Why does everyone say the Super Smash bros. series is not competitive?

Honestly, I?m not saying the Super Smash bros. series is some kind of masterpiece but I really think it is a very competitive fighting series. Unlike most fighters, there is a big concentration on aerial moves. This allows for way more possibilities of move combinations and potential threats. Also, you can play with 4 characters on the screen at once, although it seems to be more intense with just a 1 on 1 battle. All the characters have a wide variety of moves and have distinct move styles and special moves.

I will admit, Super Smash bros. Brawl took a step back in intensity and competitive play, but Super Smash bros. Melee will always be an intense fighter.

Brawl is definitely casualized compared to Melee but I don't think the game is broken or anything like some people here seem to think.

Actually people don't like it because of it's community.

The games (At least SSBM) has a pretty high skill ceiling when using advanced suff.

Is Melee harder? I have the least experience with that one. I played tons of the N64 SSB and recently started playing SSBB. I have only played maybe a couple of hours of Melee. I do know that Fox and Zelda/Sheik seem to dominate in Melee

Its not very deep, even with Melee you had you rely on glitches to be a pro player.

It is competitive and the best players in the world really put a show. But it is not to the level of SSF4 for example, which torunaments prove to have such a high level of skill.

Please do not speak on the behalf of the fighting game community because that is absolutely wrong.

Smash was once the biggest of all the fighters and was at EVO every year. SSBB was the game that tore the community apart. Not to say it is a bad game but since Brawl, there has only been a substantial (but not has big as before) amount of players at a competitive level. Most play and are known through the Smash Boards.

As for as community goes, Smash was liked for the most part. Its usually the Capcom fanboys that hate on it the most.

That explains it then. I am not big on fighters myself, but I do like to watch Street Fighter tournaments. Most of the feedback regarding the game that I saw was coming from them and it was almost always negative

Yea, thats how most Capcom fanboys are. If its not VS, SF or a fighter by Capcom, then everything else is not as good. They hate way too much, just look at MK when it came out. Huge backlash by the community just because it out sold and got better reviews than MVC3.

Though I will say that Capcom fighters are usually my favorite. Vampire Savior for life! :P

Well some of the moves are pretty easy to execute, with other games you have to learn alot of complex moves, but Smash Bros makes it easy. Also there are many environmental things that can tip the odds in your favor, like drop items and stage hazards ect....also some charecters are just plain better than others.

That being said I do think the game is competitive, I mean it's a fighting game. But I don't really care about that stuff, I just play to have fun.

Mabey for some people it is, but alot of "competitive" players just throw fits and get emotionally involved in the games like children. I don't think they are having fun.

Actually, yes he does. Some people take multiplayer gaming way too seriously. I've played Mario Kart Wii with family and have gotten my ass kicked, but I still found it to be quite fun even though I lost.

I had a blast with Brawl but to be honest it is the only one I have ever played. I never tried to learn how to play it. I used it mainly for get togethers. It is what it is. A fun game that made me turn the Wii on. An accomplishment.

I got to play the world champion. I was only able to hit him once in a seven stock match. I don't think I've played a game with such a steep skill gap. I think it's logarithmic.

SSB 64 is definitely a skill fighter....watchinmg some of the combos and variety and the difficulty of pulling some moves off is incredible to watch.

im not sure about melee but usually people say that was even more competative...

brawl is a party fighter like charizerd says.

Which leaves a fighter with very poor mechanics, shifting stages that can still screw you, and random elements like tripping. Super Smash Bros is FUN because of the items. If this were Melee, yes, it can still be awesome without the items, but Brawl especially is a full on party game. And there's nothing wrong with that: it's still incredible.

Honestly I couldn't disagree with you more. I spent pretty much all my time playing Melee with no items in Final Destination and it was a complete blast nothing but skill there. I can't recall which is the stage in Brawl that has no hazards but I did the same. And it doesn't have poor mechanics :? The game is very fluid, it's easy to pick up and play but so much to learn.

I said Melee is still okay- it's mostly Brawl I am talking about. It's floaty, very forgiving (you can grab on to ledges from like ten meters away), stages have hazards mostly and are poorly balanced for competitive play (like the only one which is perfect for competitive play is, you guessed it, Final Destination), and there are still random elements like Tripping. Melee is still fine- wasn't it even in MLG at one point?

Many people in the competitive fighting community don't like it because it is so simplified and has an incredibly low skill ceiling.

I also think its kind of dumb how there are several characters that are utterly worthless and couldn't ever win in a competitve tournament (such as Jigglypuff)

BPoole96

You've never fought against someone who knows how to use the Wall of Pain...

People who spent years mastering complicated movesets and trapping their opponents in inescapable combos were upset when it took minimal effort to become a decent player in Smash Bros, so their unrivaled mastery at tournaments fighters became useless knowledge for a round of 3-man stock. I'm saying this because my brother hates smash bros because I kicked his ass at it back in 1999, and he's the best tournament fighter player I personally know. Without his ability to own every match, he feels like the game cheats him out of a victory, so it's therefore unfair to him.

I'm not saying that's how it is for everyone, but the uncomplicated movesets and non-hp based gameplay are alien concepts to most tournament fighter players that make it fair game for everyone who plays it. They see it as taking minimal skill to master, so the game isn't worthy of their time (because they get their asses kicked at it half the time).

I do agree that Brawl even though it enhanced a few things really messed up things like some character nerfing and the slower pace but even so it still has some solid mechanics that are deeper than they seem. I will admit that it is ruined by things like the random tripping so I can see where you're coming from. The way I see it is if you want to play a competetive match with friends take out items and play Final Destination or any stage without hazards if you want to try it out as a party game add all items and play random stages. You can play both ways, really just depends on what you choose.

Was Brawl really that "simplified" or different from Melee?

I honestly haven't played much of Brawl, but for the most part I thought it was similar with new levels, characters and some new features. I loved Melee though, it was amazing, I just played enough of Brawl to know I love it too, but it's been a while, and nowhere near the play time I put into Melee.

The Pity Smashes won't trigger if items are turned off and set to none. In addition, the Pity Smash only triggers once someone falls 5 points behind the current leader in a match. Because tournaments play 3 stock matches, its impossible to trigger a Pity Smash in a tournament setting because the losing player will never fall 5 points behind.

I agree but you can abuse them and get by not really mastering the character or game rules. SFIII has plenty of glitches that people exploit buts its also a deep fighter.

Many people in the competitive fighting community don't like it because it is so simplified and has an incredibly low skill ceiling.

I also think its kind of dumb how there are several characters that are utterly worthless and couldn't ever win in a competitve tournament (such as Jigglypuff)

Incredibly low low skill ceiling? Wow. Go and look up any mlg smash bros videos. Any Jigglypuff is actually one of the most rigged characters in the game, calling her utterly worthless shows you clearly don't play Smash Bros Meele propely.
