I was excited about X-Com but it turned out to be pretty shallow... probably gonna pass this one.... especially considering they are going back in time not foward with the story.... just for the "giggles"

That looks pretty unique and interesting, it really is like a real time X-Com, definitely gonna pick this up at some point.

I saw some gameplay at IGN today. It reminded me of a boring version of GEOW combined with a boring version of Brothers in Arms.

I'm probably to quick to judge this game but  I can say the same thing for all the people that called how the game originally looked 'another shooter'. It had some interesting things going for it.

The abstract aliens had an interesting design and was something we don't often see in video games. Nope scratch that, let's go back to the old and tired alien design.

The investigating was something that looked interesting. The game had this whole mysterious vibe to it. Again, scratched and instead replaced with generic sit-behind-a-wall-and-shoot gameplay.

To be fair that turn based Xcom that came out this year had them too. So it could be an alien design that's inherent to this franchise. But when I saw them I was thinking Destroy All Humans! too :P

Those abstract aliens they showed in the 2010 trailer of Xcom (back when it was an FPS) looked way more interesting and threatening.

I was interested in it back in it's 2010 incarnation but I'm even more interested now. The stronger focus on the tactical elements shows that they're trying to keep the XCOM feel while still trying to do something new with the IP. That, and we could use more tactical shooters, haven't really seen much of those this gen.

Was this originally the XCOM game that was supposed to be some kind of FPS? If so it looks like it changed to a TPS. I hope it turns out good, they're working with a respected license.

It doesn't look quite AAA to me but I'm sure it's gonna be a fun AA title (7.5 at worst) which I'm definetly going to get since I'm sucker for beatnik 50s, XCOM and aliens in general.

That's why I'm so interested and by the way, I'm glad it didn't eventually become some multiplayer garbage bin shooter on XBLA/PSN...I'd have preferred that BioShocky FPS if it had its grandeur, but I guess its development went to hell so I'm glad with what we have, especially when there's too many FPS games around.

the funny part is that right before the dude said the game had smart AI companions the gameplay showed carter giving them an order to move to cover and one of the ai characters jumped over the cover into the line of fire for a few seconds and then jumped back over into the right spot

especially in one where your AI partners permanently die. I would be so pissed if one of my dude's died because of bad AI :?

Day 1

I was never excited about the proposed XCOM FPS and was iffy about buying it just to support the XCOM franchise. This on the other hand looks great!!!! I see some of you making comparisons to other games. Being a cow I've never played GeoW and was so disgusted by ME2 that I never bought ME3. I think the gameplay looked exciting and am eager to experience squad based combat in a closer perspective.

XCOM has always been about consequences and hard choices. I'm excited about perma-death and hope they include an Ironman mode. I'll do whatever I can with my wallet to ensure there will be a next gen sequel to XCOM: EU.

Hopefully these AI issues will be ironed out by the time of release.

The way I figure it with pre-generated maps the AI should know the best route to take for each map.

I'm kind of lost on why some of you consider that a bad thing.

The "Greys" have been embedded into the North American subconscious for decades. It would only make sense that they were real in the world of XCOM.

Interestingly enough the perception of aliens are different in other parts of the world. For instance in Europe they are usually reported as being reptilian.

Im guessing its like the XCom game from last year. Your squad mates level up and get their own skills and if they die in battle they're gone for good.

I never said it was a bad thing. I said they look cliche (which they do) and that the abstract aliens looked more interesting and threatening (which they did).

That is interesting indeed. What I find interesting about most alien designs in drawings, movies, etc... is how human-like they are. They all have two legs, two feet, two arms, two hands, ..., a head, though the head and eyes are usually bigger. If you take that away you basically got a human.

While if we take the theory of evolution in mind there is no way an alien race could be so human like. No way did the exact same circumstances happen on another planet for aliens to evolve in something so close to humans. Well that's my theory anyway. There are many other (perhaps more) interesting theories. :)
