Sony-aquires-cloud-gaming-servie-Gaikai-

With all this talk about the PS4, I think we are overlooking Sony's recently aquired Gaikai. If you go to www.gaikai.com, you will see images of AAA PlayStation titles in the background of every page.

What does this all mean? Will Gaikai become the cloud version of the PS4? Is the PS4 just the hardware option for people who have poor internet? If Gaikai is really the cloud PlayStation 4, then what will that mean for the Xbox 720 and Wii U? Will Sony be the only one offering a cloud service?

Even though we know so little about it, I think we may be in for a cool surprise next year. I feel that 2013 is going to be a big year for gaming.

Use it to make PS3, PS2, Ps1 and PSP/Vita games backwards compatible with the ps4 making it therefor cost less.

I don't think this is tied to the PS4. Just my view, but I think Sony is simply asserting their ownership in terms of the titles displayed. It's part of the Sony family.

Possible streaming of PS3 titles, but I very much doubt it.

This could have much more to do with a multimedia front.

I think the PS4 will be powerful enough to do full software emulation.

It doesn't really matter how much power the PS4 has. Gaikai is an opportunity to store PS1 games (and others, not really sure which) in the cloud and charge a fee for accessing them. I assume we will be able to access them on PS4, Vita and Android devices.

Use it to go multiplat. They'll put games like Uncharted 4 and GT6 on PC, Wii U, and Ouya.

Generally, two things:

1) Utilize cloud streaming for backwards compatibility, which fits if Sony is indeed planning to move away from the cell architecture.

2) Enables other PS certified devices to play full-fledged console games. It's essentially the first step to a games client for Sony that you could have on your PC, iPad, Smartphone, etc.

That would be a day to remember... the day the sony exclusive died and the meta game was over for them... id say its unlikely but it is a possibility.

Streaming PS3 games once PS4 is out, either on PS4 or other devices.

I do not think sony would spend 400 million just to stream retro games. I think they have some thing big planned for the future. Live ps4 demos to try before you buy is what i think they are going for.

If OnLive's founder is to be believed, Sony will be trudging through a mountain of patent suits before they do anything with it at all...

Exactly.

This is directly from the website:

"Truth is, the future has never looked brighter. We're working hard with Sony Computer Entertainment to advance our cloud gaming platform, and we can't wait to unveil the next generation of it to you."

Here's what I think:

Backwards compatibility-Cloud storage could easily allow Sony to upload games from PS3 and other past platforms and allow people to easily download them from cloud, included with save data. This would be cheaper than including a hard version of BC.

Push for Digital Distrubution-Sony probably wants this, and with Gaikai they could implement an excellent DD service. Also they could make it more attractive for Plus Members by offering them special savings and free games from the cloud.

Hard drive space-This goes with the last point I made, downloading games takes up hard drive space, cloud does not. So they could avoid that problem all together with Gaikai.

I'm excited about it, I think Sony has a really good surprise with it.

This could be part of Sony's expanded PS+ subscription as well as BC for PS1, PS2, and PS3. The latest rumors also suggested that if you own a physical copy of any game on any of those systems you will be able to download the game free from the Playstation Store.

I'm guessing there will be some sort of PS+ subscription service. You will be able to play and own(rent) any game available in the library for PS3 and PS4 as long as you are subscribed.

My guesses.

As for Vita, It'll be a long time before game streaming wirelessly will be possible with any semblance of quality. (I don't mean a wired cable/DSL connection that is simply directed to a WiFi router.)

How does this company even make any money? I can't find their streaming service anywhere on the internet and there is no mention of where to find it on their website besides best buy and walmart, neither of which seems to actually have it. How do i use it?

-Backwards Compatability

-Cloud Game storage

-Push for digital distribution

-Stream demos

-Offer an HD+ version of all PS4 games(Plays on console, or play at higher quaility on Gaikai)

-Broden PS4 support by allowing PC games to stream on it

If handled properly this could be the killer feature in the PS4 along with a fully overhauled PSN (maybe built in Google TV also)

Unfortunatly my internet will not be able to take advantage of this service:(

the OnLive hardware seemed very simple. It might not cost all that much to integrate it completely into a conventional console and supplement it. Just because there may have been patent issues for OnLive doesn't mean that Sony will run into the same problems. Maybe the patents OnLive were running into were ones held by the major game companies like Sony.

Well, it's gone now. They used to be a game demo service. They were on Facebook and some gaming sites.
