Cancelled plans for Sleeping Dogs 2 were ridiculously ambitious

Cloud saves of all players would determine crime levels.

We'll likely never see a Sleeping Dogs 2 now developer United Front Games has been shut down - but plans were once very much afoot for the open world crime drama to get a sequel.

We've heard of UFG's plans before, but Waypoint's new deep dive into the sequel's design document is by far the most detailed account yet of what Sleeping Dogs 2 might have been.

And wow, it was ambitious.

First off, you'd have a big new open world and the return of Sleeping Dogs' main character Wei Shen, now based in China's Pearl River Megacity.

Wei Shen would also have a corrupt partner, Henry Fang, and action would play out from both points of view to tell stories which would only fully reveal themselves when you had played both sections.

Sleeping Dogs 2 would have also featured co-op play and a companion app where you could influence the main game's overworld by bringing in things like helicopters - which sounds like the original Watch Dogs.

Most ambitious of all? UFG wanted to use "the cloud saves of all players to determine the global neighborhood crime levels across all games, and then mapping that crime to the difficulty level in policing those neighborhoods in the individual's games".

I have no idea how this would work.

It's worth remembering that these ideas are from the game's pre-production design document and may well have been scaled back had the game been officially greenlit.

Sadly, Sleeping Dogs 2 never entered full production.

The first Sleeping Dogs was so boring, I couldn't even finish the game and never will. Can't say I'm sorry to hear Sleeping Dogs 2 will never get release.

Sleeping Dogs was an awesome game. I could only hope that they would only improve upon the original if they made a sequel.

Wasn't really any worse than other open-world games. At least the story was somewhat compelling and the setting was fresher.

Its not like first sleeping dogs was good game after all. its story suck, its combat was basically batman, shooting suck, etc

with the exception of Mafia 1. I never liked any GTA or its clone.

It's disappointing to see such negative feedback towards such a wonderful game.

Hopefully in the future with retrospect a more charitable viewpoint will be adopted.

Sleeping dogs is heavily underrated. It was a hidden gem. Shame to see that it will be the last.

Loved the first one and it is a shame there will never be a second.

I enjoyed the first one, it was fun. What could have been with a sequel...

That sucks but I'm just glad GwG offered the Definitive Edition for the first one. This was a better first "Dog" game. The combat and gameplay just felt different from other open world games, which was a good thing. Oh well. Maybe someone else could pick up the series later on, so who knows.

Reading about Sleeping Dogs 2 always makes me sad, because I loved the first game.

I feel like no one asked for watchdogs 2 and we got one anyway...

That sucks for sure, the first one was one of the few open world GTA-type games I've actually finished.
The shooting sucked but I thought pretty much everything else was good.

I just couldn't get into it as I hope it would. I may somehow someday go back to Sleeping Dogs and finish the game for good.

@davillain: @Juub1990: Sleeping dogs was amazing... The combat alone put it ahead of many open world games.

Enjoyed the first one enough to max it out.

It was the best console port ever, with seamless input device changing.

Loved the first game...but never thought it needed a sequel. :P

Couldn't finish the game just wasn't interested in it our the main character's actions.

I can completely understand that. I however, that grew up with bruce lee, chuck norris and van damme, loved this game.
