Mandatory update, needed to access PSN in any capacity on the system, including via a PC/PS3 connection. Kills soft mods. I actually find it a bit funny, because this is the first update Sony has released for the system in over three years, and because the PSP was officially discontinued worldwide last year.

Still, I guess it's good to see them still supporting their old product, even if it is with a firmware update? I mean, I can only hope Vita will get this kind of support from Sony during its tenth year on the market.

That is so odd. Why do that to a discontinued device? Besides after 2 weeks there will be another work around and it'll be worthless. You'd figure they would have done something more constructive with their support.

This is the type of support that makes Sony NO.1 in support. You know Ps3/4 and Vita will be supported for years and years.

The PSP has been hacked so badly that a workaround this firmware will be up within a week.

I thought they pulled PSN support from the device a short while back, or was that just access to the PlayStation Store for the device?

If anything wouldn't this stop some of the small amount of revenue they still get from PSP sales which is likely all digital now. Seems so pointless and annoying.

Quite late for a last-generation system.

Nintendo stopped supporting the NES a few years ago. You could still send it in for repairs up until then.
