Sony is cooking up plans to run ads in PlayStation games

What say you fellow System Wars friends? Looks like they are doing testing with adtech partners to place in-game ads.

Would you rather pay a subscription fee (maybe pay more) and not have ads in your PS games? Or just accept the ads as they are?

They've been planning such things for many years, nobody has pulled the trigger on it. At very least just another patent to pocket.

If it's like watching hockey with ads all over the place(ice, etc), I don't mind at all. If it leads to more free to play games, that's fine with me. Imagine paying $60-$70 for the ad-free version lol

Only games I find this somewhat acceptable is maybe F2P and sports games. And only if it's not overdone.

@x_hedon: Yeah for sure. As long as it’s not something that will literally pause the game to run an ad then I’m generally ok with ads in games. Seeing a billboard advertising some product as I drive around a track is fine with me. Free to play games can pretty much do whatever they want though as stuff like that is basically the price of admission for them.

If this becomes the norm, i will buy every game in used condition so forget my dolla dolla billz.🤷‍♂️

@x_hedon: If they do it with free-to-play games, I don't see a problem. But, if they do it with games that they are charging $70 a pop for, then I would be mad.

There's still people buying used games and hardware. That's money lost in their eyes... And when there's money lost somewhere, they are gonna look to make it up somewhere else.

They're already doing this for years. Overpriced peripherals, paid online, insanely overpriced skins, etc. Adding ads is just Bobby Kotick's greed on top of it all.

If it's a coca cola billboard in GT7 I can deal with that, but if it's in something like God of War I will flip my shit.

Even if it's used in a decent manner at first (let's say adds in sports games or racing game) both Ms and Sony will eventually **** us over and put them everywhere in all games, better to try and stop it right now before it starts.

You could even put it in Spiderman 2 and just allow real companies to advertise on time Square billboards. But they have to be careful about it.

Sony has a patent that is over a decade old that stops the player from playing to show an ad. But, I am not surprised you are unaware of this.

@vfighter: you can always go over to nintendo...I doubt they will bring any ads in their games any time soon.

I was about to say the same thing.. their patent was basically the same thing Youtube does now with mid video adverts (but for video games)

This gen has been so lackluster. I’m ready to quit buying new games and just play retro stuff. This advertising BS will make this happen faster.

I think that was the case, but between digital sales and physical sales, I think that's more of an excuse now. Game retailer stores are struggling more than ever. I think the Series S and PS5 digital has furthered the difficulty of game retailers.

I'm not saying I'm right, but I'd be surprised if the second hand market had the same impact to day as it used to.

This is all anecdotal, I'm not passing this as fact, it's supposition. I personally haven't chosen 2nd hand since the 7th gen. I mean, I still buy 2nd hand 5th and 6th gen games these days, but I think that's different.

Keep it on loading screens or in game billboards or buildings. If it forces me to watch videos between rounds, games, or DURING play then I'm done. It could actually be kind of cool to see real life adds within a virtual world if done right, but I have no faith they will even get close to that.
