Shadows of the Damned, Alice, and Left 4 Dead aren't really horror games. jg4xchampThis. Generation has been pretty dry on big name horror titles on Consoles. PC has a few gems but even then it's slim pickings, I blame the casualization of two of the biggest names in Survival Horror. Resident Evil and Silent Hill went in the totally wrong direction, at least Silent Hill is trying (Floundering) to be known as a good horror game because it's action oriented games never took off. Resident Evil is hopeless as long as people keep calling RE4 the "Perfect game" Capcom wont stop thinking that RE5 did just as good a job.
Dead Space has a great atmosphere but most of the horror elements comes from the cheap jump scares and half way through the game it gets predictible not to mention...wait...wait a damn minute...what the F...is Alice Madness Returns doing there!?

RE4s excellence is not the reason Resident Evil stopped being a satisfying horror game. Albeit sure Capcom did try really hard to make the cliff notes version of RE 4. Besides Condemned: Criminal Origins and Siren were quite good as horror experiences. Why we never got Fatal Frame 4 is another thing entirely. Silent Hill's downfall is depressing though.
Condemned 2. Only game to ever scare me.
Best scene in a game. Period.

I thought it was pretty solid up until the last level, I think that bear attack in the cabin and schizophrenia episode in the police station were in the second half which make up for it.
Still one of my favorite games gen despite the ending and multiplayer being crap.
looked it up, last 2 levels suck.
GS said they were horror games. And that's how I ended up with this list because to be honest, my list was shorter, because horror games this gen were pretty much non-existant. So Using GS, i was able to make a bigger list.Dead Space has a great atmosphere but most of the horror elements comes from the cheap jump scares and half way through the game it gets predictible not to mention...wait...wait a damn minute...what the F...is Alice Madness Returns doing there!?

I liked the original more. I'm with Yahtzee on that last part of the game being borderline perfect from a setting and set up standpoint. It's just the minute they brought in super saiyan gohan up in there I was like "yep, suddenly don't care"[QUOTE="Jynxzor"][QUOTE="jg4xchamp"]Shadows of the Damned, Alice, and Left 4 Dead aren't really horror games. jg4xchampThis. I say its one of the reasons. They saw people rather would have a high action focused game. Thus RE5 was the next step to that and from what I can remember that sold well.

And yet the only real thing RE 4 is missing that the other games had was limitations on resources. That's not scary. :?Condemned 2. Only game to ever scare me.

fuk isn't Silent Hill downpour up there? Downpour is the ONLY TRUE survival horror game to come out this gen, concerning consoles, IMO. Can't miss it! soapandbubblesToo bad it's just not that great of a game. It did decent in the atmosphere, but the half ass combat really ruins it.

Pfft, you kidding me. That part nearly gave me a heart attack. Of course it's not scary when you're watching a f*cking youtube video of it.

Besides, combat isn't how it's played. The story and puzzles/atmosphere is truly awesome. this isn't an action game, lol.

No, that part wasn't scary not even while playing, you are just a big sissy if you actually got scared with that. condemned 1...the part when you had to take a picture to the "dead" man, that was scary.I wouldn't consider L4D a horror game. It's an extremely fun multiplayer game though. Fun times I had with L4D.

basically this.Youtube takes alot away from it; scared the hell out of me when I played it though. Same with the viewers.
Trust me. Try this game. It's gotta be like 10 dollars max to pick up now.

Oh...but it was. RE4 was praised for the action far more than it was for the atmosphere. While atmosphere was what made it a "Amazing" game it got totally ignored by the general consumer who laddled praise on the third person shooter and roundhouse kicks.
RE5 was the natural progression of what RE4 did. Cut out horror add action in it's place, Chris's gunshow and rock punching is paramount to the RE4 experience at the cost of atmosphere. Game still sold amazing, my dreams were still crushed. RE6 continues the tradition.
So where is Siren on PS3?TheGuardian03
I was wondering the exact same thing, that game is terrifying.
Also, why hasn't anyone mentioned Theresia, Calling, Limbo or even Jericho (Seriously, some of the creatures are insanely grotesque)?
I don't think I have played any other games this gen that I found scary. I can't really decide on which is the scarriest since they all have their moments.
The best horror game this gen is Penumbra Black Plague... its on the PC. I don't see the point of ignoring it.

and atmosphere.
In what ways is Resident Evil 4 lacking in atmosphere? The Condemned games can be damn scary and the Dead Space games are full of jump scares (cheap but effective), though nothing beats Amnesia which sadly has not come to consoles as of yet. A shame since it would make a fantastic downloadable title, but since I still haven't beaten it yet I doubt a console version would give me the courage to do so.

I'd rather blame it on Capcom being stupid, and never leaving Resident Evil n the right hands(IE Mikami who did RE 1 and 4, or Kamiya who did RE2). But fair point. RE 5 is a game that didn't really understand what made RE 4 so good in the first place. Have you tried Revelations? I want to give it a try. Allegedly "ITS OLD SCHOOL HORROR" for the people who love the old games with RE 4 styIe gameplay. I want to play it, but handheld...Please Log In to post.
