Switch OLED has already almost surpassed PS5 sales in Japan

I didnt believe the rumors, who the heck would pay such a high price for a Switch. But after seeing the latest reports, im now a firm believer. PS5 is about to soon be surpassed by a Switch upgrade. My how the mighty Sony has fallen in the motherland. And now Xbox is threatening to take over second place in UK and NA. Do you think Sony can recover from such a defeat on all sides?

Holy hell! Did anyone look at the software list? All 30 titles were Switch games. And judging by the hardware numbers, I’m doubting PS or Xbox are seriously trying to stock Japan. The Xbox sold 263 consoles total across the Series consoles. That like in the margin of error for consoles being shipped to Japan accidentally. There’s no way Xbox is making a real effort to send Japan Xbox consoles…

The Switch sells incredibly well in Japan because it's a handheld / hybrid.

Switch OLED is literally proof; it's a Switch with a better screen. Im not sure why people ignore that. It's by far the largest reason.

Proof? The PS4, PS3, and Wii all sold roughly the same in Japan. The PS5 is basically performing the same. What do you think the similarities are? They're traditional consoles. That market has been stagnant if not shrinking for well over a decade.

They honestly don't care as much about core games like Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Persona etc. Those Japanese franchises get beat out by Big Brain Academy now ffs.

@goldenelementxl: its not that surprising. Just judging by the software sales it seems to me that actual ps5 sales in Japan are much lower than they appear. Its incredibly easy for companies to buy up stock in bulk then resell. The chinese market is huge and they're nearby, so reselling is probably rampant.

Consoles aren't popular in Japan anymore. Handhelds are. Why beat this dead horse.

It’s “up to a million” consoles. They sold 1.7 in 2021. I’m not sure what PS is trying to accomplish with this. But there’s gotta be a PowerPoint slide somewhere that makes it makes sense.

The switch is the future of gaming. More powerful and feature rich versions will come from ps and Xbox, with supplemental power options for docked mode and or "the cloud". Look ye on and tremble, for thou has seen thine own future through Nintendo's all-seeing eyes!

It sold more than the PS1 and, basically the same as the PS3 + PS4 combined in Japan.

Vita didn't sell very well for numerous reasons but, it was literally still being supported by software in Japan until the very end.

Yikes ... no wonder Nintendo is in no hurry to release new hardware anytime soon, a few months ago i was betting that Switch 2 would be revealed this year, but with this kind of numbers, they really don't need it.

I can see Sony and MS thinking into their own "hybrid" console soon enough though.

no thanks, and MS already has a handheld option for their games that works well enough. I use it more than a few times on my phone, its called xcloud. With fast wifi speeds, and now 5g data speeds, not to mention we're getting more and more data, there really isn't a need for MS or Sony to release a handheld.

Also like others have said here already, nintendo games are more tailored for a handheld experience. This is one reason that psp and the vita got crushed by nintendo DS/3DS.

In a country like America that difference is negligible but in one as small as Japan, that's a sizable variation.

Upon hearing that yesterday or so I could do nothing but shake my head. While there is nothing wrong with a PS4, such a strategy seems like a few steps backward.

I can understand why. If I played handheld more than the two or three times a year I take the Switch with me on vacation, I'd consider the upgrade. That OLED screen is beautiful.

@techhog89: No, not really. All Switch models are handhelds. Heck, the Switch OLED is only worth it if you play in handheld mode since the screen is worthless in docked mode. Both the Lite and, OLED we're handheld mode upgrades or downgrades. One makes it only handheld, and the other makes it a better handheld.

@oof85: Really? Calling me out on a 1-1.5m difference is hilarious. There's a reason I said "roughly the same". The sales difference between all three is small. Especially if you take into account the number of years on the market for each system.

The difference between the Switch, DS, 3DS or PSP is like almost 2x the Wii, PS3 or PS4 in Japan.

Games / franchises like Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Kingdom Hearts, Street Fighter, Yakuza, Tales of Arise, Nier, Demon's Souls, Devil May Cry, Sekiro, Monster Hunter World, Scarlett Nexus etc. are all stellar Japanese games that aren't no Switch.

PlayStation is the defacto platform for all of those games. And guess what? Its apparently not enough.
