http://www.theverge.com/2015/3/1/8127445/htc-vive-valve-vr-headset

HTC has revealed that they're collaborating with Valve in the development of their very own VR headset, called Vive.

HTC's Jeff Gattis explained on stage that it offers 90Hz refresh rate and 360-degree views. "It's also really light, so you can wear it for a long time without feeling weighed down." It will be available with special wireless controllers for manipulating objects or shooting weapons through hand tracking.

It's also set to be available to consumers late this year

Wait, is this their big GDC announcement, or is that still to come?

You mean Valve? Thei main points of focus at GDC will be the Steam Machines, Steam Controller and, revealed a few days ago, their new VR Headset, now officially confirmed.

It's obvious they're all connected and will be part of Valve's big presentation there.

@deadline-zero0: Yes, sorry, I should have been more specific. My question was, is this their big GDC VR announcement? Or is there going to be more than this? Specifically as far as VR goes, that is.

@NVIDIATI:

Probably because it's HTC that are the main partner between them and Valve.

Oculus need to get their act in gear if Mr Facebook is going to get his cash back. They may be the company re-igniting the fad but with the lack of information from them they may be missing the early shipping boat.

The Vive VR headset will be paired up with a PC, and does not require a smartphone like Samsung's VR headset.

hTC also announced the One M9 with Snapdragon 810 and 3 GB LPDDR4. This means the device has support for Android Extension Pack, which brings it up to par with modern API's and features such as tessellation and geometry shaders. With performance being the only bottleneck, this device can run desktop quality rendering from gaming engines such Epic's Unreal Engine 4.7.

@charizard1605: Not sure which announcement you're refering too.

There have been hints over the last couple of week that Valve was developing a vr set, but no proof. Up until now, we didn't know anything certain about it.

Now that's it's revealed, but we can expect more in terms of software and applications from Valve at GDC.

@deadline-zero0: A VR announcement is what I was referring to, I guess. I find this interesting, I thought Valve would be manufacturing its own VR hardware. But HTC is certainly an excellent partner, can't begrudge them their choice.

They're a small software company. They're not even going to manufactuer the Steam Machines themselves.

It's success will be determined entirely by the price.

Honestly this makes me yawn, there are already too damn many VR headsets coming out in the market.. It was a big deal when the Rift was announced and show, now after a half dozen others have announced their own version... I want to hear more about their Steam controller.. Seeing as that had some really awesome ideas in making gamepads more accurate while holding most of the advantages of the gamepads..

3 proper brands (Vive, Oculus and Morpheus) is too many?

Actually, 2 since Morpheus is Sony exclusive and probably won't be usable with other platforms.

What's the point if we're still going to play the same games from years ago? I'd rather they focus on new titles instead of these gimmicks.

This also comes with a custom controller. I assume its Valve's steam controller. It utilizes a similar concept that sony uses with its control tracking.

They were, up until the point Facebook bought them. Then Valve started looking for other partners.

This one will be an open platform, like a lot of what Valve does.
