Skyward Sword ... is not bad

I've played a few hours of the Switch remaster and I'm really intrigued so far. It has an interesting back drop, cool characters, gameplay elements reminiscent of Breath of the Wild (i.e. fun combat, wall climbing, weapon damage).. so when is it going to start to suck? I heard this game is supposed to be one of the lower tier Zelda games. Anyone else in the same boat as me? Playing this game for the first time on Switch? What are your impressions/reactions?

Not played it yet... Just finished Rift Apart today, and booted up some Returnal.

Yeah. Mentioned it in one of your previous threads. Game isn't great by any means, but for all the shit it gets, still a better game that a lot of what gets hype around here. Like you've definitely played and enjoyed worse games lol.

I heard this game is supposed to be one of the lower tier Zelda games.

Can feel that way and still think it's not awful lol.

Skyward Sword for what it is, is a good game

I know one thing, I'm enjoying it more than BOTW. It has it's problems, but overall I'm really liking it.

Low tier Zelda is still better than most....

From what I remember this game had a rough start but progressively got better. Has a strong final act and ended up being a fun ride overall.

It's funny, the hate on it gets overblown because it is merely a 7 or 8/10, which is terrible for a Zelda game since anything under 9 is considered unacceptable for the beloved series.

I notice this always happens when Nintendo tries to incorporate some new gimmick into the existing Zelda formula. Just look at Four Swords and the DS entries. Good, solid games, but nobody asked for multiplayer/touch/move controls, as it only takes away from the experience.

Meh, people have been overrated Zelda games for literally decades. Nice to hear one finally assessed as "not bad," which is probably about where it actually lands.

It looks pretty cool - are you using the motion controls? I read it's actually better that way because it was built around it

It is actually a good game, just not quite as good as your average Zelda. But we live in a time where everything is either solid gold, or rotten horse shit.

It starts and ends well, but has a lot of filler in the middle. You will revisit locations, and even dungeons multiple times, re-fight a few bosses, and have to collect a few two many glowing orbs of whatever. But dungeon design is top notch, bosses are interesting and varied, and it has more charm than TP or BotW.

All that said, my biggest criticism of the game is that it felt too much like OoT. Back when it came out, the series was in need of more of a shakeup than this game provided. I suppose now the BotW has happened, playing this might feel more like a welcome throwback than a tired retread.

Game is trash.

People just love to hate on it. It scored high on critic and user reviews. To me it’s the best 3D Zelda not counting BotW and way better than the overrated Wind Waker. The game just didn’t sell well and many didn’t play it. People were scared, they hate what they fear.

It's not the worst Zelda, but it's the worst modern one. I do think it's better than MM(don't hurt me).

Yeah, but wasn't Four Swords intended as a spinoff anyway? It's more Gauntlet with a better emphasis on team work and not just arcade loot 'em up action.

A bad Zelda game is typically better than a good Microsoft game.

It is not bad ... is just very infuriating.

Most of the problems I had with it were fixed on Switch. It's probably still the worst 3D Zelda, though. But as others said, that's still better than most games.

Never been into MM either. It's weird and stressful. I know it's a good game, but I just don't feel like playing it.

@Litchie: Yeah MM and Wind Waker are the worst 3D Zeldas. Such a chore to play through.

I never found WW a chore to play. Maybe that last fetchquest with the triforce shards wasn't the best, but I remember SS being way more annoying to play.

People hate Phantom Hourglass and Spirit tracks for some reason, and I really like those.

The sailing is a bit slow, and it could be considered a pretty empty overworld. But I wouldn't call it a chore either way.

@Litchie: Yeah I really loved the control style, controlling the boomerang with the stylus for example.

This is also the first Zelda I've played where you can sit on a toilet, foreshadowing the rise of the Switch.

well, I heard the switch controls aren't suited to the sky ward sword which makes heavy use of legacy wii motion controls. I've been pretty interested in playing it..not really a fan of RPG zelda (ie BOTW), and this skyward sword is more my thing.

Good to hear that it's fun. I've been skeptical of this game since it's launch on wii.
