'Nobody knew anything about Switch back then'

Although the reveal of Namco Bandai's Soulcalibur VI has fans sharpening their axes in preparation, it seems that Switch owners expecting their own handheld Stage of History may be a little disappointed.

UK's Gamecentral spoke with producer Motohiro Okubo last week and took the opportunity to ask him whether SCVI might come to Nintendo's hybrid-console, jokingly adding that we could see The Legend of Zelda's Link make a comeback.Unfortunately, Okubo said that the Switch console wasn't even in public awareness when Namco began development on SCVI.

"Soulcalibur VI development started more than three years ago. And nobody knew anything about Switch back then," said Okubo. "So, as a matter of fact we are not working on Switch, as of now. But of course, personally, I’m interested in the platform. So if the Unreal Engine can adapt to Switch, and evolve itself, then maybe the possibility will be more."

A shame, as Soulcalibur on the go would be pretty funky. Still, the game is scheduled to launch on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, so there's at least plenty of scope for people to play it on a variety of other formats that they might own.

@uninspiredcup:

Nice of you to include a picture of Taki's famous knockers to soften the blow.

Did anyone really expect them too? I would expect a Tekken 7 port before a Soul calibur one

That’s somewhat unfortunate as I would have been interested in seeing what possible guest character could have been in that version.

Exactly. Would probably get exclusive content.

I personally wasn't expecting a Switch version anyways. Soul Calibur VI development started more than three years ago. And nobody knew anything about Switch back then. I can see why Switch owners are piss off about this, part of the fun with seeing a new Soul Calibur is seeing what the guest characters will be and I was kinda hoping to see Link return to the series if that was the intent of course.

I could totally have seen Bayonetta making a guest appearance in a Switch version. Now I’m sad that this won’t happen. :(

Well, at least it runs on UE4...... I don't think Bandai/Namco like making re-releases or late ports of their games very much.

Off topic, but I've started playing a lot of Soul Calibur 4 and a bit of Soul Calibur 5. Finding it hard to move on from Soul Calibur 2 to be honest, I now appreciate how well done and balanced that was, I like the pacing more too. Not too sure I can get behind six right now.

No way to play fighting games on the Switch anyway since there isn't any controller with a decent d-pad.

I've gone through the Pro Controller, 8Bitdo SN30 Pro, and Joycons so far. The first two misfire like crazy and the third just has buttons instead of a d-pad.

Love the Switch, but Nintendo really dropped the ball when it comes to controller options.

I didn't expect it.

Though it would be cool to get a version if it is in Unreal 4.

but I honestly expect a Soul Calibur Legacy collection or just Soul Calibur 2 HD then Soul Calibur 6.

True. And I don't think Switch owners will be that pissed off because I bet most of us have another platform too. It would have been nice but it's fine with me anyway.

@FireEmblem_Man: Yeah it is. But just because it's running on Unreal Engine 4 doesn't mean it can run on the Switch. Likely the Switch will have a hard time running a game like Soul Calibur 6 in 60fps, which for Fighting games is vital and necessary.

Although I wouldn't rule it out completely, but I'm just saying that's likely the cause.

@LegatoSkyheart: Yes, but I remember that Epic included a special mode to get games running on the Switch easily. I wouldn't think 3D fighting games to be that demanding, unless they add to much effects in the background. Which probably means to decrease shadows, lighting, and AS, as well as the odd resolutions, to get the game running.

How well the did Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny ran on the OPS, due to having some assets from SC4?

Not releasing it on Switch with a Nintendo character is a big missed opportunity. They could have Link in it. Or Bayonetta perhaps. She might fit in with the other characters better..

Portable SC would be awesome, and I doubt I'm one of few who wants it.

@FireEmblem_Man: I don't I never played it.

All I know is, with the nature of Fighting games, it's usually a priority to put Performance over Graphics. With Soul Calibur VI, I wouldn't be surprised if Namco Bandai want both, so they're probably going to make the most graphically pleasing title they can while also running at a smooth 60 frames per second and sacrificing any of that will probably hurt the overall image of the game.

Which is why I would put my bets on Namco releasing a Soul Calibur Collection or Soul Calibur 2 HD on Switch rather then Soul Calibur VI.

I read that as: "We're too lazy to try really hard to get our game to as wide of audience as possible."

Would buy it for the Switch if it did come out before any of the other console tbh. Doubly so if they added Link back. I played as him a lot back in SC2.

Man do I miss SC...

Its just dumb not too, it would be the first proper fighting game on the switch. Guess they don't want to make money.

Translated: We did not know what a weak POS Switch would be when we started development and our game can't scale back that much.

Awesome, sounds like we will prob get it later on. Nice, truthful answer that Switch was announced too late in the development cycle for them

The Unreal engine is super versatile and fighting games generally aren't rendering much. If it can do Breath Of The Wild or Super Mario Oddesy I see no reason why it can't run this. It's not event that visually impressive looking currently.

Would argue the main program currently is the terrible controls. Unless you're willing to wish out on extras, joycons are practically useless.

Just due to the pricing probably wouldn't pick it up on the Switch anyways tbh.

PC version superior and cheaper, so literally no point, on this end.

No point releasing any games on a garbage console, just let it die as WiiU.Nintendo is pathetic in comparision to Sony/Xbox/PC and should stick to childrens for its gaming market.

But yet Nintendo fannies are begging daily for these same "shit" games on PC *cough* Skyrim *cough*. Don't allow the salt to dehydrate you.
