Ocarina of Time: 99 Majora's Mask: 95 Windwaker: 96 Twilight Princess: 95 Skyward Sword: 93 With Zelda U coming out in the next few years, Nintendo is bound to create another Masterpiece. Will The Legend of Zelda continue to deliver on all aspects or will Nintendo drop the ball with this one?

Wouldn't call a game a masterpiece based off of metacritc score(not saying Zelda isn't good). If that were the case Halo 4 wouldn't be an abomination.

Brand/Nostalgia scores. If critics weren't so inconsistent when it came to the concept of rehashing, everything after MM would not be rated so highly.

GD1551
Sure the basic concept to a Zelda game doesn't change but each new game in the series does enough to separate itself from the rest and make it feel like a unique and fresh experience. Brand/Nostalgia can be used to contradict any score given to a new game in a series.

Halo 4 is awful.

Easily the worst game I played last year, and I'm including several IOS games. It's easily the most disgraceful sequel I've ever played, that throws out the core foundation of what it was built upon.

How can you judge taste objectively?

He could consider Big Rigs or Faces of Evil his top game and you still cound't judge his taste "objectively"...

(btw, you hating on WW & SS makes me think you do have a prejudice against good games...)

Flaws??? That game was near perfect. Everything about it was fantastic. Long side quest, good dungeons, excellent boss battles, introduced picking up enemies weapons and using them, roll and counter attacks, HUGE world, lots of exploration and secrets. You are crazy to think this was a bad game,

Man, as soon as I say they aren't masterpieces, people assume I mean they're awful. They're both very good games. But you can't stack up Wind Waker's dungeon design next to, say Twilight Princess', for instance. They're not perfect, and if any Zelda game would heavily benefit from a remake that actually changes the design, it's WInd Waker.

But what about art that is "above criticism" ? ;)

Game design judgement is prone to subjectivity, period.

Of course you can point out some "design flaws" and such, but what is a flaw in one man's eyes is a good thing in another one's.

There simply is no "universal standard" by which games would be rated other than "let's compare this to what already exists" or "do I have fun with it".

Nah wind Waker probably did have the weakest dungeons in the series. I don't think any of them were bad, just not as good as some other duneons in other Zelda games.

Best story? One of the best I'd agree, although I'd give the absolute best to Majora's Mask

Art design and music? Maybe, I dunno.

[QUOTE="spike6958"][QUOTE="DarkLink77"] If you can enjoy lame dungeons and and even lamer fetch quest, more power to you. I can't because I actually have standards for Zelda games.DJ-Lafleur

The dungeons where better than any of the other Zelda games, and sure collecting the tri-force can be tedious, but hardly enough to ruin the game. It also has the best story, art designe and music of any game in the series. Certainly better than the over-hype Ocarina, which IMO is the worst game in the series.

I agree with this man. Finally, someone with sense.

Yup, and only masterpieces win Game of the Year. That's why you never see any PC games take home the prize; they're too busy being ****ty and not fun.

[QUOTE="DarkLink77"] Um.. yes there is. You can judge game design on an objective standard, same way you can writing or art. You just have to separate what you like from what is good on its own merits.DarkLink77

That is a really terrible series of excuses made by people who don't understand how to objectively critique something.

And who exactly has the authority to critique objectively?

Those who played a lot of games?

That alone doesn't make them good reviewers per-se and they are still prone to subjectivity and personal opinions.

[QUOTE="DarkLink77"] They're not masterpieces by any objective standard of measurement. Good games? Sure. Masterpieces? Come on now.DarkLink77

Well, I haven't played Wind Waker in over 10 years, so I couldn't give you my opinion on it without it being muddled, but Skyward Sword was damn good.

Damn good.

And, just for future reference, that is coming from someone who doesn't enjoy the Zelda games very much.

No, no.

I know what you're referring to, but people seem to always assume the dungeon design was best in games like Ocarina, even though it's puzzles were matched and beaten in later games (and, personally, the best dungeon design was Majora's Mask, but it went a little far on occasion).

And, honestly, I thought you hated Twilight. I could have sworn you said that at some point in the past, but I probably just misread a quote.

not really. for example, you hold wind waker's mediocre dungeons to much higher ground than i do. i found them to be just a small part of the game, one that i really don't care about for better or for worse, because they weren't the reason i was playing the game to begin with. you hold the triforce quest as "objectively bad", which it isn't. you see, i see the triforce hunt as the perfect excuse to sail everywhere, charting new lands and uncovering secrets, which is the reason i love wind waker so much. so while you see it as dragging and padding, i see it as the apex of the game's concept, which is the sailing. games can not be judged objectively.

WW is my favorite Zelda. It is the Zelda game that tried to be different. It wasn't OoT again. Now all Zelda games feel like OoT rehashed. Still love the series though.
