The Top 5 are Portables.

I like portables.....but I prefer consoles any day. Japan is different for sure.

They practically took over Japan.

Wow, 9 out of 10 games are on Nintendo systems. That's some Nintendomination right there. And 7 of them are on the 3DS, showing just how dominant portables are in a country that's "always on the move".

The only one that isn't Nintendo-related is GTA5. That's probably the first time a Western (let alone British) game has dominated Japan's console market... whatever little there's left of it.

Pretty cool that Wii-U is leading consoles, i dont want PS4 doing great there.

I'll be the first to admit, I don't really pay attention to sales, so maybe this is obvious. But it blows my mind that their top selling game of the year didn't even sell 5 million copies there

japanese culture is a lot different than ours, over there you see a group of 5-10 people huddled together all playing their 3DS and they all play it on their way to work and back home as well.

That's pretty normal. I don't know of any game that has sold 5 million copies in a single year in Japan.

Anyway, in terms of revenue, Japan's best-selling game last year was actually the smartphone app Puzzle & Dragons (which I briefly mentioned in my Japan smartphone thread), which grossed over $1.5 billion last year.

Wow only one Non-Japanese made game was on that list? And it also happens to be the only Non-Nintendo console game to make it as well. The Japanese are mostly into the 3DS now as a gaming community. But it's cool that GTA is doing ok there.

Surprised GTAV is doing so well in Japan. It also really sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the top 10.
