The Power of PC: Old Games made Amazing! (56k)

Hey everyone,

So I've been playing through quite a few old games lately, and I thought I'd share some pics of them. Some games such as Deus Ex and System Shock 2 have been heavily modified, whereas others such as Swat 4 have been left untouched, but rendered at 1080p. I am gonna look into downsampling on my AMD card as that would likely make them look even better.

If you're wondering what's next, I plan on heavily modding my copy of Freelancer (there's some great looking mods out there) and I'll probably take some pics of Morrowind, which I also just modded the shit out of.

Sadly, you don't actually get pc games like those anymore since they are now essentially console games, for console gamers.

The irony is, for all the scorn pc gamers push on console gamers, they actually buy the games and thus get to be head at the table. Perhaps a master race existed, no more. Unless you count playing slightly sharper console games as pc gaming.

Yeah, I would have had them earlier, but my friend wanted me to play the Discovery Freelancer mod with him online and they won't even allow you to modify your .ini files, let alone install non-Discovery Freelancer mods in conjunction with it.

I'll definitely take advantage of these once I play some of these games.

So was anything changed for Splinter Cell Chaos Theory?

I agree, one of the things that I love about PC gaming is how great old-school gaming it's self is, especially when it comes to community aspects. I can fire up say Counter Strike right now and find a ton of people on it, and that game out in the late 90's I think. No console game can say the same. Plus with mods you can make those older games look and run amazing!

That being said, I still prefer console gaming overall. It's not as expensive I find and it's far more convenient from my experience. But to each his own.

Freelancer would be ballin' as shit. It really sucks that we never got a Freelancer 2.

I love the fact that you can render virtually any PC game in 1080p or higher resolution and even add Anti-aliasing in most of them. AA and HD + resolution really makes old games look decent.

No matter how good the textures and stuff are, if its in 480p with no AA and 4:3 it'll be ugly as sin.

Jagged Alliance still gets some love these days in my PC.

Yeah. Older games put through high res and filtering begin to look incredible. It's bassicaly getting for free what HD remakes do on consoles.

Plus often there are also some great visual mods avaible to spice things up.

Yep, that's exactly what I used for SS2. I didn't do anything for Chaos Theory, although I'd like to get some way to force AA in Chaos Theory; currently, the game gives you two options: AA or shader model 3.0. I hate having to sacrifice AA, but the game really looks amazing with those better shaders. If I could downsample it at 4K I think it could eliminate the AA.

Why not force AA through GPU drivers?

Dues Ex looks really good. I stopped playing it after the first level because it had audio issues.

My friend, Dead Space (vastly inferior console title) was originally suppose to be System Shock 3.

This highlights the detriment of console gaming, they are simply unable to produce sophisticated titles.

Old School games are amazing . Playing them in HD is nothing but epic experience .

Is it just me, or are the low-poly models from Deus Ex very distracting when a graphics mod is installed?

Do you play anything but FPS games? I swear that's all you talk about.

I am updating the album with new Swat 4 images. This time I am forcing supersampling in the control panel. Turned out real well. Hopefully I can do the same for Chaos Theory.

There's a mod to update the low-poly models on almost everything if anyone is interested, here's a few screenshots of my modded version of Deus Ex (New Vision, ENB series, HDTP, Kentie's Launcher and GMDX):

GMDX is a must for any new player. It's a excellent, underrated patch that improves the AI and adds an infinite number of bug fixes and balance to the game, basically bringing Deus Ex's gameplay to the modern era.

Just wanted to give an update: I was able to force AA in Chaos Theory. Took some good images. I'd like to do more, but I didn't want to get into the missions too heavily. The new Swat 4 images look amazing. I also took a ton of Morrowind pics that look fucking ridiculous! I'll get those uploaded shortly. I also threw in some Arx Fatalis shots, and I think I am gonna do some Hitman Contracts and Dark Messiah pics as well.
