www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-02-27-valves-take-on-devs-self-discounting-on-steam

' The initiative, dug up by Reddit user Sharkiller

from a private Steam forum , will allow

developers to configure, up to two months in

advance, sales lasting up to two weeks. There

don't appear to be any restrictions on discount

amounts, and Valve doesn't need to approve the

deals.

To prevent exploitation, however, Valve specified

that a game cannot be discounted more often

than once every two months.'

Best move ever since now publishers will be able to actively react to any dips in sales and give commercial flops a second life which they wouldn't otherwise have. A win-win for everybody. Consoles MUST follow the suit in order for the market to be self-sustainable or else more developers will go bankrupt.

I thought it was allowing devs to charge people to playtest games for them and running off with the money to Cayman Islands.

I spoke about that with one of our game devs here in Croatia. Gamepires. They made this action racing game Gas Guzzlers.

Anyway, the guy told me that since Greenlight is finally shutting down, Steam is heading towards a concept where developers will have an ability to make their own custom pages, and will have more influence on how their games are getting discounted (from the article), appear on the main page etc.

I wonder how will this turn out.

I never bothered with Greenlight. Its like wading through a river of shit just to find a few golden nuggets.

Yeah, the guy told me Greenlight was basically the worst idea Valve made for Steam, ever.

It turned out that your title getting greenlit was based purely on luck, because there was ton of shit already waiting to get greenlit. And even though you had shitload of likes for your title, it didn't guarantee you'll end up in the batch of greenlit titles. At the time they registered on Greenlight, 1300 other titles also registered, almost in the same time. They were always in the top 100, but as new titles got registered, they were constantly falling down the ladder. In the end, they found a publisher and appeared on Steam instantly.

Greenlight was a good idea, but terribly executed.

Default prices will be bumped up with the illusion of 75% most likely. They will find a way to abuse it, no doubt.

Well it did have quality control plus it did have some marketing to it, especially for the good greenlight games like Hyper Light Drifter which help bring attention to their kickstarter.

How exactly will valve quality control indie titles if the community can't choose with greenlight, what's the procedure to block desperation genre and generic RPGMaker games from getting on steam.

Lord Gaben will lead you to salvation if only you accept his truth and build a gaming PC or show your devotion by buying a steam machine.

Excellent news. Now if only Valve updated the store interface on the Steam App first. It's outdated as the now-large library of Early Access and Greenlit stuff along with traditional releases has made the 'Specials' tab awfully clunky; especially when it comes to DLC handling. It annoys me to this day that when I hit 'Next' then go back I have to scroll all the way down to where I was again. I wont join this reddit-style-Gaben circlejerk until this is resolved.

I personally cant wait for the potential of Steam Music. Steam could be a one stop shop for buying videogame OSTs. It would be great if even soundtracks from games not on PC were sold on the steam store.
