@Maroxad: I might have to check this genre out.
Any recommendations you have, let me have 'em! 😀
Going to buy Tactics Ogre right now. I'm on PC btw, not sure how many of these are on PC.
Most of them are sadly on console. There is also Triangle Strategy and Symphony of War: Nephilim saga on PC. Otherwise the genre has stayed pretty much exclusively on console. This is why I want this game to succeed. So hopefully more stuff get put out. There is also Valkyria Chronicles on PC.
As for this game, there is FFT, FFTA, Ogre Battle, Shining Force and Fire Emblem which are also good. Avoid Disgaea.
Ogre Battle is unique where you command an army as opposed to a squad. Battles are automated though with you giving some orders at the start. The game is more about strategy than tactics, so naming this tactics ogre was really apt.
FFTA has an interesting spin where you play the of the traditional FF villain and see everything through their perspective.
Modern Fire Emblem (Awakening and above) tend to have cringe writing, but they used to be much better in the past. Echoes was solidly written throughout, and three houses had really good world building and characterization (just a bad plot). Where these games shine is in gameplay, especially conquest which has the best gameplay I have seen in an SRPG.
I loved the grounded political nature of Triangle Strategy. No magic swords or any of that nonsense. There is magic, but if they got rid of the mages, they could easily have made the game a historical fiction if they so wished.
Valkyria Chronicles is another good choice, but the games arent grid based but rather you move pieces as you would in an action game. make your shot, and that unit's turn is spent. Beware of interception fire though. The first one is the best one, but 4 is fine as well. Just skip the dialogue if you play 4.
