Yeah, although I think that was really a fair review. Mario Kart 64 was not that great.

Won't get a 9 so an 8 possibly.

It added 4 player split screen, so that was enough for most people to love it more than the 2 player SNES game.

It also added new characters, some great tracks and new power ups.

I've had a lot of fun with it, definitely deserved more than a 6.4. I still think that was GS being funny.

Agreed. They also gave Diddy Kong Racing a 6. A four player, cars/boats/planes, tons of tracks, and even a goddam single player campaign racer got a 6... madness :P

Gamespot was not in the mood for kart racers back then, that's for sure.

Shame DKR never got a sequel. Would love to see a modern one with karts, boats and planes. Sure, modern MK come close (air parts, underwater parts) but it's not exactly the same.

I think the reason we're never going to get another one is because of Mario Kart's popularity now. It's established itself as Nintendo's racing franchise. I wonder if this might also have something to do with F-Zero struggling to sell with GX and getting a sequel, although the two franchises are of two different sub-genres.

Oh yes, that's another thing. I really miss F-Zero. The F-Zero GX was amazing, one of my favourite racing games of all time.

Sure, current Mario Karts may include the air and sea segments of DKR or MK8 the level design from a F-Zero game, but that doesn't make it the same. And I still miss them.

With F-Zero apparently gone and the creator of Wipeout closed down... where are we going to get our lightning fast speed fix :(

There's hope. Gran Turismo and Forza sell fine, so there's no reason an even faster racer can't sell too. We might at least see one on the 3DS.

Game looks absolutely stunning.

Seems like instead of doing an F zero or another diddy kong racer they are just incorporating those elements into Mario Kart. This is either brilliant or lazy.

It's keeping the franchise fresh that's for sure.

Though that doesn't excuse Nintendo from making another F-Zero. Or hell, they can remake F-Zero GX in 1080p for all I care.

I'm tempted to hype it AAA now even though I originally said GameSpot was going to write a shock review for it and slap it with a seven.

I'm leaning towards brilliant. I'd buy a new F Zero day 1 but since that isn't happening why not throw that crazy shit into Mario Kart and spice it up? I'm possibly getting over hyped but this seems like Ultimate Mario Kart + HD prettiness + F Zero wackiness. Can't really go wrong with that :P

I'll take the safe option and say it will get a AA on Gamespot. Personally, it looks like a AAA to me.

I wish they would throw in at least ONE f-zero track into this game. That would be too fun.

I can easily see this getting a 9... I haven't heard anything bad about the game what so ever so I would be really surprised if it scored less than a 9.

This game's hype seems excessively overblown right now. This is going to come crashing down... What exactly does this game have that would merit a 9? It's going to be fun no doubt, but I just cannot see it. Especially with the staff at Gamespot (as random as they tend to be).
