Super Mario Odyssey Is Series' Biggest Debut (2D Or 3D) Ever; 2m Worldwide, 1.2m in US Alone; Switch Sales At 2.6m in US

REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 2, 2017 – In just five days, the new Super Mario Odyssey video game for the Nintendo Switch system sold more than 1.1 million units in the U.S. alone. That makes it the fastest-selling Super Mario game ever in the U.S., surpassing the New Super Mario Bros. Wii game. Super Mario Odyssey is also the fastest-selling game so far for Nintendo Switch.

The game has already been enjoyed by well over a million people, and is likely to be enjoyed by many more, as those early players continue to spread their excitement for Mario. On Metacritic.com, which aggregates scores from certain reviewers, for example, the game currently has a critical review average of 97, with 43 perfect scores. This makes Super Mario Odyssey the best-reviewed game on Metacritic for any system of the last three years, tied only with Nintendo Switch launch game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

“The public continues to respond positively to Mario’s latest adventure,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “We’re also seeing sales momentum for Nintendo Switch thanks to an ever-growing catalog of games from large publishers and indie developers.”

Nintendo has increased supplies of Nintendo Switch to meet demand through the holidays. The total number of Nintendo Switch systems sold in the United States through the end of October now stands at more than 2.6 million.

This is well deserved success for a fucking fantastic game. It's my favorite 3D Mario ever, and one of the best games ever made. Take a bow, Nintendo, and I hope to see this game selling many millions more.

It deserves great sales if its great, thats all there is to it.

This game, among few others, should be a paradigm for other developers to try for their best, and sales will come, with one way or another.

Good because Super Mario 3D World sold like crap, and that game didn't deserve it.

yea mario bundle at best but was in stock for like a week. then when mario came out and the reviews poured in the bundle was sold out in hours.

This game is so much better than 3D World.. It's making it's way to Mario 64 levels for me. Fucking amazeballs, in other words.

The sign that a 3D Mario game is selling faster than a 2D Mario game may be signs that good marketing is why Mario Odyssey is sell so well in the U.S. and Europe.

It deserves its success.

This is an economically wise decision, so I believe it.

I like that the difficulty keeps ramping up far past the credits making it just more and more fun as you get better and better at it.

What's wrong with a company marketing its product?

It gives a false sense of popularity. A games quality should always be judged by sales, but it's hard to tell which of those are true sales when the waters have been muddied by aggressive marketing.

Nintendo gives us two GOTYs and they're thanking us. Classy.
