For $3,99 on most Steam sales... no sh*t sherlock. Those are a lot of units sold but, I mean, how much profit can it turn when sold at that price?
If you show me the revenue ratio between consoles and PC, then you would have a case
Like this doesn't happen on console, with packins etc. oh buy a ps4 now and get tomb raider and this and that game for free.
It's a sale and it's money. what profit they make on any sale nobody ever knows.
It just proofs there is a good playerbase for tomb raider still on PC and that they should cater towards it with better price points or other solutions.
I think a good solution would be something like a free to play model in there future games. As that's where pc gaming mostly is these days.
Also localize and market the game for Chinese PC gamers.
Also we have no idea how many copies were sold at what specific prices. But if we assumed all 5 million were sold at $5 (even though it very likely didn't) than it would have made $25 million and $17.5 million after steam cuts. I'm pretty sure at least the first 1-3 million copies sold were between $20-$60 with probably most being $20 or $30. Assuming 3 million were sold for $20 than it would have made $60 million and $42 million after Steam cuts.
This is nothing new, sales means nothing already for ages. They can heavily influence sale numbers if they want too. The real thing that counts is how much they actually made with the game and how much it actually costs them. And how many projects they failed to reach that one succesfull one.
I can fail 5 projects that cost me 100m each, and the 1 project that makes me 800m with 200m cost, still isn't going to help me out on any level. I just know where to focus on next.
Then you can see how healthy that company really is, and how they will move forwards.
It's the same as with mmo's that announce we have 4 million unique accounts that logged in the last month !.
For a game that has a monthly fee that sounds mighty impressive, yet they forgot to mention they had 3 weeks before they pushed the final numbers on paper, a free to play week for everybody to experience the game for totally free.
Hell even i made a account but stopped playing after a day or so. So yea, i paid nothing and still get counted into there success.
Same as with shipped versus sold etc etc.
If PC sales actually involve sales of any kind that brought in any level of money, then the conclusion we can have is that PC segment is still interested in tomb raider and they could focus on that. But if it brought in any money that sustains the company at any decent level, who knows.
