed but keep punishing you with cheap deaths/obstacles that completely destroy the flow. Still remember the day my sister lend me her SNES and how Mario blew my mind.

Don't know. Not really saying it's bad, but it never worked for me. Never was a Sega hater too, still have my original Mega Drive working and plugged into the TV.

No, but Megaman could be argued.

Its hard for me to call if it was between Mario and MM, to this day about once a year i still pick up and beat super mario brothers or world and a MM game and those are the only two game franchises i do this with. I was the kid with the Sega on my block too and had Sonic, fun game but it never held up to Mario or Megaman.

Yoshi's Island > Sonic 3 & Knuckles > Super Mario World > Super Mario Bros. 3 > Sonic the Hedgehog 2 > Sonic the Hedgehog > The Lost Levels > Super Mario Bros. > Sonic CD > Knuckles Chaotix.

  • Mario: 10 + 8 + 7 + 4 + 3 = 32
  • Sonic: 9 + 6 + 5 + 2 + 1 = 23

There you go, folks, my own opinion.
