Poll Should Sony turn to The Cell for PS5? (44 votes)

Absolutely, The Cell will guarantee a Sony victory against The Scorpio 11%
Yes, The Cell gives Sony it's best chance at competing with future Microsoft consoles 2%
I'm not sure, I hear mixed reviews about The Cell and would be hesitant to try it again 5%
No, The Cell caused Sony to lose last gen, why try again? 55%
Absolutely not, The Cell's power is dangerous and should not be fully harnessed 27%

The Cell was supposed to be a near super-computer type processor for PS3, promising 120FPS in 4D on dual monitors. Unfortunately, The Cell's True Form was never fully harnessed (that or Sony lied), so we never got to see any of these things come to fruition.

Should Sony turn back to The Cell 2 for PS5? Perhaps with some tweaks to the architecture and GPU, it could finally live up to it's full potential.

Your thoughts?

More than once, but I figured this was a good topic to discuss. No need to get upset.

I'm not upset, but your threads are shit. So there's that. At least you concur.

No more weird proprietary instruction sets. Standards are pro-consumer and pro-developer.

This topic is no different from many others here on SW. I don't think the creator should be punished just because he shows some irony.

Anyway, I miss the times when console manufactures were more creative with the hardware. Although I understand why they go with PCs now.

The Cell was designed to be an all in one generalized cpu that handled parallel tasks, gpu and cpu tasks(handle it all). Problem is that the cell design was over complicated, and it lacked the processing power to be "future proof". Sony realized this later, while they already procured the factories to produce the Cell, they were too far into the PS3 development to scratch the Cell so they decided to get a dedicated gpu on the market ie G70(geforce 7) from nvidia. So all that wasted processing power that was meant for graphics on the Cell would have to be figured out later to augment or help out the RSX gpu. Once figured out the PS3 later on with primarily with 1st party devs were able to get PS3 to go beyond the limits of the geforce based gpu.

Not the Cell, but maybe they should go together with other hardware companies in trying to develop something new? It's a bit boring when everyone uses AMD and what's limited on their shelves. But it has to be X86, going away from that now would be stupid.

Only other viable competitor is Intel, really.

Intel Core i7 Skylake X 12 core CPU based PS5 incoming! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

(Only costs $2200 US dollars!)

Joking aside, Kaby Lake-G looks promising for the console/laptop sector. Includes a discrete GPU with HBM2 memory.

I really doubt that Sony will ever go back to the cell processor. I think it is best to continue with what they went with for the PS4 for ease of development and compatibility.

No, I imagine the PS5 will share a lot of similarity with PS4 to promote compatibilty. I'm wondering if both Sony and MS will essentially be upgrading their PS4/XB1 ecosystem to make seamless transitions into new hardware without suffering drops in both consumer and developer support.

Throwing more TFLOPS with gimp memory bandwidth is nearly pointless. AMD gave PS4 Pro 8.4. TFLOPS Fp16 and Sony selected 218 GB/s physical memory bandwidth.

no. it was an evolutionary dead end 10+ years ago and its even more of a dead end now. there is nothing positive to learn from the PS3s design. nothing at all. it was a lesson in how not to design a console and a badly designed device.

Why would Sony do that after all the effort to switch to x86? That would be the equivalent of Nintendo going back to crappy PowerPC CPUs after the success of the Switch.

@harnessthepower:

The superior compute solution is to keep the processing activity on the chip and minimize external data transfers.

Split CELL's SPE and RSX design is inferior when compared to unified stream/shader processors.

For NVIDIA Maxwell/Pascal GPUs, tile render stays on chip more than PS3's split SPE/RSX processing model.

Well, yeah, they are too expensive. But I was just thinking of using other companies that may be thinking of going away from mobile market and into the PC market.

Like Qualcomm for a CPU, and maybe Img tec would like to create a high end GPU? Rambus is creating a new type of memory, maybe throwing that in there. Just thinking out of the box here, I doubt Sony would risk going away from AMD now. But at least both MS and Sony try to customize their chips in some ways to eliminate bottlenecks and so on.

@Martin_G_N: Well, to be honest, I made that price up. Nobody knows what Skylake X will cost yet (not that you even need a top end HEDT processor for a console anyway). You could easily get away with much cheaper Intel CPU. But you are still right, they are more expensive than AMD. Though mostly due to complacency.

However, with AMD Ryzen out, Kaby Lake-G *might* be more competitively priced with AMD's similar APU offerings. Who knows. Problem is nobody yet knows how good (or bad) they are.

Qualcomm would be an interesting pick. But the problem with that is Sony would then probably have to buy and integrate a separate GPU solution if they wanted to seriously compete in the 4K market. With AMD, Nvidia, and maybe even Intel now, that wouldn't be an issue.

Nvidia's Volta architecture is coming out soon and with that means new mobile stuff. With the Switch working out so well for Nvidia, maybe they will decide to go back into the console market a bit more whole-heatedly and make something custom.
