Poll Show of hands: were you a fan of Sega consoles? (74 votes)

Yes, I was a Sega fanboy until they stopped making consoles 24%
Yes, I was a Sega fanboy, though they lost me after the Genesis 9%
I was a Sega fan, but I did appreciate the other consoles too 42%
I was not a Sega fan or fanboy 24%

I am just curious- Sega left the console gaming market more than a decade ago, and is all but forgotten today as far as its consoles go. There is also a lot of retconning of history, and a lot of what they did is accomplished is overlooked, forgotten, or downplayed. I was just wondering if, back in the day when they did use to make consoles and handhelds, you were a Sega fan (or if you preferred to stick with Nintendo/PlayStation).

Yes the Dreamcast imo is still the greatest console ever created.

Yes. I was the first one of the few kids in my neighborhood to go with the Sega Master System. NES was the popular choice. I always kinda gravitated to the underdog/minority.

Genesis was a techie's dream.

Sega channel I'll never forget you!

I still like playing other consoles. But Genesis will always have a warm spot in my heart.

Only ever owned a Genesis when it was current, but I grabbed a Dreamcast a couple years back just to add to my collection. Sega made great machines.

@charizard1605:

Thanks, and yeah, the power base converter is pretty cool. It's definitely one of the best Genesis accessories you can get, and it doesn't even require its own AC adapter. CGR has a funny review of it:

Oh, and I guess I never answered the hardware question. I got my Genesis, Game Gear, Saturn, and Dreamcast when they were new, but I didn't get my SEGA CD and 32X until I got into retro gaming a couple of years ago. I wanted the SEGA CD a lot back then, but after Sonic CD came out for the PC, I stopped caring. The 32X, I was always suspicious of from the start, so I didn't want it at the time. After owning them now, I think they both have some pretty good games, especially the SEGA CD, which I leave connected to my Genesis.

Sega had the best designers. The consoles always had a pleasing aesthetic.

I was big on Sega during the Genesis and Game Gear days. Saturn didn't impress me as much as PS1 so I switched camps. Then I went back to Sega at the launch of Dreamcast.

I still have the three mentioned above plus the Sega CD. I want to get my Game Gear refurbished with a new screen and speaker. Oddly the audio went out on it (both speaker and headphone jack) while it was in storage. Other than that though, it still works.

I miss what Sega was as they are a mere shadow of what they once were these days.

Hellz no... My love for the system wars started with the Genesis invasion. I always bought the Nintendo console in every generation a Sega console was released. Oh and Sonic sucks and always has.

I owned the Genesis back in the days when everyone around me had the SNES. Probably my most memorable console that I have ever owned, had alot of great gaming memories with it.

I've only seen the Master System once.

Genesis is one of my favorite systems of all time. The Saturn I think is the most underrated system. And while I didn't love the DC as I did the Genesis and Saturn, the console did have a brief period of excellence.

as for there arcade games, they were excellent.

I didn't care for the Gamegear and the Nomad.

Anyways my favorite games off the top of my head:

  • Sonic 2
  • Sonic 3 and Knuckles (Top 5)
  • Sonic CD
  • NiGHTs: Into Dreams
  • Shining Force
  • Shining Force 2
  • NBA 2K1
  • Shinobi 3
  • Comix Zone
  • Daytona USA
  • Sega Rally Championship
  • Virtua Fighter 2
  • Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution
  • Virtua Cop
  • House of the Dead
  • Super HangOn
  • NFL 2K5

The Genesis Sega is THE first console i ever owned ( won ) and it was the worst console in the history of consoles as i played that shit all day long to the point where it broke the next day.. it literally stopped working the next day ( i still think that i won a defective console and it didnt just break because i played it for hours none without letting it rest )

thats why i dont even count the genesis sega as my real first console since it only lasted a day so i just count the PS1 as my first console as that was when i fell in love with PS and the console world

My first console was a Mastersystem so I'd probably consider myself a SEGA fan first. I owned a, Game Gear, Mega Drive (with the Master system converter) and Dreamcast after that.

I also has a NES, SNES, Game Boy, Atari Jaguar, Amiga CD32, Playstation, N64, PS2, Xbox, Game Cube, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and PS4 so I'm not really tied down to any particular brand.

Oddly enough the only Sega system I've ever owned was the Gamegear. I think we only ended up getting like 2 games on it though.

Other than that, I never really got into Sega. Mostly grew up with Nintendo, Having both access to the NES and SNES as a young child. I continued to get Nintendo systems and even ended up getting Sony systems, while my family never ended up getting a Sega system.

I do regret missing out on the Genesis, as it really did seem to be close to the SNES, which is really saying something; atleast going by what alot of people say about the genesis.

Yeah, huge SEGA: King of the Arcade, fan back in the day and owned all their consoles and see Xbox as the successor since SEGA brought a bunch of games to the Xbox. I thought MS was going to make them 1st party back in the early 2000's - Saddens me they're out of the game so to speak.

Nintendo's for teh little tikes you silly kids. Of course I kid. :P

I was never a fan and never owned a Sega console. Not that I hated them or anything, I just liked Nintendo better and then Sony came a long with the Playstation.

I always liked Sega a lot. During the 16-bit era, I even preferred them to Nintendo. I stopped buying their consoles after I got the 32x and ended up having a library of 3 games, though. I played the Dreamcast after it was discontinued and liked it a lot. I kind of wish I would have purchased one. A Saturn would be nice to have as well.

I owned the Master System, the Genesis, Sega CD and that god-awful 32x (worst thing I ever bought in gaming, the Star Wars game was atrocious, Sega Saturn and Dreamcast. I Loved the Genesis despite it only being able to display around 25 colors and the worst sound card I ever heard, lol. Sewer Shark and Lunar 1 and 2 (fantastic rpgs) made me love the system despite its failings. The Saturn was good, but not great. The Dreamcast was great, but Sega ran outta money IMHO. I've a;lways been a fan of Sega systems and their dev teams. And I still miss Sewer Shark on Sega CD. It was cheesy good times

Never owned a SEGA console, but I did like the Genesis/Mega Drive of what I played out of that. Would like a Dreamcast and/or Saturn one day.

I wasn't a gamer back then, but ever since '07, '08, i've been playing around with older consoles because of their vast libraries of great games. The SNES, for example, has become one of my favorite consoles, if not my favorite one, period, and i never knew it existed in its life-time. Talk about being late to the party.

As for SEGA, i'm a SEGA fan now. I love the Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast. The Saturn in particular is going to receive some special attention in a couple of weeks. I want to finish Panzer Dragoon Zwei and really get into Shining Force III.
