"Anyone who backed Star Citizen, which has received an insane amount of crowdfunding, can no longer ask to be refunded by developer Cloud Imperium Games (CIG). Although standard means of asking for refunds were removed through the Star Citizen’s June 6, 2016 Terms of Service (TOS) update, CIG stopped issuing them completely in December 2017".

Sadly I’m a huge Chris Roberts fan and still worship the Wing Commander series but.....I kinda wish I could get my money back too and just buy it if and when it ever gets released. I understand that it takes time to make a game this huge but the game I backed was Squadron 42 the successor to Wing Commander...it was supposed to be released years ago. I didn’t back this massive project it has become.

Case is still pending actually.

https://www.lacourt.org/casesummary/ui/

Case No. 18SMSC01860

Without any detail it is kind of hard to talk about the court case side.

Got to love Australian consumer protection laws though. Our ACCC is awesome at representing the publics interest and chasing stuff down.

They are in their right to do so. Just do not pre-order or fund unfinished games. I didn't put a penny into it. I will buy the game once it fully finished if it ever gets finished.

I'm yet to see anything that really comes close to looking like polished gameplay from SC. I've seen lots of impressively modeled ships though...

Scam, as in the devs of the game promises things that never comes? Loooooooots of developers do that. I don't really see this one as more of a scam than the other heaps of unfinished games devs are asking money for while promising impossible things.

Just don't purchase unfinished games, and you're good.

Yes, this happened a long time ago already. It looks a little shady doesn't it?

Well at least I can have the little joy of flying around in my little prospector ship when I want to, and crash it into people running around on the spacedocks. Again I do think they'll deliver a mostly finished game, but it's taking extremely long and that means their costs must have been skyrocketing...

They have a space door, a very expensive espresso machine and multiple offices... They must have spend n-times more by now than the backers gave them. But honestly, if the money I put into SC will only amount to the stupid space door they installed, it would be so funny that I wouldn't mind. Honestly that would be hilarious. I just hope they will preserve that stupid thing for centuries as part of gaming history.

On one hand, I want to say if you've waited this long debating whether or not it was a good financial decision to back Star Citizen project, you've kind of already made your peace with your money & getting your money's worth in the end. On the other hand, this is a really sleazeball move to lock in people who paid money in good faith and have yet to see any kind of reward for it.

At this point, the fact that Cloud Imperium offered it for as long as they have already puts them in a far higher moral position than the overwhelming majority of Game publishers/developers/platforms in terms of refund window length. They can't offer it forever, they have bills to pay (which I can totally understand) in the end and as a business, they weren't even required to offer them for anywhere near as long as they have so far.

(Word of advice, if you are gonna back a kickstarter project, always, always, always, do a lot of research into the project by asking questions and once you get all the available data then put money into it and also make sure there's a refund offer in the end)

Damm right they are, theres so many rights for customers that people dont know about like if you get extended warranty and ask if it covers everything, they 9/10 say yes (especially jbhifi due to commission) if you recorded them saying it, they have to honor it cause the accc sees consumers as idiots, to bad not all major retails train the staff properly in it, but a call to the head office usally will fix it. This is probably going to get threw and aussies will get a refund. I thought people would of learned their lesson from steam.

The company won't refund it but I bet if you spoke to your credit card provider they would happily claw it back for you and would not give a shit what the developers say.

I believe they are back to a 14-day refund period, as opposed to just refunding backers after way longer. Just like Steam with their 14-day and less than 2 hour game time.

All the hype surrounding this game for years was about how great it looked and how awesome a PC game not compromised consoles was looking. If anything the game is just a crowd funded tech demo and people should expect nothing more.

This reminds me of when I considered backing this game. They already had about $4MIL and I thought: "Well they probably have enough money, I'll just buy it when it comes out"

I personally would have preferred if Cloud Imperium tried to do things more like Elite: Dangerous, which means they could have made a smaller version of the final product and then added to it over time to produce the final product, but then you'd be yelling about how the game as released had no content (just like they did when Elite: Dangerous first released) and that it was insane that all that money went to a small game.

Yeah, the whole "no refunds" is pretty much a moot point. Refunds are still occuring. Though the odds of getting a refund on purchase from 4-6 years ago is probably slim, and fair enough too.

To be fair you are paying for the development costs...

But at the same time you would have to be retarded to pay all of the game cost up front, what incentive do they have to complete it if they already have your money. They are not gonna be in a rush to finish it now are they especially if they can get some other suckers to pay full price. Once the game is released the price will only go down from that point on.

This is why you have those shitty early access games that never get finished.

I love how people still don't understand crowdfunding. Just because a game is late, doesn't mean it's a scam. A hat in time, a game I backed, had a predicted release date of February 2014. It released in October 2017 and is one of the best Platformers of this gen. If a Platformer releases almost 4 years late with an awesome quality, how is it so surprising the most ambitious game of all time gets delayed?

With every month that passes by other games catch up to it.......... it's certainly not as advanced as it was a few years ago as other AAA and engines have caught up to it.

By the time it releases there's a danger it might be outdated.

They freely handed their money to a random dude in the street who ran off with it, and now they're upset he's not coming back. Lol.

This looks like a cool game but I'll pay for it when it's done. Not a penny for unfinished games.

Everyone is free to decide what level they want to be. A hat in time had a 5000 "design a boss" tier. Nobody is going around saying A hat in time costs 5k for the full experience. But honestly I haven't informed myself enough to make a statement about this tier. It sounds insane to me as well. I don't know if that content is also unlockable ingame or not. Or if you can unlock compareable ships.

Yeah I give you this one. The gap is getting closer and closer with every new big AAA release. I do agree that it's getting less impressive as time goes on. Still, what I've played already (yeah, there are actual build out, people calling it Vaporware are insane) it is a game with a lot of potential

Only way to mine is with Prospector ship and that you can only buy with real money. You can borrow it from other player who has bought it though.

To be honest, visually it's not that impressive anymore and next gen is coming in a year or two. By then it's pretty much dated. In terms of content, I've played it and it's a tech demo. Its far away from being a full game.

I think it isn't a full on scam, because at least they launched a tech demo, but this game will not be what star lords expect "omg revolutionary, groundbreaking." Far form it. If it were to launch tomorrow, critics would massacre the game as it is essentially a tech demo.

Now then... 6 years and we still have a tech demo. Will it ever be a full game? My guess it comes out and it'll join the Duke Nukem Forever/No Man's Sky Hall of fame.

Also, some of the best games of all time didn't take 10+ years of development. The only games I know of that took that long ended up flopping hard.

@needhealing: Oh i'm with you, chances are it will disappoint when it releases. I just don't like people saying it's a scam or vaporware when you can actually play the tech demo as you call it. I hope it will be good and release soon, but we won't know until they're done.
