With the recent anouncement of Metal Gear Solid: Delta, which is a remake of MGS 3: Snake Eater I can't help but wonder and pause to reflect on the MGS series..

Obviously after V you would remake Metal Gear 1 and 2 (NES games) but OKKKKAAAYYYY!

Don't you think? Seems like a random roll of die to go back to 3.

Your thoughts?

Some games are too old to back to. Rockstar recently remastered GTA 3, Vice CIty and San andreas but they never once re-released enhanced editions of GTA 1 or 2

Besides that the company will look at what they think will be the best return on investment.

I'm not saying I would have picked MGS 3, just saying that's how companies think.

MG1 and MG2 (MSX games), would be a far greater undertaking, really is that simple. Their overall events and some rough scenarios are in place. Otherwise creating whole new games from the ground up. Assuming you don't just mean some HD 2D remakes lol. But yeah if you're talking modern AAA MGS game(s), that's a lot.

Konami likely doesn't have the interest or even the talent to pull that off right now. But sure, given different circumstances, would be the next logical step outside a proper reboot.

MGS3 does seem random, sure. But it does kinda land itself in a sweet spot. Just old enough to noticeably benefit from a facelift, system tweaks, and some QoL. Still modern enough to hit with newer players without needing drastic changes. It really is the path of least resistance. And while it was the lowest selling of the mainline MGS games, it's typically the most well liked. If they truly nail it, could outsell its initial release.

But yeah tl;dr. Easiest possible remake vs hardest possible remakes.

Snake Eater was probably my favorite, but I would think MGS4 would have come first. And for selfish reasons, that’s the one I would want touched up the most. Get it running at 60fps instead of that 20ish it played at on the PS3, and I’d probably finish it.

MGS3 is the first chronologically. It takes place ~30 years before the events in MGS1.

They removed the number from the title.

If they plan on doing the main titles in chronological order then I would expect they skip 5 and do MSG 1 and 2 next.

3 -> 5 -> 1 -> 2 -> 4

Can't wait to see what unbearable lengthy cutscenes look like after they've been through the remaster/remake treatment.

You'd think Konami would be all in on the big remakes like Capcom with RE, but with Kojima gone, do they even have a dedicated coding arm for non-sports games anymore? Virtuos is developing this game. Yes, they should have started from the beginning

Probably because of chronology, but who knows. I think the MGS1 remake is expected (confirmed?) But MG and MG2 come before, so there may be no plans for them, which is a shame.

If it's not clear, OP is talking about remaking these.

@ConanTheStoner:

Yeah but those would require creativity to modernize.

I just don't see Konami doing something like that.

@pyro1245:

Oh for sure, talked about that in a post above.

But yeah, a case of the most challenging vs relatively easy. Among other things.

Only posting the screens as the MG vs MGS stuff often gets confused in these topics.

On that note, where's my Snakes Revenge remake?

😂

Honestly do like that game more than Metal Gear 1, yes even the proper MSX version. MG1 just sucks tbh.

MG2:SS is a legit good game though.

Remember an interview where Kojima didn't even know about Snakes Revenge until another dev told him about it on a train ride lol.

@TheHighWind: bro, msg1 wouldn't be a remake, as much as it would be a brand new game. Imagine doing an 8bit nes game and calling it a remake lol.

As Conan said, remaking MG1 and MG2 would be like making a brand new game from scratch. Like literally make everything new.

At lwast MGS3 already has a 3d environment and mechanics that isn't really too old, hence easier to remake. Heck even MGS1 would be a far easier game to remake than any old MSX games.

@ConanTheStoner:

So do you think they will keep orignal MGS3 style gameplay, or do you think we will see literally MGS5 in the jungle? sprint, TPS, move while aiming, quick switch to FPS, etc.

Or some hybrid system? (I don't even know what that would be)

I think the MGS 1 remake might have shifted to being a MGS 3 remake instead, but who knows, I'm not saying no to it.

Yeah, could be the case. Modern MGS3 with QoL improvements could be amazing... Assuming Konami don't shit the bed.

@TheHighWind:

Snake Eater is basically where the original story starts and that counts for everything BEFORE the NES titles. So no, this is far from randomly selected. It looks more like an investment of what could be a great revival of the series we remember.

Eh, it's the furthest back in the timeline, yes. The story really doesn't flow well with MGS3 as the start, more awkward than anything.

It's specifically written and presented in a way to complement the previous games. Give you "aha" moments, fan service it up with details on events, characters, relationships, and organizations. Stuff that was previously vague, or built up to be mythical, now detailed and more grounded. A lot of the beats are just fine on their own, but there is a hefty amount that hinges on prior knowledge.

It's not just that MGS3 doesn't land the same as an intro to the story. Starting there has a chain reaction on how aspects of the other games land as well.

Chronological order certainly isn't the ideal choice here lol. MGS3 just happens to be the easiest route to a successful remake for a variety of reasons.

MGS3 is a good starting point, as that's chronogically the first game. Then from there, they can skip MGS5 and go to remakes of Metal Gear 1 and 2 (MSX). Remakes of those 8-bit games are long overdue. Everything in MGS3 and MGS5 was building up to MG 1&2, where we finally get to see the showdown between Solid Snake vs Big Boss. That's something I'd love to see with the full 3D AAA treatment...

But I don't trust Konami to pull it off... That's something they should outsource to Kojima Productions.

MG1 and 2 on MSX need to be retold on modern hardware. They are overlooked but amazing games considering when they released. I still love playing through both of them.
