Plenty of games use it as an extra button or the menu button. Not to mention there are plenty of games you can designate the pad to just about any action you want as well. In MMO's and other online games it is often used to pull up chat or a map. In some shooters or MMO's it doubles as a way to move a cursor like in FFXIV. In some games different parts of the pad zoom in or out on a character in 3rd person or change the camera orientation as well.

Is it underutilized? Yeah probably. Do I care? No, not really.

What are you talking about? I use it all the time.

Describe your usage.

I use it to bring up the menu, inventory, leaderboard, map, activities, highlight objectives, etc. Here are some games that use the touchpad. I feel like almost all the big games use it somehow.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Press touchpad for map

swipe left on touchpad for Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man App activities

Destruction AllStars (view leaderboard)

Returnal (suit computer/game menu)

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

(map/you can switch to separate tabs on armor selection, items to collect, weapons, gadgets and character galleries)

Days Gone

Touchpad UpStorylinesStorylines
Touchpad DownSkillsSkills
Touchpad LeftInventoryInventory
Touchpad RightMap

Ghost of Tsushima

Touchpad swipe up

Call Guiding Wind

Touchpad swipe down

Bow

Touchpad swipe left

Play Song on flute

Touchpad swipe right

Clean and sheath sword

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Hold Touchpad for world menu

Death Stranding

Call/comment

Demon's Souls Remake

Touchpad brings up toolbelt menu

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Scoreboard/Objectives

Chivalry 2

toggle between first and third person view/leaderboard

@ButDuuude: So you use it as a button, as i mentioned in the OP? Where are the swiping features at? Its like having a smartphone where you're only pressing buttons, even tho you have a touchscreen.

It is unused, not going to argue that. But I can think of at least one attempt by the game Erica to make it happen and that was enough for me to hope to avoid it ever after. Of course that was a tiny indie game, and I'm sure it could be implemented better...I'd just rather not. I kind of like how the touchpad is a big button that is often used for maps or something I commonly use. It works for me.

Two games and another one to pull out a spiderman app? Where is the function to use it as a mouse cursor during inventory management? In certain games, it could be used to solve puzzles, and by more than simply swiping left or right. But all of these things are never done. Its like one game out of 50 is using the swiping feature, and its never even smartly used.

I think most people in the game industry agree that the touchpad is an overengineered pile of turd and because the Select button is replaced with Share, the touchpad is the new Select button.

And in the few PC games that support the Dualshock 4, the touchpad is not even a consideration at this point, with Share being used as a select button as it'd otherwise do nothing on PC.
