@clyde46: Yup :P All I can say is, if you can, get a testdrive on all the cars you're interested. At the very least you'll get a better idea of how they should perform on the road. Other than that, the rest is up to you and your personal taste.
Well, I can tell you what I thought of the BMW 118d that I test drove the other day. For a car that costs north of £25K the pedal box is tiny which meant I didn't feel in control. I hated the indicators and the gear stick shook for some reason. Hell if my 12 year old Ford with 86K miles on the clock doesn't shake the gear stick, why the **** are BMW allowed to get away with that. The brakes also felt unresponsive as well, I had to really stamp on the pedal to get anything out of them which nearly caused me to get up close and personal with a hedge.
That said, the car was quiet with miniumal road and wind noise. It had lots of go, even in 6th car I could just plant my foot on the loud pedal and it would just go and go and go some more. The seats were lovely to sit in, the dash is well laid out and the steering was responsive. The ride was a bit soft for my liking but I didn't miss the clunks that my Ford makes when it goes over the potholes.
Comparing it to the Merc, the interiror was nicer, the buttons felt more robust where as the Merc felt a little cheap the futher down the car you go. The softer ride is in large contrast to the hard ride that the Merc has but I like the stiffness of the Merc, the BMW felt a little wallow'y.
I hated the auto box in the Merc as it was slow and indecisive but I hated the manual in the BMW so I'm going to ask for a manual Merc to test drive and I'm down to test drive a auto box BMW.
