Free-to-play ‘Titanfall’ battle royale ‘Apex Legends’ reportedly launching soon

Apex Legends, a free-to-play, battle royale spinoff of the Titanfallseries, is reportedly launching for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC very soon.

Esports journalist Rod Breslau tweeted about Apex Legends, which is said to be rolling out tomorrow, February 4.

Apex Legends will feature heroes with unique abilities, with a maximum of 60 players per server in battle royale fashion. Similar to other games in the genre, there will also be an option to compete in teams, up to three players each.

One of the major differences between Apex Legends and Titanfall is that there will be none of the massive mechs. The game will be set in the same universe, but will instead focus on heroes, similar to Overwatch. Also, like the massively popularly multiplayer shooter, Apex Legends will feature and microtransactions and loot boxes for cosmetic items and other in-game content.

Kotaku reported that it had heard the same details about Apex Legends, with a tipster saying that the game plays like a combination of Titanfall, Overwatch, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4‘s Blackout mode. Publisher Electronic Arts reportedly recently held an event for streamers, which is probably how details of the Titanfall spinoff leaked.

Kotaku added that when Electronic Arts purchased Titanfalldeveloper Respawn Entertainment in the fall of 2017, it heard from a source within Respawn that Titanfall 3 was already well into development, with the plan to release the game at the end of 2018. However, there are concerns that Titanfall 3, which used a modified version of Valve’s Source engine, may not look as good asTitanfalland Titanfall 2once it is released.

Apex Legends will supposedly be a stopgap as Titanfall 3 was pushed back, perhaps for development to switch engines. There is a possibility that the work that was done for Titanfall 3 turned into Apex Legends, but in any case, Titanfall 3 will likely not be announced or released any time soon.

Apex Legends is set to see the light of day, which already gives it a better outcome than another Titanfall spinoff, Titanfall: Frontline. The collectible card game for mobile devices was cancelled a year ago after months of development and extensive beta testing, because “the experience wasn’t ready to deliver the intense action-packed gameplay synonymous with Titanfall.”

Loved the first, hated the second (they ruined the multiplayer), didn’t know 3 was in development, and WTF no Titans in the stopgap?!?

most people who played and liked titanfall 2 is solely for SP. as most of them hated its MP unlike original game.

Titanfall 2's single player was one of the best shooter campaigns in a long time, the multiplayer was kind of janky but passable don't really see any point in a BR, who knows respawn might be able to do something different with the genre but talk about releasing into a crowded space.

This is positive: more time for Titanfall 3 development and a PUBG clone for people that wanted that crap.

Titanfall 2's multiplayer wasn't all that it could've been because they changed a lot of things, which was unnecessary because Titanfall 1 was perfect.

And the worst offender was they made the Titans absolutely throwaway. You'd get one and lose it five seconds later. Get one again in 5 minutes and lose it... rinse and repeat. In titanfall 1 you had to work for one, but once you had one... oh boy!

I love Titanfall. Will definitely give this a try even though it's not really Titanfall, lol.

Hmm, I'll try it out and keep an open mind, I'm a big fan of the core gameplay of Titanfall

Source is old as shit mate, Valve started working on the engine when they finished Half Life 1 in the late 90s.

Titanfall 2 still looks great, but you need to start coming to grips with reality and face the fact that not every chance in this world results in your worst nightmare.

Titanfall is fast paced game that has controlling of old school type of FPS.

having run on frostbite engine will slow it down. and knowing EA now owned titanfall instead of respawn. respawn will have less freedom and has to do what EA say. kinda like how 4A games work under deep silver.

during titanfall 2 they were partners. respawn decide to use source engine to titanfall because that work for that kind of game. frostbite will only looks nice but will play like crap.

I really enjoy the Titanfall games myself, the first was great and the second one was even better. I definitely want a proper third game but I check this one out, could be a lot of fun.

It's a defining feature. Why bother with BR if it might as well not be Tittyfall?

BR games aren't really all that balanced.

Make the mechs something they find on the map, in random places, and random models.

I really enjoyed the SP in TF2, but didn't play the MP. This seems kinda lame with no Titans, considering CoD has emulated TF's pilot traversal (one of the coolest aspects of the games.)

People need to be more concerned with creating their own pie than getting their own piece of an existing one.

Yeah, Battle Royale is a popularr sub-genre. Doesn't mean everyone should do it, though.

It’s amazing that the single player in T2 stole the hype from the multiplayer....its even more amazing that one of the key characters who stole the show and was half the fun was a mech...it’s even more crazy that after all that EA says “here’s a Titanfall multiplayer game with no mechs”.

I think a monkey could run that company better.

I've heard that EA were not involved in any gameplay/design choices in Apex Legends, all that came from within Respawn.

It look like Respawns Blackout mode if there were still part of COD rotation lol. Kinda bummed they did not go as far as to having the Titans in there. It looks interesting though. I like the idea that you can respawn your teammates in squad play.

I'll give it a shot, I liked the Titanfall 2 movement and I also enjoyed Overwatch.

I feel bad for fans of the series. I heard it was the only good game EA has put out in the last 30 years. Of course, I didn't buy it, because it''s EA and I knew if people weren't being disgusting abhorrent liars, EA would find a way to inject it's disgusting reptilian seed, souring whatever good existed.

And now, in the most uninspired manner possible, it's abandoned it all in favor of easy money where little fortnite kids can pew pew each other. About to be rammed up the buttocks with every-payment humanly imaginable.

The reason why it was good because Respawn and EA were partners. and respawn had complete freedom what to do with titanfall. as a result they made a great but short campaign like COD1 and 2 were. or even better.

The pilot gameplay is gone, the titan gameplay is gone, so that pretty much removes all the DNA the series had.

Battle royale as a genre just doesn't do it for me. I love grounded shooters that are based around teamplay and tactics:

Day of Infamy, Insurgency, Hell let Loose, Rising Storm, Red Orchestra, Battlefield. Stuff like that.

@uninspiredcup: It's not back unfortunately. TF2 had some of the best sp campaigning in years, and this - being Titanfall minus the Titans, jetpacks and wallcrawling - is not what I was looking forward to.

This goes to my point about Devs being encouraged to produce FTP games instead of AAA games by Sony when FTP games don't need PSN to play online.

Either make all online gaming free, or all paid. Giving advantages to FTP games is not the way forward.
