Discussing the differences between PS4 and Xbox One with Eurogamer, Stewart Gilray, who is working on a secret PS4 game at Just Add Water, said: "We might see slightly smoother framerates on PS4. We're working with Sony right now, and they're trying to actively push 60 frames per second, 1080p."

The article continues to state how the PS4 may lower game details in order to achieve 60fps, and states that because of this some games may look slightly worse than on XBOX ONE. Which do you guys think they'll go for, lower details at 60fps or higher details at 30fps?

Source: http://www.videogamer.com/news/sony_actively_pushing_for_60fps_1080p_with_ps4.html

The difference between 30fps and 60fps is like night and day. But I personally think that sarcrifices will still be made with next gen consoles.

Thief 30FPS cap: http://www.videogamer.com/ps4/thief/news/ps4_thief_capped_at_30fps_producer_suggests_60fps_not_a_necessity.html

Killzone SF 30FPS cap (apparently): http://www.vg247.com/2013/02/25/killzone-shadow-fall-demo-runs-at-30fps-digital-foundry-tests-suggest/

I think that as the console develops itself more exclusives will be 60fps. Multiplats though I feel will be capped at 30fps. I suspect the same for the Xbox One.

If i were them i'd settle for 45fps and up graphics a little. 45fps is plenty with slow sensitivity controllers have.

ill go for lower detail at 60 fps. the consoles can both produce decent graphics i dont care for an extra piece of grass or a tree in a level. but 60fps is better than 30fps, u might not be able to see it but when playing the game u will feel it.

Is it only 60 vs 30? I mean there's no possibility for something in between without sacrificing game details?
Btw can someone show examples of  differences between FPS of all ranges from 30 to 60?

I don't need 60 FPS in all my games. Something like a Final Fantasy would be fine at 30 FPS while something like CoD I would much prefer 60 FPS. Sly Cooper would be fine at 30. Gran Turismo would not.

That would be great, but really only FPS, Hack and Slash, Racing, and Fighters benefit greatly with 60fps when using a controller.

It really does depend on the game but it's nice to see Sony trying to get 60fps on games, it does benefit genres like FPS, TPS Racing, Fighters and Hack & Slash.

I'd like to live in a day where framerate is a forgotten word just like "pop in" was forgotten after the Saturn/PS1 days. 1080P at 60fps, I welcome it. Anyhow, 60FPS would be nice but if they don't need to make huge sacrifices in order to have higher visual fidelity and a less but still strong framerate I'd be fine with that; balance is the key, guess it just depends on the type of game.

Most TVs are 60hz. Anything other than 30,60 or 120 is going to involve dropping or duplicating some frames but not others leading to annoying stutter. 30 fps works as every frame can be duplicated so movement still appears smooth on a 60hz display. With 45fps some frames will be duplicated and some won't leading to uneven playback. A solid 30fps generally looks a lot better than 45fps on a 60hz TV. Obviously 60 fps looks better but 30 fps is actually fine for most games as long as it's stable, it's when the frame rate drops below 30 that it becomes distracting.

True but at least we wont have to worry about the games dipping to the lower 20s like in a lot of current gen games.

45 is a waste. Yeah its more responsive but the blurriness when moving and looking around is still there. The clearness kicks in when you hit the low 50's.

With ultra-fast customized processors and 8GB of high-performance unified system memory, PS4 is the home to games with rich, high-fidelity graphics and deeply immersive experiences that shatter expectations. By gamers, for gamers, the Live, learn and love way of Sony.

I think 60fps would be great for gameplay, but I still think that in most cases games will go for 30 instead.

60fps/1080p should be the standard with next-gen consoles but i highly doubt it will :(

devs will always push for better visuals which comes at a cost of having lower fps..

I would rather have larger battle areas, more detail, more enemies on screen, better AI, ect then 60 fps. Certain games 60 fps would be better but most I would just be happy to not have such corridor shooters anymore with 3 or 4 enemies at a time.

Wow did you not read the article at all?!? It doesn't say anything about PS4 lowering quality it says the Xbox can't do what the Ps4 can ill copy and paste... "You might get situations where the graphics will be a little, but not much, lower quality on the Xbox One," he continued. "Or, you might get some fixed at 30 frames per second situations in 1080p. It depends on the scale of the game. "If your game is going to push the heck out of the PS4, you might have to do some little tweaks [for the Xbox One version]. But if you design your game to work on Xbox One at 60, it's going to work on PS4 at 60." Read the article first before you post... It clearly states the Xbox one will be the system that will not be able to run 1080p with 60fps if Ps4 can't... It clearly states PS4 is superior in you're article. http://www.videogamer.com/news/sony_actively_pushing_for_60fps_1080p_with_ps4.html

Good. Performance over visuals, any time!

I'm believe PS4 will handle both, graphics and performance, though.

This is one of my biggest problems with current consoles. 30fps I can live with, just, although 40-60 is so much better. The screen resolution drives me insane. I'm so used to 1080p on pc that whenever I go to console from pc it looks truly terrible. Saying that, I also have big issues with texture quality lol. I'm pretty sure if most current console games did actually run at 1080p we would really see just how bad those textures look!! Like running an old game on PC at 1080p, sure it looks crystal clear but the textures look worse as you see all the (lack of) detail. Not sure what I'd prefer to be honest.

Generally speaking it's always better to lower visual quality to a point where you have a stable, playable FPS. When you want higher quality, you upgrade.

Ginosaji

Most console games have a stable fps at 30. 30fps is also very playable. Hence, it's highly subjective. You do not need 60fps for a game to be playable.

And what upgrade?. Try to get into the context of the discussion. We're not talking about a PC here. And personally, if Sony really wanted to push for framerate smoothness, you don't even need a perfect 60fps. 45 to 50fps can easily give people the illusion of smoothness, and easily mistaken for 60. At the end of the day, 'perception' is the important thing, not the actual figure.

So let me just get this right, I'm a little behind on these things. We are seeing all this hype about the "power" of PS4, which actually had me excited and now already we are talking about games running at 30fps?? And judging by this thread it isn't even taken as a given that it will run games at 1080p!' I mean come on.

How are games gonna look worse on PS4, when its stronger than Xbone. Doesn't make any sense bro. The 60fps isnt gonna make the stronger console have worse looking games. If both consoles were the same in power then yea, but they aint.

Some games will be 30, some 60. Like its always been. We had COD, Rage, fighting games, wipeout, and other games at 60fps on PS3. We will have more on PS4.

Read the article first.... The TC clearly didn't read the original article bc it clearly states the Xbox one will have trouble running games at 60 fps unless it sacrificed quality in graphics maybe some of you should read...

PS4 games wouldn't look good then. It uses much more system resource to run at 60fps, 1080p with great graphics. I don't think the PS4 would handle this, so developers will have to free up the resource by reducing the quality of graphics in order to achieve the 60fps target.

I can't believe people are already talking about limitations, on consoles that are supposed to be 12+ times more capable than current ones!

We have some good looking games running at 60fps on 8 year old hardware (Rage, Forza 4, GT5, etc...). I don't think it will be a problem on PS4 and X1.
