Sonic Mania (PS4,X1) and Project Sonic 2017 (PS4,X1,PC,NX) Announced.

So Sega had there Sonic 25th Anniversary live stream a few hours ago, and while most of the event was kinda boring, (at least if you're at home watching anyway), a few cool things where announced.

First up is Sonic Mania, a 2D Sonic inspired by the original games and developed by the same team that ported Sonic 1, 2 and CD to Mobile. The game is coming to X1 and PS4 early next year.

The Second, was the announcement of Project Sonic 2017. The next 3D Sonic from Sonic Team, and inspired by Colors and Generations. The game is coming to PS4, X1, PC and NX holiday 2017.

I am so excited for Mania. It's exactly what I've been wanting for years: a true 2D Genesis/CD Sonic game with Christian Whitehead behind the wheel, and now we're finally... finally getting it. *cries*

The second game, I mean, there's nothing to go off other than classic Sonic being there, but if it's anything like Generations, I can't wait to play it too.

2017 is looking like a great year for Sonic.

Mania looks awesome as hell, definitely keeping my eye on it.

Project Sonic- it's 3D Sonic so it could go either way, but it looks a lot like Generations, and Generations was great, so I am actually legitimately excited for that, too.

Gameplay and Music for Mania

There is no doubt in my mind that this game is going to deliver. Gorgeous spritework, amazing music, references to obscure Sonic games and other SEGA series like Streets of Rage, elemental shields, special zone giant rings, Tails & Knuckles being playable - Mania has it all.

I absolutely love the idea of Mania. It looks great. But the one thing that I've noticed over the recent years is the platforming on Sonic 2D hasn't nearly been as tight as it was. Hopefully this will be remedied. The original sonic games were 2D platform perfection but the 2D stages in generations simply weren't and neither was "sonic 4". I want sonic to control as he used to and the traps and pitfalls to be similar too. Not just sonic 3D on a single plane.

But yeah, hyped. Sonic 3D is hugely hit and miss and not nearly as playable as 2D so Project Sonic is an eh from me. Sonic Lost Worlds was in many ways a step in the right direction actually.

@DocSanchez: Don't worry, the controls and physics will be perfect. Christian Whitehead nailed them completely with his retro engine, which he used for the Sonic CD remake. This is NOT going to be floaty or lack momentum.

@Renegade_Fury: Yeah I did appreciate his work on the conversions he did plus he added value like knuckles in sonic 1. Hopefully this will either be a big 2D adventure or the first of a series of similar ones.

Sonic actually got confirmed for the NX before Mario did. Sega does what Nintendon't indeed.

@DocSanchez: Yeah, I've been hoping for his remakes of Sonic 1 & 2 to be ported to other systems, because they're equally impressive. I'm thinking with Mania we're going to see the start of a new series that will release alongside the 3D games that Sonic Team works on. So we'll probably get a Mania 2 and 3 down the line.

Generations wasnt "complete" without the Chaos. I hope this one has it.

@93BlackHawk93: I didn't care for the classic ones lol, but I went back to them way after the fact. I did like Adventure and Adventure 2, as well as Sonic Advance and Generations and Colors were great.

Maybe the company has understood what fans demand Mania looks really promising hopefully there are special zones haven't seen in game footage of the other game so waiting for my judgement.

Well, it's the Wii U. I kind of expected this after SEGA's recent statement on Sonic selling on the Wii U.

Though for me, Mania is kind of... meh to me.

Mania looks like a safe and fun pick up. Project Sonic is a wait and see type of title at this point with 0 game play. I also hope Nintendo just keeps the NX name at this point. Most people know it by that name anyway.

Looks promising. If Sony Mania or Project Sonic are anywhere near as good as Sonic 2-3 or Sonic Colors/Generations, then that's all the Sonic I need. Let's hope that Sonic Team learnt their lesson and build on what actually works, instead of pointless gimmicks that detract from the experience.

Ubisoft knew the Wii as the Revolution and announced Red Steel around that time. Didn't stop Nintendo from changing it to the Wii.

I think this might be a by more confirmation that NIntendo might actually go ahead and use the NX name though.

Just the fact you can play as Sonic,Tails or Knuckles is promising no Amy or Shadow the 3 classic characters from Sonic 3 and Knuckles.

Sonic Mania looks like the true sequel to Sonic 3 and Knuckles so I am hyped for it.

The new 3D Sonic could be good. I did like Colors and Generations.

Great news about Mania! Been far too long since we've had a proper 2D entry and it looks like they're going back to the basics. The soundtrack reminds me a lot of Sonic CD too; here's hoping they're not using the level design of that game as inspiration too.

Sonic Mania looks great. Let's hope they know how to convey proper movement, unlike that doggy shite that was Sonic 4.

Never was that into the original Sonic trilogy, but maybe Sonic Mania will change my mind (not having to make me play some BS minigames to get Chaos Emeralds would be a nice start...)

Sonic Mania actually got me excited for it. Looks way better then Sonic The Hedgehog 4 episode1 and 2 ever did. Plus they brought back Sonic's original look then his current one. I always preferred his original design.

Sonic Mania looks way too much like the originals. It's good that it will play like the originals, but it needs a new aesthetic. It looks even safer and staler than the New Super Mario Bros games and that's saying something.

Nice to see so much positivity in here. Most of the Sonic threads I see are all full of people bashing the series. Even the classic Sonic games get crapped on sometimes.

Yeah, I'm enjoying it too, and seeing all the positive reactions brings a smile to my face.

I love how the crowd got loud when Christian Whitehead's name appeared, and then blew up when it was revealed that Knuckles was playable.

Sonic is trash.

This is literally the first thing to reference the NX so I'm glad we're starting off at rock bottom.
