Black Mesa completely ruins what made the original Half-Life great. This remake is literally graphics over gameplay. And the graphics nowadays aren't that great either.

If you haven't played Half-Life yet, just play the original, not this garbo version.

But new Xen is still horrible...

And again, you're highlighting graphics. The original HL had excellent pacing and enemy design and placement. Something the remake botches completely.

Not going to take it to this level, but I def agree it is flawed, and I think he kinda overlooked much of it in favor of lauding it.

And I mean yea, as a fan effort, def laud it. Much of this was worked on for free expecting nothing with legit years of dedication.

But we shouldn't pretend it's perfect.

I also think his point about no realistic shooters is straight up false (or maybe just reading it wrong), while in the traditional sense we had Quake and what not, games like Rainbow 6 and Delta Force among others existed.

The point about how it brings different play-styles together cohesively without feeling artificial and immersive without huge Ubisoft signs, yea, eloquently put.

I agree with your post on the whole, but I often resent hearing this argument.

They're not "dedicated fans working for free" anymore. Maybe in 2009, but not anymore. They're now a company called "The Crowbar Collective" and they're charging money for it. Their work, despite its origins, is going to be compared against other games that similarly charge me money.

I remember quicksaving every time I kill an enemy or make a jump, then quickloading when I get hit once. Over and over throughout the whole game. It wasn't fun.

Yes, an overhaul of gameplay mechanics. Get rid of the AI that flanks you and uses grenades to flush you out instead of following the player through doorways and replace them with hitscanning enemies that can hone in on you from miles away with pinpoint accuracy.

Yep. What an overhaul. What grand pacing! Truly the fans can do what Valve cannot!

Having said that, as much as this is lauded, it isn't perfect either.

While Black Mesa has it's own set of problems (namely marine and basic combat feeling like a tank compared to the OG), Remake still keeps in mediocre boss fights than improving them to actually be good.

And it would be stupid not to take into account this is from a major company, while Black Mesa is fan love, which probably does make Black Mesa more impressive as a feat.

Meh. I’m not really all that big of a fan of Half-Life myself. Resident Evil 1 and 2 Remakes and Final Fantasy VII Remake are more my jam.

amazing.

Why would you need any of that in a linear game.

You either go forward, or backward. How can you get lost?

IGN legitimately complained about that in it's review.

Still trying to figure it out to this day.

I like it but it def has problems. The marines are just aimbots. There's nothing fun about fighting them, especially when the SMG is now worthless.
