Super excited for this! For those of you who don’t know, this is a remaster of one of the best tactics games ever! Never played the original personally, so I’m looking forward to this on Day 1. How about you, SW? Will you be checking out Tactics Ogre Reborn?

I’ll pick it up early next year most likely. Just bought Ragnarok and I have some other games to finish first.

But I’m super happy it seems to be a great remake and I’m looking forward to playing it.

Preordered, but no option to preload.

Why Square Enix? The one part where pre-order bonuses make sense.

Edit: A 87 on switch. One review on PC which is a 90.

Did anyone play the gameboy advance version? Pretty sure it was one of the highest rated games on the system.

Nope. Comes out tommorow.

It is not a port, but its visuals are heavily based on the PSP version.

Will get, but "Redone visuals are uneven" yeah no kidding lol. Sprites look like they have one of those crappy smoothing filters you get with some emulators.

Not a major concern by any stretch, just odd. Especially given how slick those "HD-2D" games have looked from SE.

@SolidGame_basic:

I'll play just about any genre, only ones I outright avoid are MMOs and MOBAs.

Can always appreciate a well designed game.

Not big into strategy games, but probably like 2 or 3 times a year I'll dip into some. Honestly think it's one of the best genres. I value depth in games and strategy games can be among the deepest. And there's so much variety within its various sub genres. I just also happen to prefer real time action, so that knocks them down a few notches for my personal taste lol.

As someone that has not played anything like this, what is it like?

I recall someone saying it's sort of like XCOM? Like turn-based tactics with units. Is that accurate?

Correct. Playing through the game right now, could add you on discord if you wanna see gameplay.

You can create your own guys, semilinear story with branching paths, handcrafted missions, permadeath, everyone can individually level and you can indivdiually assign skills, spells and weapons to them.

As additional personalization, you can name your own faction. I named mine Antifa, due to how some people probably see me :P

Most of us our anti-fascists when you get right down to it 😀 Usually just lower-case antifa, though, not upper case ANTIFA

I just went with the law route. I am clearly not :P

Law has a better story than Chaos (hence I picked it). Even if the protagonist is utterly despicable for a good chunk of it. But I guess the morally questionable protagonist is part of the charm.

I honestly wonder what you would think of Simulation RPGs or japanese SRPGs as they are called here.

Grid based movement, you commanding several units.

As you can see from this image, pretty similar to XCOM in many ways. My Hawkman is about to lay down the axe on a poor mage. Unfortunately he kinda sucks atm, which is why his damage is low. He is also more of a support unit than a dedicated attacker. With his role being to buff beasts and distribute consumable items. (The game has over 50 classes).

I'm diggin it so far. At Lake Bordu. Would be a bit further, but twice now I've had these last second permadeaths on that stage. Should probably just accept a loss, especially this early game, but stubborn lol. Or just use the Chariot system to rewind. Though also abit dumb to not just have a number of units carry a blessing stone.

Think my biggest early game screwup was going ham on recruitment out the gate. Burned coin on units I just ended up dismissing with little to no use.

Still getting my bearings, still early game, still a million little things I don't know lol. Can't really say. I'm a noob.

Though safe to assume yeah, probably so. Lots of room for how interesting decision making can unfold. Having at least played FFT years back, easy to assume this game will go even further in that.

Currently tho, pretty straight forward. Scout the field, prep the loadout accordingly, smooth sailing.

Welp, just learned that you can accidentally hurt your teammates LOL. Took your advice and not recruiting right now lol. The card thing adds an interesting gameplay element.

Even if this game isn't Ivalice, glad the same vibes come across. The art, music, writing, story, etc. even the VA. Just a whole other level above SEs usual, especially their more modern stuff. Don't have to eye roll every 5 minutes from the plot and dialogue.

Matsuno da man. Makes me want to replay FFXII.

Kinda funny playing out a GoT style plot with chibi characters.

Going to buy Tactics Ogre right now. I'm on PC btw, not sure how many of these are on PC.

Most of them are sadly on console. There is also Triangle Strategy and Symphony of War: Nephilim saga on PC. Otherwise the genre has stayed pretty much exclusively on console. This is why I want this game to succeed. So hopefully more stuff get put out. There is also Valkyria Chronicles on PC.

As for this game, there is FFT, FFTA, Ogre Battle, Shining Force and Fire Emblem which are also good. Avoid Disgaea.

Ogre Battle is unique where you command an army as opposed to a squad. Battles are automated though with you giving some orders at the start. The game is more about strategy than tactics, so naming this tactics ogre was really apt.

FFTA has an interesting spin where you play the of the traditional FF villain and see everything through their perspective.

Modern Fire Emblem (Awakening and above) tend to have cringe writing, but they used to be much better in the past. Echoes was solidly written throughout, and three houses had really good world building and characterization (just a bad plot). Where these games shine is in gameplay, especially conquest which has the best gameplay I have seen in an SRPG.

I loved the grounded political nature of Triangle Strategy. No magic swords or any of that nonsense. There is magic, but if they got rid of the mages, they could easily have made the game a historical fiction if they so wished.

Valkyria Chronicles is another good choice, but the games arent grid based but rather you move pieces as you would in an action game. make your shot, and that unit's turn is spent. Beware of interception fire though. The first one is the best one, but 4 is fine as well. Just skip the dialogue if you play 4.

Yeah, the former Quest devs is the best part of SE. They are also the ones behind FF14 (and probably 16 as well).

Edit: It might be late now, but since you picked the Law route, make SURE you read the Warren Report or you will regret it. You will unlock extra battles this way which are necessary to unlock a certain character.

Oh sick, thanks! Will do now, just wrapped up the Rhea Boum Aqueduct.

Earlier was gonna ask how tf to unlock finishers, but finally started getting a few.

I really enjoyed the card battle system from Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen. Never played the sequels. Maybe I should pick it up.

Just in time then :) That battle is the last one before the event closes off.

In particular, the talk section. Has the thing that opens up the battle to recruit Dame Ravness

The reason this one is particularly painful is because if you mess up and you want to recruit her later on, you will have to repeat the entirety of Law Chapter 2 and parts of Chapter 3. Unless they made huge changes to the NG+ feature.

Here is a link to the wiki if you want to make sure not to make any mistakes.
