The movies that win Oscars are NOT the movies that most people enjoy. The same thing holds true for video games. Often, the top-rated games are NOT the most beloved.

Please explain why this happens.  I really don't understand it. Is it elitism? Arrogance? Moneyhats?

People love different movies for many different reasons, but Oscar voters nominate movies for only a few reasons. For example, many people LOVE Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but it would never, and I mean never, win an Oscar.

Why not?

Because they have their own with P-word shaped oscars.

300 won't win an Oscar but I would never pick an Oscar winner like the random love drama over that. 300 is awesome. But movie critics suck. game critics are far more helpful.

300 was an awesome movie. But critics were Meh about it. That's exactly what I'm talking about. Video game reviewers are becoming like movie reviewers. They ARE more helpful right now, but there is definitely a disconnect. Look at the sales for proof.

I'm interested...what do you mean? GoW2 is rated AAA all over and is killing the charts right now.

But that's not always true. Look at Okami for proof. I hope you'll at least admit that.

The Oscars are an exercise is back patting, and fixing prior mistakes.

Video game reviews are read by a minority of video game buyers. Their sphere of influence is very small in terms of the market as a whole. Liscences, and big advertising budgets go a long way to making sales.

Do movie goers read a lot of reviews before going? or are they more influenced by advertising?

If you're taking that angle (well-reviewed games should get good sales) then it's never going to happen consistently, and for several reasons. The public never even knew about that game. Did it have an advertising campaign at all? The same holds true for Beyond Good and Evil and Eternal Darkness. They were new IPs without much advertising and people discovered their greatness far later (at which time they became "cult classics"). It's often a matter of public awareness. It happens with the Oscars too though - I'd never heard of Pan's Labrynth until the Oscar hubbub.

Edit: It really is a shame that the general public doesn't get much information on these types of products.

Movie goers read revies in newspapers, and since movies get much more space than video games in the papers, they are noticed much more.

I don't know what film magazines there are in the States, but over here, Empire and Total Film cater to a small audience compared to the national press.
