Should the PS5 be cheaper than the Series X because of its weaker APU?

It's suppose to be $100 cheaper than the series X

Should the Switch be cheaper because it has X360 graphics?

That would be a massive blow to Series X if true for the Physical Edition though Series S is probably gonna be the majority unless artificially gimped in production count.

Any sources of this new rumour for the PS5 to be $ 100 cheaper? Not surprised if that's the case with the Digital Edition.

@rzxv04: No actual confirmation , just going by the PS5 price rumors and what the Xbox engineer said at the hot chip event about the prices going up.

Most definitely it should be 100 cheaper. I was informed multiple times that Series X is more expensive.

It should cost whatever people are willing to pay for it. Who cares about a bit lower end hardware, when it has the better/more games?

Its 3tflops less powerful. I expect it to be $100 less expensive for each tflop.

I care less on what it costs, I'm still getting one because no matter what Sony always brings the games. On Series X side of things I'm waiting it out until they have a good enough line up to justify my purchase.

It comes down to a number of things but, mostly:

- SoC price

- RAM price

- SSD price

- Price adjustment based on business needs

- SoC: The XSX will very likely have a larger (and more expensive) SoC considering it's number of CUs vs the PS5.

- RAM: I don't think there's a clear cost winner here but, the XSX's solution may be a bit more expensive.

The PS5 will likely have 8x 2GBs GDDR6 RAM Chips across a 256-bit interface.

The XSX has 6x 2GB GDDR6 + 4x 1GB GDDR6 RAM Chips across a 320-bit interface.

- SSD: The PS5 is likely a bit more expensive.

The PS5 uses a 12x PCIe4 - 825GB SSD. (I honestly don't know how you combine NAND chips to get 825GBs)

The XSX uses a 8x PCIe4 - 1TB SDD.

- Price adjustment based on business needs

*shrug* Both of these devices were likely built around a $400-$500 price range in mind.

If i was sony i think i would definitely want to keep it lower than the XSX. even a more token 50 quid less...but something.

either that or include the main leading first party title (maybe R&C) with every purchase. a console and a game for the price of the competitors console sounds nice from sonys point of view.

momentum is key so as long as i am not taking a big hit on each console sold its not the end of the world.

i dont think the BOM between both systems is going to be that different. the SOC of the XSX will cost more of course but then the PS5 is physically bigger and its controller has a few extra tricks up its sleeve. Ram should be about the same really. the cost of the cooler will probably be the same (is the PS5 using a vapour chamber also or is it just a bigger block of metal?). i doubt the cost of actualy making the PS5 SSD is much higher, if at all, than the XSX or a standard SSD (that would be more an R&D expense).

sony have said it themselves though: its all about the value proposition. value is not a simple calculation of tflops/dollar.

No the xbox series x needs to be cheaper because brand sucks.

Its time time for microsoft to be cheaper and more powerful remember like the ps4 its time for microsoft to do that if they can't im done with the brand. Sony already did it last gen its microsoft turn to be cheaper and way more powerful.

Sony could release a weaker system for $100 more than Series X without exclusives and it would still outsell Microsoft's consoles. The Sony fanbase will make everyone on internet miserable if they don't get their way.

I'll buy a ps5 when the slim comes out and their are some playworthy exclusives. The slim consoles the last two generations have been superior to the originals.

By the logic going around here the Switch should cost about $20. The PS5 has more expensive cooling, SSD, controller, bespoke tempest engine, and likely a more expensive case than XSX. Why would it be cheaper?

I'd expect something along that price range/difference.

I wonder how much R&D and patent/license fee Sony spent for the newer haptics and adaptive triggers. Maybe there's also a new lightbar/detection tech on DualSense.

I also wonder if Sony has put stuff such as built in VR components inside the console itself that might even increase BoM.

Not only because smaller APU, bu also because RAM and SSD. Yes, SSD, because Sony use more channels, but slower ones, But MS is using less channels for their SSD, but faster ones.

You said the PS5 should be cheaper than x-series because of lower specs you said "that makes sense."

The XB1 should have made no sense to you also because it was 100 dollars more and weaker based on what you said.

You basically bought something that made no sense to you and the price for performance doesn't dictate your purchase at all you just like the xbox Brand and are blind to it over price for performance.

I'm guessing the xbox series X cost more to make so yeah, it'll resale for more. My guess is $599. PS5 $399 and $499(digital and disc). 2 months away from launch and I haven't even heard about the S series yet. Starting to wonder if they canceled it. If it's a real thing than probably $299.

It makes sense to expect that a system less powerful would be cheaper. I never said that buying it at a higher price makes no sense. Also the Xbox One was $100 more because it had Kinect bundled with it.

I also clearly said that hardware specs “alone” don’t dictate my purchasing decisions. I also like to use things like what games I expect to play on it and other features and functions.
