https://www.eurogamer.net/sony-reportedly-making-playstation-5-with-removable-disc-drive

A PlayStation 5 with a detachable disc drive is reportedly in the works by Sony for launch around September next year.

The report, by Insider Gaming, suggests the console will otherwise have near-identical hardware to current PS5 models, with the only difference being the removable drive itself, and an extra USB-C port for it to plug in.

There's also the suggestion this new console will be sold both on its own and with the detachable disc drive included.

Why would Sony do this when it already has two PS5 models on the market, and one already without a disc drive? Depending on how this model is marketed and introduced, it may make a lot of sense.

As production costs for the PS5 are on the rise - and Sony decides to pass on these costs to the consumer - the company is likely looking at ways to streamline its manufacturing process.

Focusing on a single PS5 model going forwards - with the option of an additional drive for those who want it - makes sense and could cut costs of having two more separate production lines.

As the video games industry continues to transition away from physical media, a focus on a discless model as standard would also make sense - with the additional drive an extra you can pay for if you so choose.

Finally, the option would also likely act as a point of differentiation between Sony and Microsoft, which only offers a discless version of its latest consoles in the Xbox Series S, which is underpowered when compared to its Series X bigger brother.

Eurogamer has contacted Sony for comment.

Thoughts, SW? I think it's an interesting idea. Gives more flexibility to customers, am I rite?

Sony is doing a lot these days, not like the ps4 era where they just let the system do it’s thing. I think Sony is confused on what they want to provide at this point.

You mean like updated PS4 hardware innards, as well as a PS4 slim and a PS4 Pro?

This is smart move right here. Many cows were forced to buy the digital version, so now Sony can sell them a disc drive too. Watch this drive cost $129 so Sony can milk them fools even though the drive cost them $15 to produce. Sony genius, cows will fall for it.

I'd really like to see optical media go away in favor of physical distro on a flash drive or cart (and none of that proprietary bullshit, Nintendo).

Optical media is just awful no matter how you look at it.

Don't care for slow last 3 gen optical tech.

Makes sense in term of lowering production costs.

Of course, if they hadn't overclocked the silicon so high their production costs wouldn't be so to begin with.......and they would have higher yields.

AMD is even selling PS5 motherboards that don't meet the high clocks in order to offset the losses.

This may be the dumbest shit yet. Only producing a console without a disk drive and selling the disk drive as a prephrial is a way for them to phase out physical media. If anything should be detachable it's the SSD.

Why would you release a inferior version of your console in 2023?

It really doesn't though. Most are nearly identical and the gap is 15% are less in most cases. No way that's happening if the ps5 is at 9 tflops.

Physical media is already being phased out; digital made up 79% of their software sales in Q1.

Digital sales could easily make up 85-90% by the time this SKU launches a year from now.

Nice for those who purchased the digital version and now feel like they want to get some disc games to play as well. I see they’ll likely just have the same model of PS5 and just sell it either with the detachable drive or without. Personally I prefer the aesthetic of having the drive as part of the actual system myself so I am glad that I already have this version.

I'm all for physical media, seeing how it gives more control to the consumer (many claim to care about that), but are they even putting actual game data on discs anymore, or are they just plastic download codes?

It probably should have been that day 1 (The Disc version of the console is clearly not the original design). If the new model will look the same as the current model then it doesn't make much sense though. Maybe this is for a PS5 slim (i know what the article says but it is just a rumour).

Because a ton of people are still getting screwed by their internet providers' bandwidth limits and overage charges. Because there's no real competition between internet providers in America.

That is an different issue all together.

It's one and the same. If I have to choose between ripping or installing a disc and downloading all that data against my cap, I'll choose the disc.

This may be the dumbest shit yet. Only producing a console without a disk drive and selling the disk drive as a prephrial is a way for them to phase out physical media. If anything should be detachable it's the SSD.

Why would you release a inferior version of your console in 2023?

Physical media is already being phased out; digital made up 79% of their software sales in Q1.

Digital sales could easily make up 85-90% by the time this SKU launches a year from now.

The reason why digital sales are up is because the digital consoles are cheaper to buy than the physical current gen consoles. Buying physical games are cheaper than buying digital games.

Disk drive or bust.

But it isn't. Data caps and internet does not relate to system performance. If you noted the context of my original comment you will see that I am stating the reasoning for my purchase, that being performance.

You asked "Why pay more for the same performance?" as a general question not necessarily specific to yourself.

Nope! Note the context.
