And Nintendo lowered projection from shipment of 20m for full cycle to only 17m due to lower expected Q3 sales. Nintendo sold 9.41m Switch from October - December. Best switch Q3 but is not what Nintendo expected.

Can't even hit 20m target shipment, Nintendo is doomed as usual.

From what I see Switch has room to move down in price and I believe we are expecting a core Pokemon title this year, wouldn't be surprised if by this point the Switch's price point is hurting it, if a core Pokemon title does come in 2019 I'd expect aggressive discounting in time for holiday 2019.

Smash on 12 million already? Holy crap! And Pokemon Let's Go at 10 million too. That's not bad for a spin-off title/remake on a console with a 32 million install base.

Looking forward to the Gen 8 game this year. :)

@mandzilla: 12 million+ in just 3 weeks is incredible for an exclusive, or any game for that matter.

@Jag85: Indeed. Brawl's sold about 13m or so since its release, so Ultimate is about to pass that.

Ah great, one of the concern trolls got to make the thread...

What isn't mentioned is that the software projection was actually increased by 10 million, and that the profit projection was not reduced. So much everything is fine, 20 million was just too ambitious.

Impressive numbers considering the Switch is a sidekick system. I hope one day Nintendo would try to compete on both 3rd party and 1st party games. Like give us a system that can handle both.

Did not expect them to make it on HW but thought they would be close like 19 mil. Holy shit I don't think there is any game exclusive or multiplat that sell that many copies in a single platform. Smash did that in less then a month yauzas!!. No wonder there software revenues is 85% first party.

They can't at this point. They'd be too far behind in software at launch.

They'll most likely still be over 18 million.

Nintendo will likely hit the 20 million goal a month or a month-and-a-half late. Yoshi's Crafted World launches March 2019 & we also have a brand new Pokemon on the horizon which will move units more so.

@davillain-: seeing how Smash did software wise pokemon will be a huge boost but hardware wise I dont see it doing any better than 2018, other than a price cut during pokemon release of course. I mean Switch sold 9 something million with Pokemon and Smash in 2018, if 2019 only has Pokemon hardware wise its going to sell good but I just cant see it being better than 2018.

@ellos: it will also means 3rd party devs arent as excited to bring AAA games to switch due to how unbalanced the scale on software is towards 1st party. Most people buy Switch for casual mario kart, smash, pokemon or mario odyssey as we look at switch best sellers. Unlike on other consoles where the primary yearly top 10 sellers is 3rd party.

I knew they weren't going to make that hardware goal. Nintendo has no plans for a price cut either. When first party software sells to that degree, I'm not even sure why third parties would even bother with Switch.

PS4 would kill for that kind of exclusive attachment rate. They can barely edge out 7- 8 million with a 80 million base.

I'd call this a success so far. Much better than WiiU and it's setting itself up to pass the Xbox One before the gen is over.

Keep in mind, those Smash Bros numbers are for December.

The game sold 12.08 million in less than a month. Pokemon sold 10 million as well, over a few months.

The Switch's software sales are phenomenal. I don't think Nintendo is too worried about the future of the system - slight tweaks to the hardware forecast aren't exactly them waiving the white flag.

Smash is gonna be a monster, and a full Pokemon game is gonna shift a shit-ton of units. It's gonna be a good year. Them falling short of the 20 mil is a little "meh," but the fact they're only a month or two off that actual figure for the year is freakin' impressive.

Less than a month and a half. And @sakaixx is concern trolling as usual with that "only;" PS4 shipped 17.7 million units in its second full fiscal year, so Switch is selling in-line with it (and Switch can still beat that since 17 million is a conservative forecast).

For sure. That game had potential but it was lacking in content, and Sony didn't support it very well. The roster could have been wayyy better.

No, they got it in their third full fiscal year. Switch has a pretty strong chance of doing the same.

Unless your point is that it's bad simply because they set expectations too high, which is ridiculous.

Hah, didn't Sheep say it would easily hit 20 million and more? Nintendo had to reduce the forecast for both Switch and 3DS.

Switch still did remarkably well in the Holiday season but they are not hitting their goal due to the super weak previous quarters (just like what many people here said would happen). Nintendo is always strong with the 1st party titles but generally terrible with the 3rd party ones. Nintendo knows their games will sell and make a killing in the Holidays, but they still need to work on their Q1-Q3 droughts.

I think Nintendo is overestimating Switch capability. Last year, lack of good selling 3rd party before holiday seasons is really hurting the system. I mean last year the most notable one is what? Octopath? Sold around 1 million something before disapearring. Hope this year gets better.

@mandzilla: hopefully it is. I am expecting it to be the first non nintendo published or nintendo mascot game to sold more than 3 million. Very low conservative number but considering the biggest physical 3rd party games on switch was mario+rabbit which was around 2 something million, its good enough.

Conversely, you could say that the fact that Switch still managed to sell pretty well without a strong lineup says a lot about its potential. As for titles this year, there aren't any third-party exclusives so nothing will sell all that well. I don't think that'll matter though. Switch will not decline this year, sorry.

@techhog89: nobody says it will decline, its only moving to its 3rd year which is usually best year for any console. I am just saying Nintendo overestimated how much it can do with Switch.

They overestimated Labo. They thought that would sell a few million units and it didn't.

*cue cows acting like Nintendo fans cared about Labo to any real degree at any point*

Looks like Nintendo is giving up on the blue ocean though... Actually, their recent statement sounds like another hint at going third-party...

Ah great, one of the concern trolls got to make the thread...

What isn't mentioned is that the software projection was actually increased by 10 million, and that the profit projection was not reduced. So much everything is fine, 20 million was just too ambitious.

This... it was always going to be a stretch to reach that. It was a lofty goal.

Still pretty impressive numbers. But a price-cut will definitely help give it a big boost.

@ellos: it will also means 3rd party devs arent as excited to bring AAA games to switch due to how unbalanced the scale on software is towards 1st party.

That's literally the opposite of what the devs themselves polled at

Indies are thriving even more so then the Vita days and for 3rd party you always want the opportunity to expand on a market. He is not entirely wrong though. The market condition is not like Sony MS. It is not a 20/80 exclusives to 3rd party respectfully. Its the other way around for Nintendo. Its why Switch failure to hit hw target can be attributed to a bad inconsistency. Very low sell quarter when there were no Nintendo hitters. Nintendo has to basically keep there releases up to sell the hw. They are actually capable of selling up to 25 mill if they keep things going. The other two its different we know about MS absent but Sony also has quarter where they get out of the way.

on a console with a 32 million install base.

Well, that install base bought the switch to play these Nintendo games. Its not like people buy Nintendo consoles to play 3rd party titles like in the other two

over 20 titles selling over a million. nobody buys third parties tho.

@dotWithShoes: It's not even inconceivable that people may actually prefer buying the Switch version of third-party games sometimes either.

Besides the portability, there's advantages to certain titles such as Okami with the touch brush controls, Doom's motion aiming or the exclusive content for Starlink.

@ellos: the point he's missing is that there was a poll the other day in which devs expressed huge interest in working on the Switch in the future - exceeding the PS and Xbox lines. He claimed its 1st vs 3rd disparity meant they would not be interested. But as he said himself - the numbers dont lie, and the Switch has devs' attentions now. Its 3rd party interest is growing, not shrinking.
