Sony Ericsson ends the year with losses

Sony Ericsson's financial results for the year ending December 31 make for miserable reading, with 2010's profit of €90 million wiped out and the firm reporting a loss of €247 million (£206 million).

President and CEO Bert Nordberg pinned the decline on 2011 being a transitional year in which the company shifted focus from feature phones to smartphones. Sales of the Xperia range of Android phones were up 65 per cent year on year, with 28 million units shipped to date.

Overall units shipped, however, fell 20 per cent in the final three months of the year to nine million, with sales revenue down 16 per cent to €1.3 billion (£1.08 billion).

That renewed focus on smartphones will continue into 2012, the company said, with future handsets to feature Sony branding after it announced plans to buy Ericsson out of their joint venture in October.

phones look nice, BUT they also have older hardware than newer phones, atleast they use to, so that sets them back a lot

They don't release a lot of phones and the ones they do are outdated before they release. Although now that it's SMC maybe they'll get their act together.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. Sony needs to cut their BS cellphone and laptop divisions ASAP
