Hello friends

So darkness 2 was released in 2012. an era where most of FPS were COD clones ala modern military shooters. walk in straight line and follow orders but they always overshadow better FPS games compare to them.

Darkness 2 was also among them. when I first played it back in days I didnot liked it much but then replayed it and found its quite enjoyable. never played original since it was not released on PC but watching it feel like it was Riddick clone since it was made by starbreeze and was dark and gritty shooter while sequel is comic book cell-shaded style arcade shooter. it has unique mechanics ie demonic arms that was not done before any FPS. and feel like its Venom the FPS game.

It was not masterpiece or anything (that was Metro among them in that era) but it was better than majory of 7th gen shooters that were MMS. the game was overlooked imo and barely got mentioned.

so my friends. was this underrated game that was overlooked? lets discuss.

Nah, it was pretty forgettable, didn't do anything special, and was a lesser product compared to The Darkness 1.

Really good games, part 2 ended with a cliffhanger. I'm not sure why there is not a part 3.

It's true, we got every other Starbreeze game. Now would be a perfect time to bring it over to PC, if this industry was still interested in singleplayer FPS.

As a fan of the Darkness comics, I played the first game on Xbox 360 years ago, blew my mind how awesome the game was and truly kept to its comic roots. Graphics at the time was really good. Sadly I didn't enjoy the Darkness 2, the cel-shaded was okay but I expected to be on the level on the first game and yeah, it was forgettable only because the first game was great.

Yes.

Really fun, really great story, cool anti-hero protagonist, really good mechanics what with the Darnkess and shadows mechanics. Just a great shooter that somehow managed to be a great, pure shooter of old while also adding in new elements.

And so. Damn. VIOLENT! I don't even think Doom Eternal glory kills are as violent as The Darkness 2's kills.

liked the first one never got around to playing 2. The series got slept on by alot of people

Shadows of the damned was another one that went under a lot of peoples radars and its a lot better than most 3rd person shooters.

Story wise, maybe, but the gameplay was a vast improvement over the 1st and thats not even debatable. Recently played the original and the gameplay is a**. It did NOT age well, trust me. The Darkness 2 gameplay is way more fun. The only downside with the game is its length, reaching barely 4 to 5 hours.

I still need to play it, in fact even grabbed it to try via BC back when I was using my XB1X, but now I should see how it works on XSX. I hadn't played first either so started with that. Ugh, 7th gen games, it needs some BC enhancements. But I will try again. Played some Dead Space 3 the other day and looks so much better than when I played it on XB1X.

It's a good game and it plays better then the 1st . I prefer the look of the 1st and overall vibe of the 1st though.

I thought both Darkness games were mediocre. Not terrible, but not great.

Darkness 1 had a fair bit of jankiness but felt like a unique breath of fresh air in an oversaturated genre, providing some excellent gameplay feedback, interesting environment interaction through light use, as well as some great story and atmosphere. On those latter points, the second definitely falls short. The cell shaded art design was nowhere near as effective for a gritty modern fantasy story, and the story basically felt unnecessary, rushed, and incomplete. I remember the gameplay still being pretty good, better than 1 even, but ultimately missing some of the freshness that the first game had.

I would love to see the first get a remaster. The second? Eh, I'd take it or leave it.

Darkness 2 was more generic. Still fun enough, but very linear fps of that era. The first Darkness is jank, but there's so much other good stuff in that. Including its soundtrack.

Seemed to have scored about right.

Middling FPS.

@sargentd: Loved the first. Liked the second (particularly the carnival). I agree that Shadows of the Damned was good (and certainly unique!)
