Tenchu: Stealth Assassins Creator Wants to Make a New Game for PS5 (Sorry MS, no one wants makes games for ya)

Tenchu: Stealth Assassins creator and president of Acquire, Takuma Endo has said that he would like to create a new Tenchu game for the PlayStation 5 - but nothing is formally in the works right now.In an interview with Weekly Famitsu (translated by Gematsu), Takuma Endo said that he would like to "create a new Tenchu from the ground up for the PlayStation 5 generation if the possibility arises", but also acknowledges that it's currently difficult.

That difficulty likely stems from the fact that the Tenchu IP is currently owned by FromSoftware, who released Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in 2019. In the early stages, Sekiro was being developed as a Tenchu successor, but From Software eventually decided to take the development in a different direction. It's not clear if the developer has any plans for the Tenchu franchise at this point.

Back in August of last year, Acquire registered a trademark for "Stealth Assassins" in Japan which set the rumour mill off that a remake or spiritual successor was in the works. In the same interview with Famitsu, Endo mentions that this was merely a formality, as the trademark had expired.

Elsewhere, Endo mentioned that Acquire plans to launch an "indies brand" separate from its main output, with the first title coming "by the end of 2021". Here's our review of Sekiro from 2019, which we scored a 9.5, lauding its "focused stealth-action take on t he FromSoftware formula".

Back in 1998, we awarded Tenchu: Stealth Assassins a 9/10 review, calling it "the quintessential PlayStation game. Hard-core, smart, bloody, and fun as hell."

PS5 is doing so well, that game devs just want to make games for it. Maybe one day a game dev will beg MS to make games for them.

Yeah, Tenchu was always level based, kinda open linear design, strong focus on stealth with action being last ditch. Kinda like Splinter Cell, where if you've gone the action route, you've probably fucked up. (bosses aside in Tenchu)

And was definitely on some fantasy Ninja shit, crazy abilities, foes like zombies, demons, ninja bears, etc.

Granted I don't think I've played a Tenchu since the PS2 days, maybe changed since then.

Anyways, all that said would be dope af to have a ninja stealth game like that again... just, needs to be much better. Tenchu was one of those games I always liked, even if I recognized it was super jank. Wouldn't play that shit these days tho.

I'd be up for that if they added in a mission editor like in the second on PS1.

Why the hell did so many series stop letting users create levels of their own? Fantastic mechanic in quite a few games back in the day.

Even if this gets off the ground, doesn't look like it's coming any time soon. Three years, minimum.

It's a good time to revive Tenchu, now that the feudal Japan setting has seen a resurgence lately, e.g. Nioh, Sekiro, Tsushima, etc. From Software could probably just use the Sekiro engine to create Tenchu.

Sony does have its own stealth series called Shinobido lying around and might I add, a much better ninja game. First game on PS2 is really damn good ninja time with multiple warring factions, robot ninja, all female ninja and pretty decent open spaces to do your ninja activities.
