Sony reveals groundbreaking news on PS5

Sony's own Kenichiro Yoshida dropped the biggest official info bomb to date on PS5. He had this to say:

“At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware”

He wasn't making a dumb statement that the next hardware would be like "next gen and stuff". He was confirming that there would be a new generation of hardware, period.

I didn't misunderstand the statement, the obviousness of a PS5 is the joke, lad. Did you truly believe that there would not be a PS5 in hardware?

Maybe you're referring to the concept of an all-digital playstation platform future, which would be silly to consider at this point, although definitely a possibility at the time.

Yes they are since MS is just 45 or more million units away,the PS4 stopped selling and its games suck.

Makes me get a chuckle thinking about all of those "It's the future" posts we got since... like... 2013 and stuff. Seems like the people seemingly angry about this non-announcement are from the same faction that is, indeed, the butt of this joke.

On the contrary, my feeble minded fellow, the OP stands regardless of which interpretation you subscribe to.

This may be rather difficult for you to follow, so allow me to spell it out for you: 1) There will be a PS5 (crazy, I know, but work with me here) 2) It's going to be in hardware. Go perform a widespread survey, I'll bet money that most people already knew this.

@XVision84: no. It's not a surprise. But you need to understand what is being said here - MS has billed their hardware as a continuum moving forward. Sony is simply saying "in our case, this will be a new generation".

You're making a mountain out of a molehill by trying too hard to make fun of it only being a molehill. Kind of absurd

PS5 becoming a streaming platform would be an egregious misstep for Sony. Especially after the Xbox One got burned at the stake for being online only (alongside other shortcomings in its announcement). Globally, the required infrastructure doesn't exist to support a solely streaming platform. You'd be alienating a lot of potential customers, and even of those that do have the internet capabilities to support streaming PS5 games, a good portion of them prefer owning physical copies.

Although with Project Stream from Google, Playstation Now's growth, Microsoft's xCloud, and the growing portion of online sales relative to physical, we might see streaming platforms pop up much further down the line. It would require a very careful and smart transition period by the Big 3 though.

@tdkmillsy: Microsoft is already saying that they are working on two new consoles. Sony has not said anything about the PS5 yet.

Is Microsoft's next hardware not going to be next gen? Just because Microsoft changed the way they're releasing next hardware, it doesn't mean: 1) There will be new hardware and 2) The hardware will be a new generation of improvements.

It's only absurd if you view it in a cynical way, as you seem to be doing. It took me less than a minute to concoct that OP, merely by tapping my fingers (such is the magic of a keyboard, what a time to be alive!). If that's your basis of "trying too hard", then I'm afraid that standard must be raised quite a good deal ;).

It's no secret that PS5 was in the works. Same goes for MS next-gen Xbox Scarlet, so we all know both next-gen consoles are already confirm now as it is.

Who would have thought that after the 4th iteration of PS another console was coming. This is shocking news. Particularly considering that PS games look better than $4000 PCs I thought at least until 2030 Sony wouldn't be releasing anything.

If I wasn't so lazy I would go back a few months/year or two back and dig up threads about people arguing with me that I said it is all but guaranteed there will be a PS5.

I even had one guy say he KNEW there wasn't going to be one and that SONY themselves had stated they had no intentions. He said he was going to quote my post for ownage when the time came.

So... yeah, it might not have been so obvious for some here.

For everyone else though, yeah, I'd say it was pretty obvious.
