Valve has no interest in making console games

It sounds like Valve has no interest in making console games.

"We get really frustrated working in walled gardens," Valve founder Gabe Newell said at a media roundtable at Valve's offices attended by Eurogamer.

Valve released a plethora of console games in the last generation, including The Orange Box, Portal 2, both Left 4 Dead games and Counter-Strike: GO. The current generation of consoles is selling even better, relative to how far along in its lifespan it is. So why is Valve yet to get stuck in?

"So you try to talk to someone who's doing product planning on a console about free-to-play games and they say 'Oh, we're not sure free-to-play is a good idea' and you're like 'the ship has left'," Newell said of the cultural difference working with console developers after specialising in PC.

A couple of Valve's big games are free-to-play, including massive MOBA Dota 2 and competitive shooter Team Fortress 2. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, however, remains £11.99. Left 4 Dead 2 is £14.99.

"There have been cases where we've updated products 5-6 times in a day," he added. "When we did the original iOS of Steam App, right, we shipped it, we got a whole bunch of feedback and like the next day we're ready to do an update. We weren't able to get that update out for six months! And we couldn't find out why they wouldn't release it! They wouldn't tell us. This is the life that you have in these environments. And finally they shipped it! And they wouldn't tell us why they finally shipped it.

"So for us, while we're spending all of our time trying to be as tunnel-vision in this loop with our customers, to all of a sudden have this complete uncertainty about doing updates... Like we don't know how to operate.

"We're just too stupid to know how to be a successful iOS developer," he railed. "'Cause for us, everything that we do, is to make our lives easier and build tools to make other software developer's lives easier.

"We don't know how to do what we do,' he says, with a heaping spoonful of salt.

"I'm sure that other people are wildly successful in those environments, but sort of our DNA tend to not work well when someone is trying to insert a lot of process between us and our customers."

No shit. Valve has barely any interest in keep making PC games, who would imagine they have no interest in making console games ?

Valve at this point don't need to make games. Also releasing game on other platform like psn and xbl doesn't seem like a good move atm when they themselves are digital stores on in ways competition. Valve influence is already strong that there games are guaranteed to sale.

thier last full FPS game was Half life 2. till than MP. Coop and F2P games they released plus portal 2 which was sequel to 2 hour demo.

Yes, we all know that they too lazy to make games. A new L4D game for current gen platforms would guarantee them so many millions, let alone HL3, but why would they even try? Work is hard...

VR can happily be used for flight and car sims, the most hardcoreddness games around.

Alot of pc games that use 200+ keys and a mouse like the Witcher 3 are really very shallow. Phantom Hourglass operates with a single pen and it had much more depth to it's dungeons than repetitively whacking monsters with a terrible targeting system. Mobile games arguably suck only because of cynical Publishers, the control scheme and hardware could make very good games with effort beyond trying to scam little kids and soccer moms out of thousands of dollars - which is basically what AAA gaming is becoming.

Waiting on Left 4 Dead 3

Of course mobile game are games, they are just no games you like. You are not at the centre of the gaming universe.

Why make games when you could sell other games and have more profit for a fraction of the cost of making them.

Fat slob doesn't even have enough energy to walk across his living room let alone make games. Why do that when he can just keep making money middle-manning Hermits.

Pretty sure this was a given after their treatment of the Orange Box on the 360/PS3.

TF2/CS GO NEVER got supported or patched.

I believe MS and SONY both charge $$$ for patches so it's not worth it to Valve.

Valve is my #1 PC company though.

It's no secret they dislike consoles. However, I doubt they would pass up the opportunity to release Left 4 Dead 3 on all platforms.

Running Steam is a fulltime job. I'm not surprised. Does Valve even have time to make PC games anymore?

I hope it's not true :( I couldn't imagine not having Orange Box and Portal 2 on consoles... If they release more non-VR games in the future, I really hope they come to consoles eventually.

A bribe from Sony or Microsoft of free Dunkin Donuts for a year or two is all it would take for Gabe to flip flop on this and start making console games again

lol I remember when Valve had no interest in making PS3 games, then they made the awesome Portal 2 and released it on the PS3 with cross-platform (PS3/PC) gameplay. I even got the Steam version for free for buying Portal 2 for the PS3.

Valve might not "make games" in the traditional sense, but they do far more for gaming than anyone realizes.

They have no interest in making games for anybody, period. Since they're the dominant PC digital distribution platform, all they have to do is sit back, rake in the 30% of all third party PC game sales and call it a day.

...but I wouldn't make games for consoles either, **** that shit. I'd make them for PC, get them to scale well on a wide range of hardware, and then pay someone to make the console versions. They would all release on the same date.
