Way past cool! June 23, 2022 for the impatient. Keep in mind this isn't Sonic Mania-like experience nor a sequel if that make sense. Looking forward to this and Sega is trying hard to ride that Sonic 2 movie hype train from the looks of it.

Edit: $39.99 for standard & $44.99 digital deluxe. I’m buying digital deluxe Day 1! I have no shamed and I love Sonic games to death lol.

Not really at the slightest. Sonic Origins is gonna have widescreen support which is good and the animations tie into the game is also a bonus. In short this isn't a remake, this is a remastered...or so Sega says.

Might've liked it if i tried it in the 90's, but looking at it now, i just don't get it. Looks boring. Would play Ori over this any day of the year.

I was hoping for a sequel to Sonic Mania... am disappointed.

and Wow 40 bucks? That's a rip off.

You can get the one of the 3 million Genesis collections out there that has like 40 games on it.

this is pretty disappointing, TBH, especially at that price point. I'm a big 2D sonic fan, but you can get these games FROM SEGA for a fraction of this price and they are perfectly enjoyable on modern hardware (e.g., genesis collection, etc). New game, please

@br0kenrabbit: The only Christian Whitehead game on steam is Sonic CD, because 1 and 2 were stuck on mobile. These 4 are using his latest build of the retro engine with Simon Thomley doing most of the work on the 3 & Knuckles remaster since the original was never finished (He also worked on all those games and Mania).

Long story short, Origins will have the best official versions of Sonic 1-3 & Knuckles and CD.

Why don't they always design Sonic more like a kid-friendly toon? The tall, long-haired version really looks awful. Imagine trying to make Mickey Mouse look cool.

I've got Sonic 2, 3, Knuckles and Sonic CD on Steam.

@Renegade_Fury: Thanks for the info.

Do you have a source? It seems obvious to me that you would be correct but I was nonetheless worried they were going to emulate like Nintendo would.

Not interested. We have enough classic Sonic games being re-released as it is. I just want a sequel to Sonic Mania instead.

@br0kenrabbit: I do too, but only CD was made by Christian Whitehead and his retro engine. The others are old SEGA 4:3 emulations from D3T Limited or some other third party.

@organic_machine: Sure:

Headcannon is Simon Thomley's company.

I mean, they always said they were remasters. Well, "enhanced remasters" for better correctness. But it is cool that they are adding animated cutscenes that are in the same style as Sonic CD opening.

Sega said they'll release physical at a later date as this is digital only for now.

@Renegade_Fury: Cool. So it's an actual rebuild of the games, and not just emulated ROMs. That would make sense, since they were able to get the 16:9 aspect ratio. You'd have to re-program the game to change the aspect ratio, and I don't think Sega still has the original source code (like most devs from that era).

Myez, sell your old Sonic games again. There are many suckers out there. In a couple months they can make another collection with the games they neatly left out this collection and get those suckers again.

After that they can just wait a couple years and do the same thing again. Easy moolah from people who don't know how to emulate.

@zerothehero: Sonic Mania wasn't always $20, I think it also launched at a $40 price (or maybe $35).

I'm not into these types of remasters. They're charging way too much and there's basically no visual upgrade aside from the widescreen addition. The new animation sections look nice, but it absolutely does not justify such a high price. I already have these games on the Gamecube via Sonic Mega Collection and Gems Collection, so that makes it even harder.

If it was more like this, I'd be on board.

My thoughts: it's nice to see Sonic 3 and Knuckles finally have a new version or rerelease. I guess the legal stuff surrounding that game has been settled?

Yeah, that pre-order spread looks jank.

At least it's almost guaranteed that this will be handled with care. Not a big fan of these games by any stretch, but will probably eventually grab just to have what will likely be the best versions.

Any word on a Time Attack mode for all games/stages @Renegade_Fury? Grinding away at individual zones for better routes/times is where I find the most enjoyment in these games, would seal the deal for me. Pretty sure CD and S&K already had it built in (with caveats), but really enjoyed how Mania handled it.

@ConanTheStoner: It should be built in since it was in the mobile ports. On the main menu before selecting the games, I know there's at least boss rush, challenge, and special zone modes. I think there's a mirror mode too, but I don't know if it's a part of the challenges or something else.

Lol, just remembered, I have a Sonic collection on the Nintendo DS. Sonic Mega Collection on the GC, Sonic Gems collection, probably some other one... None of this is new. Sega have probably re-released these Sonic games almost as much as Capcom have re-released Street Fighter 2.

Uuh, you can play the original games in widescreen too. My last Sonic 2 playthrough was in true 16:9.

Welp, leave it to Sega to make a bad situation even worse...

"The press release says Sega plans to remove the digital versions of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD from digital storefronts on May 20."

PSA you can get these games for $5 apiece until May 20.
