i wonder what MSs thinking was with the design of the x1. i mean the X1 and wiiu have a pretty similar memory setup (using DDR connected to a main chip with 32MB of EDram) so was this a package that was proposed to them by AMDs GPU division to keep costs down (both console also came with an expensive controller)? the 360 also kinda has a similar setup but they still used GDDr for their main memory to keep memory bandwidth as high as possible. they must have known that the X1 setup was going to be a problem.
well anyway lessons clearly learned. i do rag on both mid gen refreshes as i think both shouldn't exist. but taken in isolation the X1X clearly shows that lessons have been learned. the approach for the PS4 and X1X are how consoles should be made today.
as DF mention though its not going away as its going to be used for their streaming service (which makes sense. lower power draw, cooler and so on). so i dont see them making a build of games for the streaming service and not bothering to release it for the X1/X1s.
their speculation on changing it a bit is interesting though. could they replace the current memory setup with GDDR5 and map the ED ram to that (like they have with the X1X?). if they do that could they also replace the edram with more streaming processors to give it a bit of an extra kick.
