Sony shutting down stores for PS3, PSP, and PS Vita

Some on Twitter are wondering whether this will affect their digital purchases they have already made (John Linneman from DF being one of those wondering )

Once you've bought the games you can easily easily re-download them at anytime through your download history

I'm surprised they haven't been shut down yet. PSV only lasted till about 2015. PS3 still had a couple games release last year.

As someone who has their PS3 still plugged in for gaming classic PS3, it probably makes sense. The only two games I have on PS3 that haven't come to future consoles are...Metal Gear Solid Collection and Dragon Ball Z Budokai 1+3 HD. I have them both digital. The Vita is kinda odd cause its still an okay handheld in today's standard, I would at least keep that store open until around 2025 at the very least IMO. I don't play my Vita that very often but I better start working on buying the games for it asap.

Will it still be possible to download patches for PS3 games when the store closes or are all PS3 servers going dark?

Anywho not a big deal for me since i didnt really buy anything digitally for the PS3. but this is one of the things that irks me about console stores. they close eventually. its one of the main things that stops me from buying games on any consoles digitally. I mean if my wiiu craps out i will lose access to all my wiiware games for example. thats it. no redownload option. end of the line.

on the one hand its understandable they are taking them down. the PS3 and PSP are ancient and the vita was a flop. chances are activity on those stores is very very low and not worth keeping up and running.

But it doesn't really do much for the ol confidence in buying games digitally.

hopefully this is just a legacy hump and, with it being easier to maintain BC with consoles now, there will be no need to drop stores in the future.

Hmm. I may have to look into downloading some more games that I want get on my PS3. There’s definitely some classic PSOne and PS2 games I’d like to have.

That reminds me... hey Capcom could you please port all the old school RE games to current console please???

Hopefully the have a big sale before shutting down. I still have some PSN cash to spend.

Too bad Sony never thought of giving cross platform support for the digital games. Not bridging the PS1/PS2 classics catalog from PS3 was such a lost opportunity.

I wonder how much it actually cost to keep the stores up? It doesn't bother me much unless that means no more patches or not being able to redownload purchased games, then it's a big problem.

It would seem the only digital consoles worth buying are the ones you can hack to ensure you have a means of getting everything you want out of the system when companies close their stores in an attempt to try to force you to buy into something newer.

Shame. I still buy some games for the Xbox 360 digitally, because strangely some games are available there, but not on the Series S/X store.

Once I've bought them on the Xbox 360, I'm free to download and play them on the Series S.

I'm more worried about patches, since I do play a PS3 game every now and then, and there's definitely some games that need a day one patch

@Star67: I don't think it will effect that at all as patches aren't tied to the ps store. If I'm wrong somebody please correct me.

This IS a good thing. Thought the PSP store was already closed though. PlayStation already removed movies and tv shows due to all the streaming systems. Most of this content for PS3, PSP & Vita should be moved to PS Now anyway. They really should only focus on PS4 and PS5 right now.
