So Sony is in trouble for misleading gamers in the best country in the world, and the ACCC is coming for them (these guys also knocked Valve down a peg or $3 million lol) so it looks like Sony's has to pay the piper for its bad deeds.

I await the inevitable

to come in here and bring the excuses, should be fun :)

And my question for everyone else is how much should they rightfully take from Sony, I think $10 million sounds fare, what says you?

Good, any shit they can get away with they will.

Limit them as much as possible before next-gen.

But as far as I know Australia is the only one holding these companies accountable, and you didn't answer my question, how much of a fine should they slap Sony with?

If we actually want companies to change for the better, the fines need to actually dent their back-line. Sony produced 12 billion in revenue with their playstation network last year and 800 million profit. They would laugh themselves out of the room at a 10 million dollar fine. Increase that to over 100 million and maybe they would take notice.

Problem is, that fine can't be justified unless the ACCC shows how many people were affected and the cost for that, but it does state from September 2017, so 20 months, and i'm sure that would add up to over 10 million, so yeah 100 mil sounds spot on lol.

This is good news for all psn customers because when they violate the laws of a particular nation, other countries take note and review the law and if it sounds consumer friendly enough - may adapt or change their laws.

3 million AU dollars seems fair. PSN can’t possibly have more customers in AU than Steam.

If we are going by generation standards, than MS still takes the cake for the Xbox One launch. Sony saved us all from those crappy practices MS was trying to implement.

@SolidGame_basic: I think you mean announced because launched indicates the console released with said policies. The whole point of an E3 (trade show) is to take feedback from consumers/press and make necessary changes. They did that.

This. If anything is anti-consumer it was the always online DRM and forcing people to buy a shitty kinect webcam.

@netracing: A $100 million fine doesn’t fit the crime and no court would push for that. They will make a guess at how many consumers were affected and go from there. Misleading digital refund practices probably didn’t do too much in all honesty. It’s super shady on Sony’s part, but this isn’t anything to hang them for.

LOL! We wouldn't even be having this conversation if Xbox was doing 24 hr check ins on games. In fact, you morons would have defended the shit.

Anyway, it's good Australia is doing this, even though it's one of the worst places in the world to buy video games. So there's that.

So you can download a game, play it for fourteen days and then return it? Think Sony should leave the Australian market all together. What a scam!

Ironically, PS4 now requires regular online sign ins, even for downloaded psnow games, which is more draconian than Xboxs always online practices that never happened.

Actually, something like this might be the catalyst for Sony (and hopefully the others) to start offering a proper refund policy.

I think something like this happened with Steam (and it was Australia that sued them I think) and now we can refund games. Not sure if the lawsuit was the reason Steam introduced "refunds", but Australia went after Steam in 2014 and Steam introduced refunds in 2015. (but still lost the lawsuit)

Let's be honest here. Both Nintendo & Microsoft aren't better on that point.

Pretty ridiculous that you can return a game within 14 days.

Wonder how many people manipulate that pro consumer regulation.

I don’t care if it Sony, Nintendo or whoever. I don’t like how Sony basically says I can’t return a game with just over 2 hours of playtime and no trophies. Or the 1 time they do it it’s called a courtesy thing and you can’t do it again.

Yeah **** that. There are measurements you can go to to see I haven’t touched the game or that by the time that 2 hour mark rolled around I couldn’t stand the shitty buggy game.

But 14 days. How these companies get any money from these countries is beyond me. Maybe people are just honest there. Bc here in the US that shit would be taken advantage of like crazy.

Great any company that mislead consumers should pay for it,digital games should have the same warranty as those in physical form.

The most anti consumer company is nintendo. They charge you $400 CAD to play the worst versions of old ports and you can’t even play with your friends in half of the online games.

They never drop prices of their games either.

They force you to buy 10 different controllers.

$100 Cardboard.

The Nintendo tax is real.

The list goes on and on how they are ripping off their fan base but they continue to defend them.

It’s a very abusive relationship for Nintendo fans.

£939.87 (US maybe a little cheaper) for a Switch and 12 of their best games. LOL.

So it's anti-consumer to NOT launch with said anti-consumer policies? How so since they never took affect?

They didn't force anyone to buy an X1 with Kinect. If you didn't want it then you don't buy it and even if you did you didn't HAVE to connect the camera.

I don't you fully understand what anti-consumer actually means

And anyways, MS has been misleading people since day one with all of their products. Talk about company of crooks.

Do people really believe that Sony was not ready to do the exact same thing until they saw the backlash that Microsoft received for it?

A few months prior to E3, Sony patented technology to block the use of used games on a console, so they were obviously thinking about doing the exact same thing. Microsoft's biggest mistake was being stupid enough to be the first one to announce it. I think that after Sony saw the huge backlash that Microsoft received from the announcement, they made a last minute decision to drop it from the PS4 and use the backlash to their advantage to paint themselves as the good guys which was a very smart move on their part but they aren't innocent.

I was going to say something about Nintendo in general, but this counts too I guess. Speaking of this, I am surprised that Epic hasn't sued the socks off of MS for collecting money from people to play Epic's free-to-play game.

There's gotta be a new term for SW hatred of the winning faction of a console race. It was like this with last gen and the 360 pre-kinect and this gen with Sony and the PS4. There is a drive by fanboys on the forums to blindly hate whoever is in the lead and ignore worse offenses by other companies.

From the looks of it they limited refunds to 14 days, and only had in-store credit instead of a refund to original source of funds. Basically, that's against consumer laws in Australia. In other words, Australia has much better pro-consumer laws than most of the world.

S-S-S-Sony is ANTI-CONSUMER!

*Goes back to paying to play Fortnite*

I was going to say something about Nintendo in general, but this counts too I guess. Speaking of this, I am surprised that Epic hasn't sued the socks off of MS for collecting money from people to play Epic's free-to-play game.

There's gotta be a new term for SW hatred of the winning faction of a console race. It was like this with last gen and the 360 pre-kinect and this gen with Sony and the PS4. There is a drive by fanboys on the forums to blindly hate whoever is in the lead and ignore worse offenses by other companies.

That's because MS isn't charging to play Fortnite. They're charging for using MSs online infrastructure which is more than just online gaming and it includes ALL games.

You new here? Cows hate more than any other faction on this board. They hate on PC fanboys, Nintendo fanboys and MS fanboys. They constantly write thread after thread with anything negative about MS not to mention EVERY thread they mention MS even if the thread has nothing to do with them. Dude winning or losing a gen has NOTHING to do with hating the other side.
