https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/gears-six-is-reportedly-the-coalitions-next-game/

The Coalition has reportedly shifted its full attention to the next entry in the Gears of War series after two other games in development at the studio were cancelled.

During his Game Mess Mornings show on Thursday, Giant Bomb reporter Jeff Grubb claimedXbox‘s Canadian studio was now ‘full steam ahead’ on Gears 6.

The Coalition said in May 2021 that it was preparing to transition to next-gen development using Unreal Engine 5, and shortly after, the LinkedIn profile of one of the studio’s level designers claimed they had been working on a “new IP”.

Grubb claimed The Coalition was at one point working on two now-cancelled projects, in addition to carrying out support work on Halo Infinite and working with Epic on The Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 tech demo.

“They have cancelled that smaller project, as well as another project, so there have been two games cancelled there,” he said.

“This was all reflected in the layoffs that happened at Microsoft, which did hit The Coalition a little bit. The studio is now going to move on fully to Gears 6. I say now, it has likely moved on to Gears 6 in full over the course of the last year, but definitely, that will be their next game.”

According to Microsoft, Gears of War had sold over 22 million units and grossed over $1 billion dollars when the company acquired the franchise from Epic Games in 2014.

Since buying the IP, Xbox has released two mainline series entries in the form of 2016’s Gears of War 4 and 2019’s Gears 5, both of which were developed by The Coalition, as well as Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and the turn-based tactics spin-off Gears Tactics.

The franchise's former lead designer thinks the Fortnite maker also needed the money at the time

Netflix recently announced that it had partnered with The Coalition to release a number of Gears of War projects including a live action film.

It said the movie would be followed by a Gears of War adult animated series and possibly further projects.

The news was announced in November to coincide with the 16th anniversary of the Gears of War franchise’s launch.

Ouch… Microsoft is a $2 trillion company, why are they canceling projects?? We need games for GamePass!!

The last Gear game left a cliffhanger and not to mention an important decision left by the player which choice is going to he canon for Gears 6. Gears 6 is supposed to be the final Gears of this new trilogy.

I already knew Coalition were working on something new but hearing MS want them to do Gears 6 is depressing.

So they can't cancel projects because they are a 2 trillion dollar company?🤣🤡

I would be more interested in a non-Gears game. Unless they change the formula, MEH!

Unfortunate about those two other projects, kind of curious what they were. Very much looking forward to Gears 6 though as I really enjoyed the last one and want to see how things carry on from that one.

Its insane how all MS studios (other than the ones in charge of both forza titles) are a clusterfuck. And look at the new Gears. It will come out, feel like a game from 2006, and literally 98% of the playerbase will leave within 4-7 days.

That is a weird conclusion when they have released two unique games over the past three months.

So given how well Hi-Fi Rush and I'm assuming Pentiment were received, you'd think they'd let those projects exist instead of focusing on yet another Gears game.

Let them do something else instead of gutting the team and making them work on aging IPs.

If they are open to the two games you have listed then one can argue that the games they cancelled weren't up to snuff.

As I have stated before, "I would be more interested in a non-Gears game. Unless they change the formula, MEH!"

They laid off staff though. I don't think it had to do with the games and more to do with them getting rid of people who could work on it.

If they cancelled the game for short term saving then that was a shortsighted move. If it they cancelled because the games weren't viable, then it is understandable. Both scenarios are still a loss for the folks who lost their jobs.

Their last public commitment written about was a year ago that they were working with Undead Labs on State of Decay 3.

I would assume given Coalition's greater familiarity with Unreal Engine that they were helping Undead Labs get a handle on using UE5, as well as keep the project on track, not to mention gain greater familiarity with the engine in the meantime.

They've created tech demos too about their use of EU5 in that time too. I would imagine in this time they are flexing their creative skills to get ready for a more ambitious project. UE5 itself seems rather unfinished but Epic had been making improvements to the tools with major improvements to performance. I can see maybe why some projects are still on hold as a result.

If they're no longer attached to helping on State of Decay 3 then hopefully that means Undead Labs can take it from there and Coalition can go back to working on Gears of War, which is likely the only IP they're going to be focused on. Which is why I am not to disappointed about hearing of someone drawing conclusions from extrapolating off minor details that they canceled a new IP that frankly nobody would ever expect of them.

Hopefully this also means in coming months we'll finally have an update about the progress of State of Decay 3 if they are indeed full steam ahead on Gears 6 now.

If Coalition is providing support to other Microsoft studios then I can see why maybe their workers might say on their LinkedIn that they're working on a new IP. If anything the only thing that would surprise me is we haven't heard much of a new Gears game since Gears 5, so yeah, again not torn up at all they're focusing on Gears 6 and not a new IP.

Gears 5 sold and reviewed well. Them wanting the next game of a popular series out ASAP in favor of taking risks with other shit makes sense. Boring, and the reason why I never play MS's games, but makes sense.

Exactly. Projects get cancelled all the time. If they're not working out, they're not working out.

What is the point in investing in games that won't turn out well.

Gears 5 was my favourite so yea I'll take another offering in the series.

Cows getting mad over a game that scores well on a device they don't own... probably because it will look better than anything Sony has to offer, you can picture those unreal engine 5 glorious graphics can't you.

Why can't MS just let Halo and Gears die? I mean do they consider those franchises like Windows which people will get whether they like it or not because of backcompat?

Because both Mario and Zelda are household names that are as relevant in 2023 as they were when they first released. Not to mention both of these IPs have evolved over the period of time with consistent quality. Halo and Gears on the other hand...well...

Gears is one of the worst AAA shooting franchises I can think about off the top of my head. Not entirely sure why anybody would like the cover based campathon that makes up the multilayer, so I'm guessing it's the campaigns? Different strokes for different folks and all that, but I guess I don't get it. It feels generic, clunky, and forced to me... but perhaps they are going for that and that's what I don't get... I dunno.

@SolidGame_basic: "Ouch… Microsoft is a $2 trillion company, why are they canceling projects?? We need games for GamePass!!"

The amount of money Microsoft has is irrelevant to the cancelling of a game. Just because you can afford to pay off a project, that doesn't mean that you should. If they cancelled the games, I would imagine that it's because the publisher didn't see the game as viable. I'm not saying that they shouldn't allow their studios to come up with new IP, but if something is a dud, it's a dud. Don't forget that games that get cancelled are still games that the publisher put investment in.
