'A Sony patent for removable PlayStation 5 faceplates has been published.

OPAttack spotted the patent on the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website, dated 16th November.

The patent has sparked speculation Sony may be ready to sell its own PS5 faceplates and skins, or hand out official licenses to third-parties to sell their own.

Sony has butted heads with a number of companies who have sold unofficial PS5 faceplates since the console went on sale last year.

Last year, the company behind PlateStation5.com was forced to change its name and remove PS5 imagery after Sony threatened legal action. Eventually, the firm cancelled all preorders.

In February, Canadian-based device customisation company Dbrand launched its replacement PS5 plates, dubbed Darkplates, with a brazen attitude towards the prospect of a Sony takedown.

Ever since i wrapped mine with some vinyl, i forgot how ugly my ps5 is, which btw is a positive.

Obvious from the start, when they went after people trying to make their own faceplates. Sony want that sweet accessory and special edition console money.

If white is still the only color available when I get a PS5 I'll just paint the faceplates myself.

Anyone can just take it apart and spray pain the plates themselves saving money from buying 3rd-party or even Sony.

I like the new Dbrand plates with the rounded edges and air vent. Going to get one soon

They do look pretty good. I guess they sell lights for them too which would be neat if you're into that.

Interesting to see what type of plates they are and if they are more than colour variations. I'd get a god of war custom plate.

Yeah, I fully expected this myself as well. Would definitely allow for some cool themes and Special Edition type of plates.

I have never cared about the style of a console, and I'm not about to start caring now.

@Chutebox: I don't care about the style so much as the color. I just don't like white consoles (or most electronics for that matter.

Or they just patented it so if anyone else tries to make them they can claim patent violations.
